The Socialization Of African American Women As Faculty Members In Religiously-Affiliated Universities, Sheryl L. Mcgriff

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Research on experiences of faculty-of-color generally, and on African American women particularly, in religiously-affiliated universities is embryonic. Studying faith-based colleges as a synonymous group is a complex process because of different institutional types (e.g., 2-year, 4-year, and seminary); divergent missions; church affiliations (e.g., Lutheran, Baptist, and Roman Catholic) and Carnegie classifications (Smith & Jackson, 2004). This study’s purpose was to understand how African American women interpret and respond to their formal/informal socialization as faculty members in Jesuit universities. This project consisted of creating an online survey for student leaders on campus. The survey was open for a period of one month, and 72 students participated in the survey. This study aimed to focus on student leadership competencies in Western Michigan University (WMU) student leaders, and to qualify their experiences.

The Western and YOU Parent/Family Academy is a newly created interactive classroom experience that took place during the 2011 Orientation program. It provided an opportunity for family members to experience (or re-experience) the classroom environment. The course offered a hands-on approach in educating our families to better understand and assist students through the transition of attending college.

Education Faculty Articles and Research

The purpose of the Setting Expectations and Conflict Resolution project was to provide faculty and doctoral students with a professional development program that addressed conflict resolution using an interest-based approach. The program included two days of training focusing on setting expectations, exploring sources of conflict, and designing interventions to address conflict as it occurs. At the end of each day, participants were given a questionnaire to evaluate the usefulness of the training and its impact on their attitudes toward conflict. Focus groups were also held to assess the impact of the program. Preliminary results indicate that the program met or …

Creation Of A Custom Course Textbook For The Wmu First-Year Experience Seminar, Maleeka T. Love

Since the inception of the First-Year Seminar (FYS) course in 2005, there has been a desire to create a custom textbook. In the fall of 2009, a committee comprised of seminar faculty, staff and students began the planning process for creating a custom textbook for Western Michigan University’s First-Year Seminar. The FYS program will be fully prepared for a “full customization” textbook within the next two years.

Leg-Up: Helping Youth Apply Engineering, Tycho K. Fredericks, Steven E. Butt

Academic Leadership Academy

Leg-Up is a program that was designed to encourage youth to understand and apply math and engineering concepts they are taught in school. This program immerses middle school students in real world problem solving; it allows students to select a problem they deem important, and with the aid of mentors, determine a solution via the scientific method.

Outcomes Assessment has an image problem. For some people, it calls to mind standardized testing and centralized data collection systems. Others may think of file drawers full of unexamined reports. For many, it gets pictured alongside those other “A” words (accountability and accreditation) that they associate with satisfying someone else’s expectations. For some people, in some places, at some times, these are the kinds of images that outcomes assessment has evoked.

But these are not the only ways to see outcomes assessment, and it has never meant just those things. Outcomes assessment is first and foremost for departments: It helps …

Our focus in this article is on designing a new conceptual model for using the resources we have and generating more. We have no reason to think that a new way of financing higher education will come anytime soon, so instead we are reinventing how we operate the institution. If a new model does come along, we plan to be ready to take advantage of whatever is created.

The problem addressed in this study was to understand the knowledge gap between project management competencies available and those needed for successful implementation of technology projects at a community college. The purpose of the qualitative study was to evaluate, compare, and analyze the performance of project managers of 2 large technology projects in a specific community college with respect to each other and what was known about achieving project success at a public institution of higher education (IHE). The percentage of qualified African American senior military leaders is significantly lower than the percentage of African Americans serving in the enlisted ranks. With the changing demographics of the 21st century, increasing the number of African American Army officers is a practical as well a moral issue. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to understand African American cadets' perception of the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Leadership Program and the impact of ROTC on their lives. The theoretical basis for this study is Sternberg's theory of intelligence and Woodman, Sawyer, and Griffin's theory of organizational creativity. The …
