Science Notes - A Program For Teaching Issue Investigation

A set of modules designed to teach the investigation and evaluation of science related social issues has just been published by Stipes Publishing Company. This middle and junior high school program was written by a curriculum development team composed of two middle school/junior high instructors, a resource specialist, and three science/ environmental educators.

The study of the unique geology and botany of Alaska, Yukon and British Columbia will be the objective of a camping trip planned for June 9 to July 23, 1986. The field study program is designed for elementary and secondary teachers, college students and interested adults. The program is sponsored by the Iowa Academy of Science and is directed by Frank Starr of the Waterloo Community Schools with the instructional team led by James Walters of the University of Northern Iowa Earth Science Dept. University credit will be available.

Many highly able and motivated students in science have interest in research. Student participation in the total science process, including data collection, recording, reporting, experimental interpretation, synthesis and even publication, can provide the ultimate means of activating science potential. A cooperative effort between the American Cancer Society (ACS) - Iowa Division and The University of Iowa has provided this type of experience, as a facet of the Research Participation Program. For the past 12 years, 100 students who have completed grade 10, 11, or 12, representing 50 Iowa communities, have received financial support from the ACS to participate in the …

The Education Committee of the Iowa Academy of Science, the Executive Committee of the Iowa Science Teachers Section, and the Iowa Council Science Supervisors met recently to review the proposed revisions in rules fi teacher education and certification. They expressed concern about a number changes that are being planned in the area of science certification.

Science Notes - New Course In Natural History At Iowa Lakeside Laboratory

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

During the summer of 1986, a course in natural history, developed and first taught at the 1985 summer session, will be offered at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory. The course focuses upon the major habitat types in Iowa: prairies, woodlands and wetlands. The objective of the course is to familiarize students with important species, community structure and function, and sampling techniques in each habitat. An experimental component asks students to carry out a research project. The course is taught by Dr. Paul Christiansen, Cornell College, and Dr. Richard Lampe, Buena Vista College, with help from Jean Prior from the Iowa Geological Survey.

The Attitudes Of The Public Toward Science And Science Education, Robert E. Yager

At the mid-point of the 1980's, science has once again risen in public esteem a point parallel to that which existed in the mid 1950's. David Yankelovich (1984) has recently presented data regarding changes in public attitudes toward science. This positive perception of science has continued to improve during the last fi years, as evidenced by follow-up studies at the University of Iowa.

Halley's Comet Returns, Lawrence A. Kelsey

On October 16, 1982, astronomers at Palomar Observatory, using an electronic camera attached to the 200-inch telescope, detected a dim 24th magnitude speck. Seventy-one years after it was last seen, Halley's comet had been recovered.

With only two exceptions, no significant differences are found · the profiles of most effective and least effective teachers. Druva and Anderson (1983) recently reported the results of a meta analysis of significant research in science teacher education. Their findings suggest that most factors believed to impact the teaching performance of science instructors do not, in fact, play a very important role. Despite these findings, many science educators continue to accept the same old assumptions and beliefs concerning what is needed to improve science teacher education programs. Eight different content courses relating to the environment will be offered in June and July at the Conservation Education Center in Springbrook State Park near Guthrie Center; Iowa. The Education Center; which has air-conditioned dormitories, dining hall and lounge building, and classrooms, is located in a wooded area with nearby ponds and prairie remnants.
