Learning Mathematics As A Language, Kathryn Shafer
Learning Mathematics As A Language, Kathryn Shafer
Masters Theses
This paper explores the relationship between language and mathematics. It is a summary of research done over the last thirty years. Also included are personal observations which are not part of any controlled study. Since language is the vehicle for thought, mathematics educators and curriculum planners will benefit from a linguistic approach to mathematics education. Symbolic mathematics is similar to natural language in both its structure and its communicative nature. If the students are to internalize the notation, they must be the ones to give it meaning. A linguistic approach to mathematics education includes language development, verbalization of concepts, vocabulary …
A Study Of Effective Practice In Primary Science Teachers, Leslie Jane Wilkinson-Brandt
A Study Of Effective Practice In Primary Science Teachers, Leslie Jane Wilkinson-Brandt
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to determine if the science teaching practices identified by Tobin and Fraser (1988) are indeed used more often by science teachers who have been judged more effective by supervisors. Through a review of the articles on the project, Exemplary Practice in Science and Mathematics Education (EPSME) an observation model of effective teaching was created. The observation model listed practices determined to be effective through the qualitative observations of teachers identified as exemplary by their supervisors. This observation model was then tested in a mathematics and science institute for the at-risk student. The research consisted …

Diatoms Of Northeastern Iowa Fens, Stephen P. Main, David E. Busch
Diatoms Of Northeastern Iowa Fens, Stephen P. Main, David E. Busch
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Analysis of water samples from 10 fens in NE Iowa, collected 13-14 November 1987, revealed a gradient from acid, low conductivity water conditions (pH 5.6, alkalinity 30 mg/I HCO, conductivity 65 μmho, total hardness 30 mg/I Ca) to circumneutral, moderately conductive conditions (pH 7 .2, alkalinity 390 mg/I, conductivity 705 μmho, total hardness 380 mg/I Ca). Three sites along this gradient were sampled 15 May 1988 and 3 September 1988 to evaluate seasonal variation in water conditions. Examination of composite diatom samples collected concurrently with the water samples yielded 150 taxa, of which 14 are new Iowa distributional records and …

The Specific Surface Area Values For Iowa Tills, Keith E. Schilling, Brian L. Gedlinske
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Specific surface area is a property used by earth scientists to estimate the proportion of expandable clay minerals in soils. In this study, specific surface area method is shown to compare favorably with standard clay mineralogical techniques in determining gross differences in expandable clay mineral content in tills. The results of over 100 measurements on till samples from Iowa indicate undifferentiated pre-Illinoian tills from southern and southwestern Iowa have the highest specific surface area values of Iowa tills (ranging from nearly 100 to greater than 150 m2/g) and Wisconsinan Dows Formation tills have the lowest average specific surface …

The Effects Of Spacing A Science Unit On Sound On The Conceptual Understanding Of Eighth Grade Students As Evaluated Through Concept Maps, Lyn Le Countryman
The Effects Of Spacing A Science Unit On Sound On The Conceptual Understanding Of Eighth Grade Students As Evaluated Through Concept Maps, Lyn Le Countryman
Faculty Book Gallery
In 1989, the National Science Teachers Association proposed a new "Scope, Sequence, and Coordination (SS & C)" for grade 7-12 science. Instead of studying science in one-year packages of physics, chemistry, biology, and earth/space science, proponents of SS & C proposed that students study each of these disciplines every year. The idea that students can learn and retain new material better if they study it in spaced intervals rather than all at once provided the focus for this study.
There is a base of psychological research demonstrating the positive effects of "spaced" practice on recall and recognition, but few of …
History Of Mammal Study In Iowa, John B. Bowles
History Of Mammal Study In Iowa, John B. Bowles
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The first records of mammals in Iowa were from explorers, survey parties heading westward and early seeders. Generation of checklists of state mammals began in 1840 and culminated with the annotated list by Scott (1937) and biogeographic analysis by Bowles (1975). Recent focus has been on rare species status and mammalian ecology, e.g., Loess Hills, riparian habitat, agricultural practices, and reestablished grasslands.
Natural History In Iowa: The Early Phases, David C. Glenn-Lewin, Thomas R. Rosburg
Natural History In Iowa: The Early Phases, David C. Glenn-Lewin, Thomas R. Rosburg
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Natural history in Iowa prior to the 20th Century can be conveniently arranged into 4 phases: Native American, before the Louisiana Purchase, between the Louisiana Purchase and about 1850, and after 1850. Native American natural history was extensive and had a distinctly spiritual character. Natural history was a component of European exploration up to the time of the Louisiana Purchase, but was not treated as a separate endeavor; the evidence from this period comes from the journals and diaries of early exploreres, fur traders and the like. Between the Louisiana Purchase and about 1850, natural history changed from its status …

Charles Rueben Keyes And The History Of Iowa Archaeology, William Green
Charles Rueben Keyes And The History Of Iowa Archaeology, William Green
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Charles Reuben Keyes (1871-1951) achieved recognition during his lifetime as the "founding father" of Iowa archaeology, and later assessments confirmed and reemphasized Keyes' stature as Iowa's pioneer archaeologist. The collections and documents Keyes compiled, his interpretive publications, and the records of field work he coordinated have proven more valuable to Midwest and Plains archaeology every year. This article emphasizes Keyes' involvement in the development of professionalism in American archaeology and Iowa’s position in the growth of the discipline from 1920 to 1950. Keyes' contacts with the principal archaeologists of his era ensured Iowa’s involvement in the development of survey methods …

A Comparison Of Science And Mathematics Achievement, Attitudes, Curricular Experiences, And Career Interest Resulting From Magnet And Traditional High School Programs, Rozana Abdul Razak
Dissertations
The growth of specialized schools that emphasize science and mathematics has raised questions about their efficacy in improving performance in various parameters in mathematics and science. In this study, four different components were compared. A science and mathematics experiences questionnaire determined the type and extent of student experiences in science and mathematics during high school, and student interest in science and mathematics careers. The American College Testing Program (ACT) (ACT Registration) sub-scores assessed scholastic achievement, while the determination of student attitudes towards science used the Scientific Attitude Inventory (SAI) (Moore & Sutman, 1970).
Subjects in the study consisted of three …

Robotics And Children: Their Relationship To Science Achievement, Problem Solving, Adhd Rating Scale Scores, And Learning Styles, Susan Preston Wagner
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated whether robotics could significantly improve science achievement scores or problem solving scores as compared to battery powered manipulatives or an untreated traditionally taught control. Also examined was whether there were interactions between treatment group membership and ADHD Rating Scale scores, and treatment group membership and the learning styles subscales auditory, visual, tactile, and kinesthetic. Fifteen fourth through sixth grade classes, involving 364 students from three schools participated in this study. A fifth grade science unit on force, motion, and machines was taught for 20-30 minutes daily, followed by a 50-60 minute robotics session. The treatments lasted for …
