Uno Writing Center Program Of Excellence Report 2015-16, College Of Arts And Sciences, Writing Center

Student Support

Since 2005, the UNO Writing Center has advanced two of UNO’s key strategic goals, supporting students and promoting academic excellence. The Writing Center helps students with a wide range of writing projects and helps faculty integrate effective writing assignments into their courses. In the Fall of 2015, the Center had a staff of twenty-two, including a director, associate director, graduate assistants from the English Department, student workers, graduate consultants,interns, and a volunteer. Without additional funding, meeting demand as the UNO student body grows will be increasingly difficult, if not impossible.

In what ways are Jesuit colleges and universities working to maintain mission, identity, and traditions within the context of 21st century higher education? Those Who Quit: A Study Of Student Retention At Two-Year Community And For-Profit Colleges, Robert L. Woods

This study intends to explore factors influencing first-year student persistence at two-year community, and for-profit institutions. Much of the existing retention literature on post-secondary education has mostly centered around traditional four-year institutions, thus this study remedies the limitations with prior literature and provides insight into how to help two-year college officials better understand their students, their mission, and persistence measures at their colleges. Tinto’s Longitudinal Model of academic and social integration was systematically combined with Bean and Metzner’s retention model on non-traditional students to guide this study. During 2015-2016 the Office of STEM (OSTEM) Education at UNO has continued to move aggressively forward in undertaking and leading STEM Learning projects, many of which collaborate closely with several other UNO colleges and other formal and informal educational institutions. Also continuing into 2016, OSTEM is steadily transitioning to becoming more of a focused departmental organization, while the UNO STEM Leadership Team takes over more of the campus-wide STEM Priority efforts.

The leadership of California Community Colleges had been tasked with examining the data of English Language Learners (ELL) in urban, rural and suburban settings. This student popluation has difficulty navigating noncredit language courses that are prerequisites to college level credit courses leading to specialized certiciates and/or an associate's degree. The leaders at the community college level discovered gaps in student course completion data, students for whom English is a second language (ESL). These students sometimes do not receive support services toward successful course completion.
