Lessons Learned From A Training-Of-Trainers Model In Africa, Corinne Brion, Paula A. Cordeiro

The international community has pledged to provide a quality education for all by 2030. School leaders play a key role in improving student learning outcomes yet oftentimes educational leaders do not have opportunities to attend professional development events. The purpose of this study was to examine a Training of Trainers Model (TOT) used to build the capacity of school leaders in five countries in Africa. This qualitative research study used a longitudinal design. Findings revealed that there were both strengths and weaknesses to the TOT model. The authors discuss the significance of these findings for policymakers and practitioners worldwide.

Supporting Social Change: Administration Of Service-Learning In Communication Departments, Jennifer Snyder-Duch

Service-learning has garnered wide acceptance as an effective experiential pedagogy in that it combines community service with academic instruction. This pedagogy incorporates critical, reflective thinking with personal and civic responsibility and involves students in activities that address community-identified needs. Successful service learning courses develop students’ academic skills and commitment to their community (Jacoby, 2015). Some service-learning experiences focus on advocacy or social change work. These are valuable teaching and learning experiences, but as faculty develop these courses, they must be aware of the need for departmental support.

In a South Carolina school district, approximately 45% of 3rd-5th grade students performed poorly on the state mathematics test. K-5 teachers attended district training to improve mathematics instruction and content mastery, but the training omitted teachers' affective domain in teaching. Teachers' affective relationships with mathematics (ARM) affects content delivery, instructional decisions, and teachers' confidence levels and motivation. District personnel in a Mississippi urban school district identified specific curricular, instructional, and co-curricular factors that prompted students to leave school. Nontraditional students have become the majority on community college campuses; however, a national report showed that 46.2% of nontraditional students were no longer enrolled after two years. Nontraditional students have competing life roles that affect their attrition rates as well as their academic performance.
