Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine, Volume 24, Issue 01, published in 2008. The theme of this issue is Urbane. This issue examines the urban and cosmopolitan dimensions of Appalachian life, challenging the notion that the region is defined solely by rural traditions. Articles explore city culture, historic resorts, independent bookstores, intentional communities, and public arts initiatives, while also reflecting on places such as Pittsburgh, Asheville, Chattanooga, and Birmingham as centers of cultural exchange and innovation. Through essays, poetry, and features on music, food, and literature, the issue presents Appalachia as a region where urban life, cultural sophistication, and …

Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine
Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine, Volume 24, Issue 02, published in 2008. The theme of this issue is Fabric of Appalachia. This issue explores the literal and symbolic fabric that shapes Appalachian culture, from textiles and clothing to the traditions, labor, and identities woven into everyday life. Articles examine quilting, chenille bedspreads, work wear, and protest T-shirts, alongside stories of artisans, farmers, and families whose crafts and livelihoods reflect the region's material culture. Using 'The Autobiography Of Malcolm X' To Teach Introductory Sociology, Brent D. Harger, Tim Hallett
Using 'The Autobiography Of Malcolm X' To Teach Introductory Sociology, Brent D. Harger, Tim Hallett
Sociology Faculty Publications
In this chapter, we make the case for using The Autobiography of Malcolm X to teach introductory sociology classes. While The Autobiography of Malcolm X is an autobiography and not a novel, we summarize the literature on using novels in sociology and compare this literature to our own experiences using autobiographies in the classroom. We then describe how autobiographies are particularly helpful for introducing students to the concept of the ‘‘sociological imagination’’ before highlighting this with an in-class exercise. Finally, we discuss student feedback and some of the drawbacks to using autobiographies and the extent to which these drawbacks can …

The Incorporation Of Alcohol Awareness Activities In The Hospitality Administration Curricula, Dianna Blankenship, Irma S. Jones
The Incorporation Of Alcohol Awareness Activities In The Hospitality Administration Curricula, Dianna Blankenship, Irma S. Jones
Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications
Hospitality administration programs provide students with knowledge of basic principles underlying the industry and prepare them to assume responsible roles in business and society. A growing body of evidence suggests that providing information to students about accurate drinking norms is associated with decreased drinking on campus (U.S. Department of Education, Higher Education Center, 2006). Accredited hospitality administration programs in the United States were surveyed to determine the extent to which alcohol awareness activities are included in courses that cover the role of legal and ethical managerial behavior concerning beverage management.

Marketing Seventh-Day Adventist Higher Education : College-Choice Motivators And Barriers, Vinita Sauder
Dissertations
Purpose. Approximately 75% of Seventh-day Adventist college-bound youth do not attend the church's 15 colleges in North America. This study explored the views of Adventist college-bound participants regarding the factors (motivators and barriers) that influence college choice.
Method. Utilizing a mixed methods approach, qualitative and quantitative data were collected in a sequential two-phase design. Insights from focus groups conducted in Los Angeles and Nashville guided the development of a nationwide telephone survey of college-bound Adventists. Three groups sorted by type of high school were identified from a sample size of 226 and compared in terms of awareness and college-choice motivators …
