Geological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

The COVID-19 pandemic provided education researchers with a natural experiment: an opportunity to investigate the impacts of a system-wide, involuntary move to online teaching and to assess the characteristics of individuals who adapted more readily. To capture the impacts in real time, our team recruited college-level geoscience instructors through the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) and American Geophysical Union (AGU) communities to participate in our study in the spring of 2020. Each weekday for three successive weeks, participants (n = 262) were asked to rate their experienced disruption in four domains: teaching, research, ability to communicate with their …

Sometimes Finding Nothing Is Something: Case In Point-- Shrinking The Gap Between Emerging Bilingual Learners And English Fluent Students, Michael W. Corrigan, Douglas Grove, Sage Andersen, Josepih T. Wong, Bradley S. Hughes

Elementary & Secondary Education Faculty Research

For United States of America (USA) and other developed countries, science achievement gaps begin to emerge in elementary and primary school. Such gaps between USA student groups typically are connected to socio-economic status (SES) and issues such as students still learning the English language. Through an experimental design, this National Science Foundation funded study explores how integrating the arts into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) curriculum and leading with a more STEAM first approach (e.g., curriculum which integrates science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) might provide more equitable science learning opportunities for elementary or primary grade level students. How Female Stem Undergraduate Students Form Their Science Identity, Todd Martin Medovich Feb 2022

How Female Stem Undergraduate Students Form Their Science Identity, Todd Martin Medovich

All Theses And Dissertations

This qualitative case study describes how female science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students choose their undergraduate major, the obstacles they faced when making that choice, and how they overcome gender-based obstacles. These descriptions illuminate the manner in which they form their science identity.

There is a gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines (Viadero, 2009). This has been attributed to both biological and sociocultural causes. The biological basis for this disparity includes evidence of physiological differences between females and males, as well as the microaggressions and sexual harassment stemming from these differences (Bottia et al., 2015). …

Undergraduate College Student Perceptions Of Empathy Cultivation In The Humanities Classroom: A Qualitative Narrative Inquiry, D. E. Fulford

All Theses And Dissertations

Empathy—the human attribute of possessing concern for other humans in a way that others’ emotions are mirrored—is both an inborn characteristic, and one that can be taught in various settings throughout one’s life. This qualitative narrative inquiry study explored perceptions from undergraduate college students regarding empathy cultivation in the college humanities classroom setting using the theory of mind—the perspective-taking ability to infer other people’s intentions. Through Zoom-based, semi-structured interviews, data was collected from five undergraduate students at the university research site. Using thematic analysis to examine the data, four prominent themes emerged: (a) empathy cultivation in the classroom, (b) empathy …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Professional Learning Experiences Intended To Promote Growth In Their Discipline And Pedagogy, Karl O'Leary Feb 2022

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Professional Learning Experiences Intended To Promote Growth In Their Discipline And Pedagogy, Karl O'Leary

All Theses And Dissertations

Professional learning is an essential tool for teachers to effectively learn and grow in their discipline. The professional learning model has not developed in tandem with the teacher certification requirements, as well as the changing dynamics in education. With the increase in mandated requirements, teachers have not witnessed an enhanced professional learning model that can align with their adult needs and guide them along the path to accomplish the goal of learning.

Preliminary research identified a gap in relationships from professional learning to the implementation in the classroom (Fulmer, 2016). The study’s research problem was that while professional learning experiences …

Chronic Absenteeism: Exploring Challenges And Obstacles That Impact Students’ Attendance In Northern Maine Rural Schools, Leland Caron

All Theses And Dissertations

Educational success relies heavily upon consistent school attendance (Rogers & Feller, 2018). In Maine, a student is identified as chronically absent when 10% or more of the days enrolled in school are missed due to excused or unexcused absences (Maine Department of Education, 2019). Chronic absenteeism impacts millions of students across America each year. National data identified that approximately five to seven and a half million school-aged students miss a month or more of school each year (Chang & Davis, 2015). This qualitative interpretative phenological study (IPA) was designed to fill some of the gaps in the literature on chronic …

Exploring Factors Influencing First Generation Undergraduate College Students’ Perceived Social-Self Efficacy (Psse) And Ability To Socially Integrate With Academic Advisors, Kaycee Leigh Gnatowski

All Theses And Dissertations

Academic advisors are an integral part of the undergraduate college student experience. Primarily recognized as one of the first connections to an institution that a college student encounters, academic advisors provide students with guidance, support, resources, and mentorship throughout a student’s academic journey at the institution. Although academic advisors are found to have a profound impact on a college student’s academic and social development, persistence to degree completion, and retention rates at the institution, many undergraduate college students are unable to socially integrate with academic advisors, primarily during a student’s sophomore year of college. A student’s sophomore year of college …

Exploring The Perceptions Of Faculty And Staff Regarding The Impact A Facility Dog Has On Elementary Students’ Learning Environment, Katherine T. Race

All Theses And Dissertations

Over the past decade there has been a drastic increase in students’ reporting and exhibiting feelings of overwhelming anxiety, depression, anger, and disengagement in the school setting (Relevette, 2020). To better appreciate these increases, one must first grasp the notion that two-thirds of school-aged students are experiencing toxic-stress, also known as long-term stress, on a daily basis. Toxic stress has been directly related to the halting of brain development in children (Rossen, 2020).

