Survey Shows Chemistry Textbooks And Teaching Practices In Iowa To Be Conventional, Robert W. Hanson

Part of a survey of the 485 high school chemistry teachers in Iowa in the spring of 1984 dealt with the textbooks used in chemistry courses offered in their schools and with changes in emphasis in teaching chemistry during the past three years. The target group of teachers included 455 from public schools and 30 from parochial schools. Seventy-eight percent of the public school and fifty percent of the parochial school teachers responded. Schools and school districts of all sizes were represented among the respondents.

The White House recently announced the names of 108 teachers honored with Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching. Iowa teachers Ross L. Iverson (science) from Miller Junior High of Marshalltown and Christopher R. Olsen (mathematics) from Washington Senior High School of Cedar Rapids were among the recipients of this prestigious award.

In order to identify teaching problems and student motivational factors and to determine which environmental topics of study are perceived to be of greatest importance for grades 4-12, the Iowa Conservation Education Center (ICEC) conducted a survey of Iowa science teachers. The background of the teachers who responded to the survey and their perceived needs for student groups were described in a recent issue of ISTJ]. The needs for teacher workshops will be presented in this article.

Every day, the earth is bombarded by an estimated 100 tons of interplanetary debris. Most of this is produced by micrometeorites that vaporize high in the atmosphere and slowly settle to earth as a fine dust. Only a rare once-a-day small meteorite survives its passage through the atmosphere to impact the earth. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these go undetected or undiscovered. As a result, it is an important event when a sizable meteorite fall occurs which is well observed and documented. Teaching for Thinking: Creativity in the Classroom is a new video series in teaching/professional development designed to help teachers produce more creative student thinking. This new series from the Agency for Instructional Technology, which both explores theory and investigates classroom practice, is aimed at middle-school and high-school teachers of all subjects. Each of the twelve 30-minute programs features an interview with a guest expert and several visits to actual classrooms where master teachers employ specific creativity-enhancing techniques.

End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) is the term used by nephrologists describe cases of renal failure that have progressed to the point where continued viability depends on a substitution for kidney function. A generation ago ESRD was a terminal condition because there was no substitute for kidney function. Survival time depended on factors such as age -the presence of complicating diseases such as diabetes. Today, dialysis technologies are available that promise many additional years for ESRD patients. Kidney transplants have become fairly common but are preceded by some form of dialysis or followed by some form of dialysis in the event …
