Beyond Competition--Innovation For A Sustainable Future, Stephanie Pace Marshall
Beyond Competition--Innovation For A Sustainable Future, Stephanie Pace Marshall
Publications & Research
Dr. Marshall outlines her belief that the current context and conditions of schooling are far too constrained, prescribed and risk-averse for our children’s imagination, and as a result, actually mitigate against innovative thinking and creative and collaborative problem-solving. Authentic learning is a live encounter. She feels that we cannot mandate, punish or test our children into greatness and provides recommendations for educational transformation--not reform--to design the educational experiences needed by today's children.
Written Solutions Of Mathematical Word Problems, Marcia J. Smith
Written Solutions Of Mathematical Word Problems, Marcia J. Smith
Action Research Projects
In this action research study of my classroom of ten ninth grade algebra students, I investigated how my students expressed written solutions of mathematical word problems. I discovered that my students writing and performance improved as they experienced different strategies to attack problem solving. These experiences helped improve the confidence of my students in their problem solving skills and in their mathematical writing. I also discovered that my teaching style changed, as my students took on more responsibility for their learning. As a result of this research, I plan to implement problem solving activities in all my classrooms next year. …

Oscillation Theory Of Dynamic Equations On Time Scales, Raegan J. Higgins
Oscillation Theory Of Dynamic Equations On Time Scales, Raegan J. Higgins
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In past years mathematical models of natural occurrences were either entirely continuous or discrete. These models worked well for continuous behavior such as population growth and biological phenomena, and for discrete behavior such as applications of Newton's method and discretization of partial differential equations. However, these models are deficient when the behavior is sometimes continuous and sometimes discrete. The existence of both continuous and discrete behavior created the need for a different type of model. This is the concept behind dynamic equations on time scales. For example, dynamic equations can model insect populations that are continuous while in season, die …
C*-Extreme Points Of The Generalized State Space Of A Commutative C*-Algebra, Martha Gregg
C*-Extreme Points Of The Generalized State Space Of A Commutative C*-Algebra, Martha Gregg
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The generalized state space of a commutative C*-algebra, denoted SH(C(X)), is the set of positive unital maps from C(X) to the algebra B(H) of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space H. C*-convexity is one of several non-commutative analogs of convexity which have been discussed in this context. We show that a C*-extreme point of SH(C(X)) satisfies a certain spectral condition on the operators in the range of an associated measure, which is a positive operator-valued measure on …

Science And Social Studies: The Forgotten Content, Samantha Slaughter
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Abstract The daily curriculum of many elementary schools lacks instructional time in the content areas of science and social studies. Many teachers insist that they do not have the time or training to cover these content areas on a daily basis. This project will illustrate that through proper planning, integration, and professional development, teachers can feel empowered to teach these content areas. The project includes a succinct explanation of how science and social studies can be included on a daily basis in the regular classroom setting, a detailed curriculum map, daily schedule, and four basic integrated units. The curriculum map …

A Program Evaluation Of Supplemental Instruction For Developmental Mathematics At A Community College In Virginia, Marilyn Lawson Peacock
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
With the current emphasis on accountability and the importance of math skills in our present economy, the success of developmental mathematics students at community colleges is critical. How to improve the success of these developmental students has become the impetus for many educational initiatives. One educational innovation in tutoring, called supplemental instruction, has been successfully applied to high-risk courses which are defined to have a failure rate in excess of 30%. Mid-Atlantic Community College, in its Title III grant which seeks to improve the success of developmental students, selected supplemental instruction as its initiative. This program evaluation investigated the effects …
A Closer Look At The Crease Length Problem, Sean F. Ellermeyer
A Closer Look At The Crease Length Problem, Sean F. Ellermeyer
Faculty Articles
An optimization problem that appears as an exercise in most modern calculus textbooks is the crease length problem. Here, Ellermeyer provides a solution of the general crease length problem in which all possible foldings of a corner to the opposite edge are taken into account. One of his findings will be that the minimum crease length is never produced by a Case 2 fold and hence that the general crease length problem always yields a different minimum than the constrained problem that is treated in the textbooks. He discovers a criterion that determines which foldings must be performed in order …

Similar But Different: The Complexities Of Students' Mathematical Identities, Diane Skillicorn Hill
Theses and Dissertations
We, as a culture, tend to lump students into broad categories to describe their relationships with mathematics, such as ‘good at math’ or ‘hates math.’ This study focuses on five students each of whom could be considered ‘good at math,’ and shows how the beliefs that make up their mathematical identities are actually significantly different. The study examined eight beliefs that affect a student's motivation to do mathematics: confidence, anxiety, enjoyment of mathematics, skill level, usefulness of mathematics, what mathematics is, what it means to be good at mathematics, and how one learns mathematics. These five students' identities, which seemed …
