Writing In The Mathematics Classroom, Ryan C. Ghere Jan 2000

Writing In The Mathematics Classroom, Ryan C. Ghere

Masters Theses

This paper explores the benefits of using writing as a tool for teaching mathematics. It is a summary of literature intended to help educators implement a writing plan of their own. Part one is a summary of the purpose, benefits, and types of mathematics writing. Writing in mathematics opens the lines of communication in the classroom, helps in assessment, and allows for the use of interdisciplinary units. Writing in mathematics benefits students, teachers, and the classroom learning atmosphere as a whole. Teachers can use informal writing assignments so that students express their opinions, or assign formal writing to provide students …

Understanding Of The Limit Of Functions Among College Students, Logesh K. Sivapakianathan Jan 2000

Understanding Of The Limit Of Functions Among College Students, Logesh K. Sivapakianathan

Student Works (2000-2009)

This study explored concept images and concept definitions of college students on limits of functions. Their views concerning the attainability of the limit and the extent to which they understood the stand taken by the formal view on this matter were also probed on. The sample comprised 10 students who had completed the Calculus and Analytic Geometry 1 course in the School of American University Studies at a private college in the Klang Valley. A questionnaire on beliefs about limits was administered to them and 4 students were then selected for a task-based interview on the attainability of the limit. …

Hubungan Antara Kemahiran Proses Sains Bersepadu Dengan Stail Kognitif Pelajar Pusat Asasi Sains Universiti Malaya, Siti Mariam Mohamad

Student Works (2000-2009)

ln the past quarter century. science process skills have become major emphases of science curriculum development. The development of science process skills in students is considered to be a major goal of education. The integrated science process skills, which comprised skills of formulating hypotheses, operationally defining, controlling variables, designing experiments and interpreting data are required in the process of problem solving in science. These cognitive skills can be mastered if the learning activities are appropriately matched to the level of the cognitive development of the learner. Valid science curriculum and special instructional strategies are needed to enhanced the extent of …

Effectiveness Of Programmed Instructional Material In The Teaching Of Relection To Form Two Pupils In A Rural School, Swit Peng Gan

Student Works (2000-2009)

The primary objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of programmed instructional material as complementary aids in the teaching of a Mathematical topic, specifically Reflection, to Form Two pupils in a rural secondary school. This is an experimental study. The design of the study is the pre-test-post-test type. An experimental group and a control group were involved in this study. The experimental group used the programmed text, Learn It Yourself Reflection (LIY Reflection) which comprises 4 Units while the control group followed the normal classroom instruction. The students have similar pre-requisite as there is no significant difference in …

Understanding Of Algebraic Notation And Its Relationship With Cognitive Development Among Form Four Students, Saw Hoon Ong Jan 2000

Understanding Of Algebraic Notation And Its Relationship With Cognitive Development Among Form Four Students, Saw Hoon Ong

Student Works (2000-2009)

This study attempts to identify the interpretation of letters used in algebraic expressions and equations by a sample of 139 Form Four students in an urban secondary school. It also determines the distribution of their levels of understanding of algebraic notation and their cognitive levels. It further investigates the relationship between the levels of understanding of algebraic notation and cognitive levels. To achieve these aims, two sets of instruments were used: the Algebra Test and the Longeot Reasoning Test. The findings of the study show that more than 80% of the students could successfu lly use the lower level of …

The Effects Of Computer Animations On Secondary Students’ Understanding Of The Crushing Can Chemical Demonstration, Resa Marie Kelly Jan 2000

The Effects Of Computer Animations On Secondary Students’ Understanding Of The Crushing Can Chemical Demonstration, Resa Marie Kelly

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Understanding chemistry requires the ability to think at three different levels: submicrochemistry, macrochemistry, and representational chemistry. Students often have difficulty making connections among these three areas due to the abstract nature of many chemistry concepts. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how computer animations affected secondary students' understanding of the Crushing Can Demonstration. This investigation compared two groups of chemistry students at a large, suburban high school. The treatment group viewed the animation after seeing and discussing the crushing can demonstration, while the control group received the same instruction as the treatment group but did not see the …

Students’ Conceptions Of Mathematics And The Transition From A Standards-Based Reform Curriculum To College Mathematics, Rebecca K. Walker Dec 1999

Students’ Conceptions Of Mathematics And The Transition From A Standards-Based Reform Curriculum To College Mathematics, Rebecca K. Walker

Dissertations

Students’ conceptions of mathematics are shaped by the environment within which they learn mathematics and in turn they affect the manner in which students engage in mathematics.

This study examined students’ conceptions about learning, knowing, and doing mathematics after studying four years of a Standards-based reform high school mathematics curriculum developed by the Core-Plus Mathematics Project (CPMP). Student conceptions were examined at the end of high school (n = 2S6) and after one semester of college mathematics (n = 92). The study also provides case studies of six students as they navigated from the CPMP curriculum through college Precalculus or …

Students' Mental Models Of Electricity In Simple Dc Circuits, Andrew C. Isola Iii Dec 1999

Students' Mental Models Of Electricity In Simple Dc Circuits, Andrew C. Isola Iii

Dissertations

This study presents the results of research into middle school students' knowledge about the nature and mechanisms of action of electricity in simple DC circuits. Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders (n=99) were asked a series of questions about the roles of bulbs, batteries, wires, and electricity in circuits. Almost half the number of students (n=42) were found to have used detailed, well-defined, and logically consistent mental models based on their responses. A total of 15 different detailed mental models were documented in these students that belonged to one of four different general model types: (1) round trip flow using both …

Is Mathematics Education Taking A Step Backward?, Frances Kuwahara Lang Jul 1999

Is Mathematics Education Taking A Step Backward?, Frances Kuwahara Lang

Humanistic Mathematics Network Journal

This article addresses the current political, socioeconomic, and educational state of mathematics education in California. The “back-to-basics” movement in mathematics mirrors the “back-to-phonics” movement in language arts. At a time when ethnic minorities have become the majority, the dominant culture has chosen to revert back to practices that are inequitable and empower the elite. Critical educators must carry on the dialogue necessary to empower the disenfranchised mathematically and undermine the social injustice and economic inequality that will result if this movement is embraced.
