Challenges Of Growing Research At New And Emerging Heis, Ellen Hazelkorn Jan 2002

Challenges Of Growing Research At New And Emerging Heis, Ellen Hazelkorn

Books/Book chapters

Newer institutions are accused of adopting the accoutrements of traditional universities, actively copying their research profile and teaching programmes, and engaging in ‘academic’ or ‘mission’ drift. For others, however, these changes are part of the natural or inevitable process of institutional development and historical change, or a further step in the democratisation of the ‘Humboltian ethic’ (Neave, 2000, p265). If massification and expansion in 1960s differentiated the second stage in higher educational development from its elite origins, then the late 1990s marked the beginning of the third stage. By then, it was clear that a broadly educated population could no …

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed in two parts: (1) to discover the graduation rates of transfer student athletes at National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II institutions in Arkansas from 1994-1997 and (2) to determine which cognitive and noncognitive variables might predict academic achievement for first semester transfer student athletes. The graduation rates were determined and analyzed by ethnicity, gender, and sports teams. Cognitive and noncognitive data were collected from a sample of 57 fall 2001 transfer student athletes. The information collected from the study group was analyzed using multiple regression and logistic regression techniques. There were five major findings of this …

Exploring Aspects Of Effectiveness Of The Department Chair In Metropolitan Universities, Kathy Cooper Trawick

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the roles and competencies of the effective department chair based on the perceptions of faculty, chairs, and deans at three selected metropolitan universities. A brief look at 54 competencies and tasks taken from eight basic categories were rank-ordered by the participants. Data were obtained via electronic survey and an Internet web site at the researcher's home institution. Seeking Community: Creating Effective Lifestyle Agreements, Steven P. Bird Jan 2002

Seeking Community: Creating Effective Lifestyle Agreements, Steven P. Bird

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Christian colleges wrestle with the creation and maintenance of regulations for correct behavior of campus members (lifestyle agreements). Using theoretical considerations as well as specific application examples, a way is presented to create a lifestyle agreement that is internally consistent and fits the needs of the campus. Specifically, the effect of external constituencies, organizational efficiency, and, most importantly, efforts to develop community, are used to guide the construction of lifestyle agreements. While very specific examples are given, no effort is made to create a one-size-fits-all set of codes. Instead, a framework is constructed to allow a campus to develop a …

Commonality & Diversity, Donna Thoennes Jan 2002

Commonality & Diversity, Donna Thoennes

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

As students are increasingly influenced by postmodern thought, which promotes ideas of community without a common center and emphasizes difference, so students may have fresh conceptualizations of what community is and how it functions. This study explored students' conceptions, experiences, and ideals of community.

The tension between commonality and diversity within community has caused much debate in the social sciences. Interviewees, who were students at member institutions of the CCCU, recognize the same tension and often struggle to navigate their relationships within a collegiate environment that promotes both.

Thirty undergraduate senior students at two Christian colleges were interviewed in February …

This article is a transcription of an address presented by Dr. David McKenna at a recent pre-conference workshop at an ACPA conference. The workshop was sponsored by ACSD in conjunction with the annual prayer breakfast. Dr. McKenna shared insights gleaned from his more than thirty years of service in Christian higher education including three presidential posts. The article focuses on two areas. They are one, what a president expects from a senior student affairs officer and two, what the SSA can expect from a president.

Student Affairs Divisions' Incorporation Of Student Learning Principles At Cccu Versus Non-Cccu Institutions, Jeff Doyle Jan 2002

Student Affairs Divisions' Incorporation Of Student Learning Principles At Cccu Versus Non-Cccu Institutions, Jeff Doyle

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

With the shift from an industry-based to a knowledge-based society, American higher education, and student affairs in particular, is under increasing pressure to prove its role in facilitating students' learning. The Student Learning Imperative (ACPA, 1994) and the Principles of Good Practice for Student Affairs (ACPA & NASPA, 1997) provided a professionally supported foundation for the new learning philosophy within student life.

The strong religious mission and the ministry model of student development in Christian higher education may affect the degree to which student-centered learning is incorporated. This study examined the extent to which chief student affairs officers at institutions …

Jewel Scarabs, David C. Hawks Jan 2002

Jewel Scarabs, David C. Hawks

University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information

Jewel Scarabs are a group of about 100 species of some of the most spectacular insects that you'll ever see! Most are various shades of iridescent green, but others are spectacular, metallic "jewels" of silver, gold, red, pink, purple, or blue. They are beetles of the family Scarabaeidae, in the subfamily Rutelinae. This subfamily is known by the common name "Shining Leaf Chafers" because many are shiny, colorful beetles that feed on leaves as adults. As a specialist in Jewel Scarabs of the genus Chrysina, I naturally consider these to be among the finest and most fascinating of insects, …

University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information

Luella Buros first set foot on the African continent in 1956 when she arrived on the shores of Mombasa, Kenya. From Mombasa, she and her husband Oscar, who had won a senior Fulbright award, trekked across southern Kenya via Land Rover to Kampala, Uganda. They resided here for the year while Oscar taught statistics at Makerere University College. When Oscar was not working, they traveled extensively around Eastern Africa. However, Buros was no ordinary traveler. She was a meticulous record-keeper and logged her trips in a journal. Buros' talents also included photography, and throughout her trips to Africa and at …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Theodore Hesburgh's Fund-Raising Speeches For The University Of Notre Dame, Peggie Mathaba Ncube Jan 2002

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Theodore Hesburgh's Fund-Raising Speeches For The University Of Notre Dame, Peggie Mathaba Ncube

Dissertations

Problem Statement. Literature reveals that college or university presidents play a key role in raising funds for their institutions. These roles are well documented, and yet many presidents face challenges in raising adequate funds for their institutions. Success stories of some university presidents are recorded, but no research has studied their rhetoric in raising funds in an attempt to uncover their formula for success. One such president is Theodore Hesburgh of the University of Notre Dame.

Methodology. This study assumes a rhetorical design, specifically the Burkean dramatistic approach to analyze Theodore Hesburgh's fund-raising speeches to the alumni of the …

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of two-year and four-year students, faculty, and chief academic officers related to articulation practices in existence. Additionally, this study was designed to determine the desired components for a successful articulation and transfer system and identify any significant differences that exist between current and ideal articulation practices.
