Although many people love the Iowa weather, some have been encouraged by it to take a ticket to Texas. Those of us who have recently traveled through Texas have met many Iowans there whose ticket to Texas was the Iowa economy. The letter which my colleague shared struck me as being a science teacher's ticket to Texas, courtesy of the Iowa economy, the Iowa legislature and the local school board.

The first South Central Iowa Science and Engineering Fair (SCISEF) will be held at Simpson College on March 28, 1987. The two top high school exhibitors at this regional competition will earn trips to the International Science and Engineering Fair in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in May, as well as $500 college scholarships.

Teaching effectiveness is a much debated topic. Yager and Lunetta (1984) have suggested that the lack of teacher effectiveness is a part of the current crisis in science education. Hawley, et al. (1984) makes it clear that teachers are important determiners of student achievement, and Medley (1979) concurs, saying "The effect of schooling on the individual pupil depends to a considerable extent on how his teacher is." But how can teacher effectiveness be determined? Historically, teacher effectiveness has been judged to be a product of a variety of factors including personality types, teaching methods, classroom climate and teacher competencies. Others …

A primary level lesson based on learning to know major plant parts is included in almost every elementary science textbook series. This lesson not only teaches the names of the organs of higher plants, but also offers an experience in classification using the learning cycle (Rubba, 1984). The plant part puzzles needed for this activity can be prepared easily from materials at hand and stored for reuse.

Since receiving a federal grant in November 1985, 25 Keystone area educators have been working with AEA 1 consultants and University of Iowa science education specialists to expand the use of investigative activities in the science studies of Iowa students. The purpose of this journal is to provide an avenue for sharing ideas in the field of science education. Some old ideas which may not be widely known are certainly worth sharing. The new ideas which are worth sharing we particularly treasure - perhaps because there are so few of them. Most of the time we are doing a bit of rearranging of ideas and finding new applications. These are certainly helpful, and to share them seems a worthwhile goal.

Iowa, along with many other states, has been faced with a loss of qualified physics teachers to the private sector for better salaries. This has created a shortage of people qualified to teach physics. A study by Howe and Gerlovich (1983) indicated that the majority of states in the United States are experiencing serious shortages of "qualified" science and math teachers. There have been indications that exposure to electromagnetic fields produced by voltage power lines have permanent effects on living organisms. I found studies on electromagnetic field effects on rodents and humans, but there has been little research done with plants. The purpose of my study was to record any measurable effects on desert shrubs in an area of Succor Creek, Oregon, produced by an adjacent 500 KV power line.
