The primary teacher has a fundamental task in science education. The responsibility today is greater than ever to perform the science education task carefully, with specific curriculum goals clearly and sequentially mapped out. Primary teachers work with very impressionable material - young students. They lay the foundation of formal learning. No structure is sound or lasting if it has a weak or unsound foundation. High school experimentation during the study of botany generally includes observing photobiological processes. These might include photosynthesis, phototrophism and photoperiodism. Experiments with these processes often involve exposing a plant or plant tissue to a light source covered with a piece of colored cellophane or plastic. Measurement of the light intensity at a specific wave length is often necessary.

Awards were presented to several of Iowa's outstanding science educators at the meeting of ISTS in Ames on November 1. Special recognition was given to Dr. Clifford McCollum, retiring Dean of the College of Natural Sciences of the University of Northern Iowa, for his many years of outstanding service to science and science educators of Iowa. The-Iowa Science Teachers Outstanding Service Award for 1984 was presented to Dean Hartman. Introductory high school biology courses generally include a discussion of enzymes. Enzymes, commonly defined as biological catalysts, speed up biochemical reactions and are involved in nearly every biochemical process that occurs in a living organism. Many texts currently being used provide diagrams of enzyme action and a discussion of the "lock and key fit" of enzyme and substrate. Laboratory manuals accompanying these texts frequently indicate the usefulness of the chewed cracker experiment to demonstrate the presence and ·action of salivary amylase. Though this experiment uses an enzyme, it does not always accomplish the desired result - to enable the students …

During the past few years the scientific community at large and the education community in particular have awakened to the public's concern about restoring traditional values in American society. The theory of evolution is seen by many Fundamentalists as responsible for the destruction of these values. Thus, in an attempt to restore this value system, a substantial part of the public has supported the movement to teach "creation science," which purports to show that a literal interpretation of the Genesis account of origins, including the notion that the universe is only a few thousand years old, can be supported scientifically.

How old is the earth? Where did it come from? How was it made? Junior high students are determined to solve all life's mysteries, and therefore geology with its wealth of clues is a likely target for their curiosity. The earth sciences seem to hold an almost mystical fascination for the junior high age child possibly because the adolescent is beginning to realize he is part of the whole universe and not just of a family, and is using his powers of observation to see what this universe holds.

National concerns about science education have suggested a number of factors which are contributing to what is now being called a crisis. One such factor is that colleges and universities are producing fewer certified science teachers, even as many science teachers are leaving the classroom to pursue other employment. A second factor is that the average age of the science teacher is increasing and many teachers have not continued to update their training. The word paleontology is taken from the Greek words 'palaios' meaning old, 'ontos' a being, and 'logos' to study (Hamlyn, 1968). It is usually loosely translated to mean 'the study of past life', or 'the study of fossils'. Though the word itself has been used only in recent times, an interest in fossils (as interesting objects literally "dug out of the earth") is probably as old as humankind. The subject of this paper is the development of ideas that deal with the significance and origin of fossils. The explanations range from ancient times up to the nineteenth century when fossils …