These experiences, often referred to as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), are various traumatic events children have been victims of, or directly exposed to, during their first seventeen …

Weighting Admission Scores To Balance Predictiveness-Diversity: The Pareto-Optimization Approach, Filip Lievens, Paul R. Sackett, Wilfried De Corte

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Context: Although many medical schools seek to improve diversity, they grapple with the challenge of how to weight the scores of different admission methods to achieve a balance between obtaining high predictiveness and ensuring diversity in the selected student pool. Yet, in large-scale employment settings, substantial progress has been made on this front: Pareto-optimization has been introduced as an elegant statistical tool to assist decision makers in determining the weights assigned to selection methods in advance (before the selection has taken place) so that a selection system is designed to achieve an optimal balance as reflected by the trade-off that …

Measuring Alignment Between Components Of An Educational System: An Extension Of Porter’S Alignment Index, Joe Kazemi Feb 2022

Measuring Alignment Between Components Of An Educational System: An Extension Of Porter’S Alignment Index, Joe Kazemi

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

At the heart of educational systems worldwide is the idea that components of an educational system (i.e. standards, curricula, instruction, and assessments) need to be in alignment with one other for the system to produce the desired results of improving educational outcomes. Thus, a thorough and reliable methodology for measuring alignment is necessary especially given the escalating use of student assessment results as a determinant of effectiveness for districts, schools and teachers (Ananda, 2003a).

Today, there are two predominant methods for modeling and measuring that alignment: Webb’s methodology (Webb, 1997, 1999), and Porter’s methodology (Porter, 2002, 2006; McMaken & Porter …

Quantifying Traditional Public School Opposition To Charter Schools: Double Whammy From School District Staffing And Funding?, Martha Bradley-Dorsey

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

Using time series data with several OLS regressions and fixed effects models with suitable controls, I find that higher school district full-time equivalent staff counts (FTEs) are associated with lower charter share in states with Right-to-Work (RTW) laws. I find also that proportional expenditures per pupil are negatively associated with charter share in non-RTW (“union”) states. Charter schools have grown rapidly but not uniformly across states, with 2018 enrollment ranging from 0.0 to 17.1% of traditional public school enrollment. Researchers have generally focused on party, urbanicity, teacher union strength, and racial and ethnic politics to explain variations in charter enrollment. …

OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) Australia

Australian secondary school students vary widely in their academic achievement. Using the scores from the Programme for International Student Achievement (PISA) in 2018, for example, the range from the 5th to the 95th percentile of student reading scores in Australia was 359 points compared to the OECD average of 327 points (OECD, 2019a; Thomson et al., 2019). This considerable range in achievement scores has been described as reflecting a long tail in the distribution of achievement. In this paper, attention is focused on the variation in the achievement scores of 15-year-old students in Australia based on data from PISA 2018. …

How Can Assessment For Learning Be Useful For Self-Regulated Learning?: Four Approaches To Change Of Assessment Conceptions From Individualistic To Contextualistic, Kohei Nishizuka Jan 2022

How Can Assessment For Learning Be Useful For Self-Regulated Learning?: Four Approaches To Change Of Assessment Conceptions From Individualistic To Contextualistic, Kohei Nishizuka

Pedagogy and the Human Sciences

Critics argue that theoretical frameworks for assessment for learning (AfL) and self-regulated learning (SRL) are sociocultural practices reliant on others/mediating artifacts than on individual psychological operations. However, if the broader context of learning is neglected, the developmental model for fostering evaluative judgment cannot cope well with the contextual complexity of the formal and informal aspects of learning. How students perceive assessment is strongly related to their learning outcomes as it represents how much they harbor a spirit of improvement, social stress, and cooperative efficacy. Focusing on the assessment conceptions can help us reconsider the purpose and function of AfL and …

Covid-19: A Developing Crisis For Quantitative Reasoning, Nathan D. Grawe Jan 2022

Covid-19: A Developing Crisis For Quantitative Reasoning, Nathan D. Grawe

Numeracy

Assessment data show substantial learning losses resulting from pandemic-era teaching and learning. While all learning domains have been affected, mathematics performance shows particularly large losses among elementary and secondary school students. Advocates for quantitative reasoning in high schools and colleges should anticipate weaker levels of basic numeracy among entering cohorts for a decade to come. As a consequence, the urgency to reform curricula and student support has never been greater.

Three Paper Dissertation: Mooc Participation And Experiences Of Women Learners, Kinta Montilus Jan 2022

Three Paper Dissertation: Mooc Participation And Experiences Of Women Learners, Kinta Montilus

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Through three distinct investigations, this dissertation provides a unique approach to investigating the engagement of women in MOOCs. According to previous MOOC research, not only 10% of learners who enroll in the course complete it, but the majority of these students appear to be men (Christensen et al., 2013). Women's participation in MOOCs is generally low, but it varies greatly depending on whether the course is STEM or non-STEM (i.e., Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics courses—STEM). The first study examines gender participation patterns in STEM and non-STEM MOOCs using data from existing MOOC platforms. The second research study looked at …
