Thinking About Thinking Skills, Alice Krueger

Thinking skill instruction for school-age children is a significant topic for today's educators to consider. A coalition of 27 educational groups, including the National Education Association and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, has been formed to promote thinking skill instruction in the nation's classrooms (Lytle, 1986). A poll of ASCD members shows that about 90 percent want better thinking skill instruction to be a major priority in the coming year (Beyer, 1984). Educators taking the Graduate Student Examinations now have to think through a section on reasoning.

Somewhere during undergraduate days, all students encounter a fork in the science education road. One way leads to teaching, along a path festooned with education, psychology and "general" courses. This road leads into a people oriented, less specialized and very demanding form of science activity. The other fork in that road leads toward specialization and the "publish or perish" life of a university or industrial scientist. College students who take this other fork become non-teaching scientists, researchers, authors and those who are invited to speak at symposia. They lead a different sort of professional life.

Last summer several leaders in business, government and education recognized the importance of quality science and mathematics for Iowans. Further they recognized that, to quote Ernest Boyer, "In many high schools in America, mediocrity and excellence walk hand in hand." They felt confident that Boyer's observation also was true for K-12 science and mathematics in Iowa. The planning committee for the Iowa Alliance for Science began its work with two thoughts in mind: (1) the importance of science and mathematics and (2) the recognition of excellence presently in our schools. Student Research - Inhibition Of Microorganisms By Citrus Peel Oils, Patrick Teague

Oils of citrus peels contain a chemical which has exhibited insecticide properties. Citrus oils might also have natural antibiotic or antifungicide properties which could prove beneficial to mankind. The purpose of this project was to analyze the possible inhibition of microorganisms by oils of citrus peels. Five citrus fruit peels were tested for bacterial or fungal inhibition on Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus and Aspergillus niger. Oils of lemon peel showed an inhibition zone on the A. niger in the first trial. In the second experiment, all of the citrus peel oils showed an inhibition zone on the A. …

Geology suffers from two enduring stereotypes. The first stereotype is that geology is "about rocks and minerals," period. It is true that the materials, the configurations of matter, studied in geology are largely rocks and minerals, but the study of geology goes much further than this simple intention. It has a lot more to say about the world in which we live than just a study of earth materials. The second stereotype concerns the reasons one should study geology. An earlier ISTJ article (Stout, 1986) presented several methods for demonstrating the importance of observation in scientific inquiry. The blue bottle demonstration described there illustrates the use of indirect observations in science. The demonstration described here carries the concept of indirect observation further. It can stand alone, or be integrated with the blue bottle demonstration for a more complete discussion of the nature of science.

Stephen Jay Gould, the Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology at Harvard University, recently spoke at a meeting of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) in Washington, D.C. An eloquent spokesperson for the earth sciences, Gould holds a degree in paleontology from Columbia University. The American Geological Institute has made a video tape of his talk available for purchase. This article, a review of the tape, is for the benefit of science teachers who may wish to buy a copy.

The question "How do plants get to the places where they are growing?" leads to a study of plant anatomy and the interaction of plants, people and the environment. The topic as presented here is appropriate for study in the intermediate and middle school grades but can be adapted for both lower grades and high school study. It is suggested that the activity be taught as a learning cycle. "Plantportation" is best taught in the autumn when an abundance of seeds is available.

Likewise, its continued emergence in science education is not coincidental. There were no elephants with two trunks, no corn plants with four ears and no humans turned into Frankensteins, but there was evidence of recombinant DNA, transformation and cloned organisms. During the first week in August, 26 high school instructors from across the state and two college instructors received training in the laboratory skills of recombinant DNA at Drake University. A workshop entitled "Interpreting the Heartland" is being offered by Region V of the National Association of Interpretation. The program will run April 7-10, 1988, and has been planned to emphasize the cultural and natural history of the Omaha, Nebraska, region with concurrent sessions, panel discussions, workshops, special speakers and field trips. Program topics will include evaluating interpretation, living history workshops, hands-on educational kits, discovery room development, storytelling, Project WILD, folklore as an interpretive tool and blending natural and human history.
