An extensive program of educational experiences at the Iowa Conservation Education Center located at Springbrook State Park near Guthrie Center, Iowa, is being planned by the Iowa Conservation Commission and the University of Northern Iowa. The Environmental Education Field Station program will provide a variety of learning activities for a broad audience. The program for summer 1985 is designed for teachers and naturalists.

Many states have implemented legislation in an effort to improve science and mathematics education in our nation's schools. Last year; the Iowa General Assembly enacted House File #532. The bill established several innovative state programs designed to encourage greater emphasis in the study of mathematics and science. Three of these programs were to be administered by the Iowa College Aid Commission, and had direct influence on K-12 science courses, teachers, and prospective teachers.

Science Notes - Nsta Adopts Standards For The Preparation And Certification Of Secondary School Science Teachers

In July, the NSTA Board of Directors adopted a statement of "Recommended Standards for the Preparation and Certification of Secondary School Teachers of Science." The document was built upon the work of the NSTA teacher education committee, which developed similar statements for the elementary, middle school, and junior high two years ago. Writing and designing of the final document was accomplished by William C. Ritz and Kenneth R. Mechling, NSTA directors of teacher education; Ronald Cleminson, AETS president; and Bettye Sue Tubertini, teacher education committee member.

In Geology of Iowa: Over Two Billion Years of Change, author Wayne I. Anderson presents a chronological account of the rock formations that underlie the farmland and cities of Iowa. Recently published by the Iowa State University Press, Geology of Iowa begins with a description of the geologic setting of the state in the Stable Interior; a region of generally flat-lying sedimentary rocks that show little deformation. Anderson comments, "At any one location in Iowa, the rocks typically appear to be horizontal - as flat as a pancake."

The letter from Richard Wilson in the Winter '83- 84 ISTJ not only gives me an opportunity to endorse the scheduling of science/math classes on Saturdays and during the evenings with part-time teachers but also as another ex-math/science teacher, to voice opinions in several other aspects of teaching. Most educators today believe that writing has a significant place in the curriculum. More importantly; many teachers agree that writing instruction should be a school-wide effort. In one study; 80 percent of the English teachers, 60 percent of the social studies teachers and 60 percent of the science teachers agreed that it was a responsibility that should be shared by both English and content area teachers (Tighe and Koziol, 1982).

At each table are a balance, metric scale, graduated cylinder, and six cubical solids and six spherical solids; two of each solid type are made of aluminum, two of plastic, and two of steel; one of each pair of solids is larger than the other.
