"Gretch" may be considered a material or an experience. The relationship between the material and the experience may have something in common with the relationship of matter and energy, although the creator of "Gretch" need not operate in the same intellectual sphere as Einstein. Currently, the original creator of "Gretch" is not known, and the name "Gretch" (which will be used temporarily until the original name is found) was formed by the author's blending of his source of information about the stuff and the nature of it. The key to understanding and explaining the physical world around us is observation. The recent study "Vegetation Communities of Ledges State Park, Boone County, Iowa" Johnson-Groh, 1985) is largely observation. On the other extreme, even the most theoretical research done with paper, pencil and computer must be compared with observations of that which it hopes to explain. The first step in doing science, or studying science, is to observe.

The National Marine Educators Association (NMEA) has announced the beginning of competition for the fourth annual National Youth World of Water Awards. Up to 20 high school science fair projects will be selected for this honor. Projects will be judged based on their creativity, scientific thought, thoroughness and clarity. All projects must deal with a topic in marine or aquatic science or engineering.

The Ninth Biennial CHEM ED conference will be at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, in August 1987. Over 100 sessions will be held including lectures, panel discussions, demonstrations, computer lectures and workshops and make-and-take workshops. As of October 1986, more than 50 chemistry teachers have submitted abstracts of presentations to the program committee.

"What is this?" In answer to this frequently asked question, a name is usually given. Naming often terminates inquiry, but it need not if the meaning of the name is known. The meaning usually provides a bridge to inquiry into the life style of plants and animals and the function and characteristics of inanimate science objects. The Dictionary of Word Roots & Combining Forms is a concise tool for finding the interesting bits of meaning which may be derived from the names of the objects brought into the classroom.

Many teachers of methods courses for future secondary science teachers probably share my observation that high marks in conventional college science courses do not always indicate a good grasp of how science has developed as a human enterprise. In spite of efforts of curriculum developers and vast expenditures of public funds to improve science teaching in our secondary schools, the typical science background of a beginning teacher consists of a body of content with traditional disciplinary boundaries created by departments that view science in terms of their own specialized subject matter. In order to identify teaching problems and student motivational factors, and to determine which environmental topics of study are perceived to be of greatest importance for grades 4-12, the Iowa Conservation Education Center (CEC) conducted a survey of Iowa science teachers. The results of this survey should be helpful to teachers planning environmental activities or field trips. The information will also aid various organizations in their efforts to improve services for student groups and teacher workshops.

During the past two years, as I have worked with the University of Iowa's Chautauqua program, I have become concerned that relatively few science teachers have begun to incorporate Science/fechnology/Society (STS) materials into their existing curriculum. Lack of a concrete definition of Science/fechnology/Society has often served to frustrate teachers and disinterest them in using the concept even though they have already used many of the ideas in their teaching. Heidi Hopp, one of my students, has developed the following method to press and dry herbarium specimens in a microwave oven. I have experimented with various plants using Heidi's method and have found that it works most of the time. While this method works best with non-waxy thin foliage (i.e. Poinsettia) it does a fair job on juicy plants (i.e. African violets) and waxy ones (i.e. Pin oak).

Ten Iowa high school seniors have received four-year, full-tuition scholarships designed for young Iowans interested in careers in science. The ten biotechnology scholarships in agriculture were awarded to students who will enroll in Iowa State University's College of Agriculture to study the basic sciences that undergird biotechnology.

The Criteria for Analysis and Selection of Science Textbooks Project has worked since April 1985 to improve science textbooks and related materials used by teachers and students. Science teachers, administrators, publishers, researchers, and others have joined to focus attention on issues that must be considered to successfully bring about the changes we need.
