The Modern Talking Picture Service recently released its latest Free Loan Materials catalog. Included in the listings are videos, 16mm films, kits, posters, booklets and folders (there is a nominal fee for some of the teaching materials) designed for use in science, home economics/ consumer education, health/physical education, social studies, agriculture, ecology and other subjects. All of the materials are most appropriate for use in secondary schools.

A Comparative Summary Of Instructional Science Materials And Outdoor Experiences For Students In Iowa Elementary Schools From 1980-1987, Greg Stefanich, Mary Norton, Jan Anderson

Following the development of the "new science programs" in the late 1960's, Iowa became a leading state in the adoption and implementation of activity-based science in elementary classrooms. A survey conducted by Anderson in 1980 indicated that approximately 40 percent of the school districts in Iowa were using NSF developed programs in their elementary buildings. Research on the NSF curricula indicates that the programs were more effective in raising student performance and attitudes than the traditional reading-based programs. Shymansky (1989) indicates that students using the NSF curricula showed significant gains in achievement, process skills, perceptions and analytic skills. They generally …

Inexpensive Computer Software For Science Teaching In Iowa Schools, John B. Cook

Between January and April 1989, the author collected and compiled information on inexpensive instructional computer software to support science teaching. For each piece of software, information was collected on the topics it covered, how it could be obtained, and how much it would cost for school purchase in Iowa. The complied data was limited to inexpensive software for two reasons: (1) to keep the size of the data base manageable, and (2) to focus on software that schools can afford to obtain.

The White House has announced the 1989 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching. Across the country, 112 dedicated and talented junior high, middle and senior high school science and mathematics teachers were selected to receive the awards. In Iowa, the recipients were Earl Ockenga (mathematics) of Malcolm Price Laboratory School, Cedar Falls, and Floyd F. Sturtevant (science) of Ames High School, Ames.

A companion to the Elementary Science Day is the annual Council for Elementary Science International "CESI Meet, Greet, Make and Take" workshop. This popular convention session provides a wide variety of activities and ideas for teaching science in the elementary classroom. The setting of this workshop is informal. Presenters station themselves around the room as the participants move freely from station to station, learning about the activities, constructing instructional materials and discussing how they might incorporate these new ideas in their teaching.

The American Physical Society (APS), in cooperation with several corporate sponsors, has made several $2500 scholarships available to minority undergraduate students studying physics. For each scholarship awarded, $2000 will be given the student, $500 the hosting college or university. Any Black, Hispanic or Native American United States citizens who plan to major in physics and who are high school seniors or college freshmen or sophomores may apply for the scholarships.

Additions To The Iowa Pteridophyte Flora - Iii, James H. Peck

To prior reports on the studies of the Iowa pteridophyre flora, five taxa (Botrychium campestre Wagner & Farrar, Botrychimn matricariifolium A. Braun, CyJtopterislragilis (L) Bernh., Cystopteris laurentiana (Weath.) Blasdell, and Lycopodium inundatum L.) are added, along with 215 new county occurrence records for 39 taxa. Currently, the Iowa preridophyte flora consists of 70 taxa, supported with 1656 county occurrence records; only 72 (4%) of these records are based solely on collections made before 1950.

In the 25 years since the publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring the public has come to realize the environmental impact of heavy use of chemical pesticides. To add insult to injury, many insects, including the disease vector, the mosquito, are now virtually resistant to standard chemical pesticides. Biotechnology is now providing a positive response to these dilemmas through the production and development of improved forms of microbial pest control agents: biological pesticides.
