2000-01 Annual Report, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Annual Reports

This has been IMSA's work since we opened in 1986. Now, in our 15th Anniversary year, we are ready to further expand our statewide programming and to more proactively share what we have learned about what works in the field of mathematics, science and technology teaching and learning. The time is right, the needs are great, and the stakes for public education have never been higher.

Profitability Of Crop Rotations In Iowa In A Stress Environment, Derrick N. Exner, R. M. Cruse Jan 2001

Profitability Of Crop Rotations In Iowa In A Stress Environment, Derrick N. Exner, R. M. Cruse

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Small grains crops have traditionally been included in Midwestern cropping systems, but their use is restricted by uncertain yields, poor prices, and lack of on-farm uses in operations without livestock. We compared the corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) crop rotation to actual or simulated three-yr rotations at two sites in Iowa between 1986 and 1989. Water was generally more limiting than was nitrogen, which produced minimal response in the corn to which it was applied. April-November precipitation at Nashua, Iowa ranged from 59 to 111 % of average, while at Des Moines, Iowa it was 77% of …

Toxicity Of Cedar River Water And Sediment To Larval Walleye, Todd A. Phillips, Robert C. Summerfelt Jan 2001

Toxicity Of Cedar River Water And Sediment To Larval Walleye, Todd A. Phillips, Robert C. Summerfelt

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Although all anthropogenic stressors affecting aquatic ecosystems have not been isolated, suspended solids, sediment, and pesticides are believed to be major factors in agroecosystems. In the spring of 1998 and 1999, static 48-h tests were conducted to determine the toxicity of water and sediment collected from the Cedar River to prolarval, postlarval I, and postlarval II walleye (Sttzostedzon vitreum). River water and sediment were not more toxic to any larval stage of walleye than reference water and sediment. Cedar River sediments, suspended solids, and water were examined for occurrence of the most common herbicides and insecticides in Iowa. No pesticides …

Is Concept Mapping An Effective Tool For Evaluation Of Student Learning In Science?, Linda Jean Foster Jan 2001

Is Concept Mapping An Effective Tool For Evaluation Of Student Learning In Science?, Linda Jean Foster

Theses Digitization Project

Concept mapping is a metacognitive learning strategy which often improves a learner's ability to construct new knowledge. This action research project was intended to determine the level of effectiveness of concept mapping as a student learning intervention. Students in two high school science classes constructed concept maps before and after instruction during a unit of study about volcanoes. The maps were analyzed for increases in complexity and indications of learning. The concept maps were then compared for differences by groups based on volcano unit test scores. Based on the analysis of the matched pairs of concept maps, those maps which …

A Reasoned Approach To The Teaching Of Evolution In The Public's Interest, William W. Cobern Jan 2001

A Reasoned Approach To The Teaching Of Evolution In The Public's Interest, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

Should school science “teach the controversy” about evolution? Yes–sort of. Evolution should be taught bearing in mind public interest in science, not the interests of the science community. Evolution almost always prompts “cosmic questions.” Not that evolution addresses any cosmic question per se; but, because evolution offers a mechanism for how things have come to be as they are, people quite wonder if evolution is a sufficient mechanism for what they believe about our world. People wonder if there isn’t something more that is needed. People wonder if what we believe about the world is amenable with ideas from …

In Defense Of Realism: It Really Is Commonsense, William W. Cobern, Cathleen C. Loving Jan 2001

In Defense Of Realism: It Really Is Commonsense, William W. Cobern, Cathleen C. Loving

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

“What is truth?” Pilot asked Jesus of Nazareth. For many in academe today this question seems quaintly passé. Rejection of “truth” goes hand-in-hand with the rejection of epistemological realism. Educational thought over the last decade has instead been dominated by anti-realist, instrumentalist ideas of two types: first by psychological constructivism and later by social constructivism. Social constructivism subsequently has been pressed to its logical conclusion in the form of relativistic multiculturalism. Proponents of both psychological constructivism and social constructivism value knowledge for its utility and eschew as irrelevant speculation any notion that knowledge is actually about reality. The arguments are …

The Thinking About Science Survey Instrument (Tsso): An Instrument For The Quantitative Study Of Socio-Cultural Sources Of Support And Resistance To Science, William W. Cobern Jan 2001

The Thinking About Science Survey Instrument (Tsso): An Instrument For The Quantitative Study Of Socio-Cultural Sources Of Support And Resistance To Science, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

Many scientists and science educators are concerned about the public’s ambiguous relationship with science and this public includes elementary teachers. Like many citizens, too many elementary teachers find science disconnected from everyday life and thinking. Science is a “school” subject - not an important part of everyday life. Some may believe that science conflicts with important personal beliefs they hold about other areas of life such as religion and art. Elementary teachers who feel this disconnection with science will at best approach science teaching as something one does if school authorities demand it. Given that we are now promoting constructivist …

Introduction, Neil P. Bernstein Jan 2001

Introduction, Neil P. Bernstein

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In this issue, the Iowa Academy of Science honors three of our colleagues who passed away in 2000. Duane Isely, Larry Eilers, and George Knaphus shared many of the same interests. All three were botanists, although George's research on fungi and heterotrophic protistans relegated him to the botany departments only by default. However, more importantly, all three were teachers. I believe that one of the lessons that they would have taught was the need to carefully document present patterns if we are to understand the future. However, many biologists poorly support this concept today.

Theism And Mathematical Realism, John Byl Jan 2001

Theism And Mathematical Realism, John Byl

ACMS Journal 2004

This paper examines connections between theism and mathematical realism. Mathematical realism, which offers the best account of mathematics, strongly supports theism. Theism, in turn, supports mathematical realism. Theism readily explains the intricate relations between mathematics, matter, and mind. The attributes of the biblical God provide a justification for classical mathematics.

Mathematics As Worship, David J. Stucki Jan 2001

Mathematics As Worship, David J. Stucki

ACMS Journal 2004

This paper treats worship in a broad, inclusive sense as the primary and necessary response of human beings to their creator. It provides a brief overview of the relationship between mathematics and theology from the Pythagoreans to the present. It argues that all knowledge is contingent upon faith and thus that contemplation of mathematical insights can lead to worship of God.
