One of the four Project Synthesis goal clusters for science education focuses on meeting the personal needs of students who are maturing in a scientific/technological society. Many existing science programs fall short in this regard, particularly if teachers are seriously interested in changing learner behavior for the better. One component of learner behavior that is highly consistent with the personal needs goal cluster of Project Synthesis is helping students become more intelligent consumers in a scientific society.

This opportunity to introduce myself through the pages of the Iowa Science Teachers Journal causes me to feel a bit of nostalgia. Years ago, I was editor of this journal. Approximately one month ago, I filled the position of State Science Consultant, replacing Jack Gerlovich, who is now on the faculty at Drake University. For the past 12 years, I was on contract from the University of Iowa to the Iowa Energy Policy Council (now the Energy Bureau of the Department of Natural Resources).

Science Notes - Natural History Potpourri Workshop, Carl W. Bollwinkel

Teachers have indicated a need for a week-long workshop dealing with basic natural history topics such as trees, prairie flowers, birds, pond animals and rocks. These topics will be explored via field trips, classroom presentations and application activities during week-long workshops to be presented at the Iowa Conservation Education Center at Springbrook State Park near Guthrie Center, Iowa. The beginning dates for the workshops are June 3 and June 17. Activities will begin on Sunday evening and culminate on Friday afternoon.

A National Computer Conferencing Network For Science Education, Jack A. Gerlovich

If science educators -- curriculum planners, supervisors and teachers -- were linked by telecommunications networks, all could experience the advantages of a conference without the usual disadvantages, such as travel costs or loss of valuable work hours. And these experiences could be frequent, regular and on-going. Motivated by such possibilities, the Council of State Science Supervisors began setting up a national telecommunications network for science education in 1986. Plant-Parasitic Nematodes In Iowa, Don C. Norton

Ninety-nine species of plant-parasitic nematodes are recorded from Iowa. Twenty-seven are new state records. Most samples were collected from around maize or from prairies or woodlands. Similarity (Sorensen's index) of species was highest for the maize-prairie habitats (0.49), compared with maize-woodlands (0. 23), or prairie-woodland (0. 3 7) habitats. Nematode communities were most diverse in prairies with a Shannon-Weiner index (H') of 2.74, compared with 1.65 and 1.07 for woodlands and maize habitats, respectively. Evenness of species (J') was 0.41, 0.78, and 0.48 for maize, prairies, and woodlands, respectively.

Starting in 1976, annual reports have served as a continuing record of the activities of the Iowa Academy of Science. These augment a 100 year history of the Academy which was written in the centennial year of 1975.

This report covers the period from July 1, 1988 to June 30, 1989. It is based on the official records of the Academy (committee reports, Board minutes, correspondence) as well as the recollections, impressions and musings of the author, who is writing his first annual report.

The Izaak Walton League of America is offering free subscriptions of its quarterly publication, Outdoor Ethics, to interested science educators. Outdoor Ethics was created to help its readers understand the importance of the behavior of all users of the outdoors and the impact that behavior has on natural resources. Recent issues of Outdoor Ethics have included articles about hunting, illegal animal collecting, wilderness expansion and camping.
