Science Notes - Support Program For Instructional Competency In Astronomy, Darrel Hoff

Astronomy education lacks a unified, national support program. The nation's 1,200-1,600 high school astronomy teachers are generally isolated from their peers. As many as 7,000 other teachers would like to develop astronomy courses but cannot find suitable materials. Approximately 20 percent of a typical earth science course is astronomy, and studies show earth science teachers generally have weak astronomy backgrounds. Astronomy resources for elementary grades exist, but, as in earth science, teacher preparation is often insufficient. To remedy these problems a plan, called Project SPICA, has been developed by the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).

The NSTA Convention Planning Committee is developing a special program that will help meet the needs of elementary teachers. The first National Elementary Science Day will be held on Friday, April 6, during the convention. An entire day of special events, sessions, exhibits and social activities will be provided especially for K8 teachers.

Maize (Zea mays L.) breeders emphasize selection within F2 populations derived from crosses of inbred lines: Studies of the inheritance of quantitative traits in maize have been conducted primarily for generically broad-based populations. Objectives of our study were to estimate the generic variability in F2 populations developed from crosses of related and unrelated lines and to determine the effects of five generations of random intermating of plants within F2 populations on the estimates of genetic variability. Estimates of additive genetic variability were greater in the unrelated line crosses, but the estimates were not significantly different before and …

Semiquantitative Measurement Of Fission Produced Gamma Ray Radioactivity In Soils At Dubuque, Iowa, James A. Dockal, James A. Dockal Sr.

Residual fission-product radionuclide contamination (fallout) in soils at Dubuque, Iowa was evaluated with an Exploration geometrics gamma ray scintillometer in 1985 and after the Chernobyl accident in 1986. Anomalous amounts of gamma ray radiation were found near where downspouts discharged storm runoff from the roof of a dwelling. The 1985 residual cesium-13 7 activity in the soils of the area was found to be 0.2 pCi/gram with an areal contamination of 16 ± nCi/m2. Activities associated with the soils near the discharge points of the downspouts ranged as high as 8 pCi/gram. This contamination seems to have occurred prior to …

Cytoplasmic Effect On Groat Protein Content In Lnterspecific Matings Of Avena Sativa L. And A. Sterilis L., A. Rezai, K. J. Frey

Thirty sets of reciprocal isopopulations, each with 20 Fi-derived oat lines from the BC0, BC1, and BC2 of all possible matings among five Awia slerilis L. accessions and two A. saliva cultivars, were evaluated in a replicated field trial to determine whether groat protein content was influenced by cytoplasmic inheritance and to study associations between protein content and agronomic traits. A. slerili cytoplasm had no direct effect on groat protein content, but significant interactions between the cytoplasms and nuclear genes from A. saliva and A. s1erilis were detected. This paper begins by outlining an argument advanced against mathematical realism by Philip Kitcher. It then sketches the life and work of the great Christian philosopher and theologian, Augustine of Hippo. It discusses Augustine’s view that there exist eternal ideas in the mind of God that God used as templates in his creation of material objects. Among these are ideas about numbers and other mathematical objects. It also discusses Augustine’s understanding of how human beings have access to such ideas. It concludes with a discussion of some possible objections to Augustine’s perspective.

In the past ten years, major reports have appeared criticizing the educational system. A number of these suggest that schools are not producing adults willing to take an active citizenship role in society. Such reports as A Nation at Risk (NCEE, 1983) and The Carnegie Report (Boyer, 1983) are among many general education studies which address this point. Iowa geodes have long been objects of curiosity, their sparkling interiors containing some of the most beautiful crystals to be found anywhere in the Midwest. Although geodes are known from many localities around the world, one of the most productive and famous collecting regions is encompassed within a 35-mile radius of Keokuk, Iowa. Rock collectors commonly refer to geodes from this region as "Keokuk geodes." In keeping with the world-renowned status of the Iowa geodes, the Iowa General Assembly declared the geode as the official "State Rock" in 1967.

In a recent letter to ISTJ, Marshalltown science teacher James J. Hungerford strongly recommended a simulation of recombinant DNA that he found in the April 1987 issue of The Science Teacher. Using Christie L. Jenkins' article, Recombinant Paper Plasmids as a guide, Hungerford was able to reproduce the simulation for his students and found that they both enjoyed and learned from the experience.

The poster illustrates various aspects of the water cycle from precipitation to transpiration and evaporation including runoff, erosion, saturation, groundwater movement and the location of and movement through various aquifers.
