Almost from the inception of the student loan program in the 1960's, there has been speculation about the impact of debtload on student decisions about attending college, persisting in college, and life decisions after graduation. However, little research has been done on this area. As Congress debates funding higher education, the question arises once more of the impact of loans on college student attendance. This study examines the influence of student debtload on college persistence, for the time periods 1986-87 and 1995-96, almost an entire decade. This study examined the applicability of Kurt Lewin's Force Field Theory to the merger of Arkansas A&M College and the University of Arkansas System in 1971. The merger followed Lewin's change process: unfreezing, moving, and refreezing. This study also examined the applicability of Hugh Thompson's '21 Suggestions for a Successful Merger' as a framework for addressing the variety of issues in an institutional merger. The implications of graduate and professional student attrition are felt by many--the individual, the institution, business and industry, the education system, and society as a whole. Yet, very little research has been conducted on the factors which influence the persistence of graduate and professional students. The problem of this study was to identify the factors that influenced the decision of admitted first-time freshmen applicants to matriculate or not to matriculate at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in the fall semester of 1995. Participants were randomly selected from 793 first-time applicants. The population consisted of 529 matriculants and 264 nonmatriculants; ultimately, 52 matriculants and 26 nonmatriculants were surveyed via telephone interviews. The chi square was applied to the data. Over 50% of the nonmatriculant sample indicated that the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff was their first choice. This study analyzed the processes performed by the Officer Academic Education Repository at the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) methodology was used to define tile existing processes. IDEFO (Integrated Computer Aided Manufacturing Definition Language) and Activity Based Costing techniques were used to map the flow of activities and to determine the costs for handling one education record. The cost for processing one education record averaged approximately $69.95. This study examined the potential effects of the Defense Business Operations Fund (DBOF) policies on the graduate degree programs at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). The study examined the Defense Management Review document that provides the implementation and guidance information for DBOF, and Unit Cost. DBOF requires that organizations provide unit cost per output figures as the basis for organizational funding.
