What Do Some Of The Leading Journals And Yearbooks Tell Us About The Field?, Ed Mcluskie Apr 1984

What Do Some Of The Leading Journals And Yearbooks Tell Us About The Field?, Ed Mcluskie

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines what leading communication journals and yearbooks suggest about the field’s conceptual understanding of communication. It considers whether recent published research offers a general definition of communication or instead focuses on specialized topics without connecting them to an overall conception of the field. The article describes a content analysis of selected association publications and classifies articles as generic, partial, or outside the phenomenon of communication. It finds that most published work addresses limited areas of inquiry or methodological concerns rather than broad conceptual definitions. The article situates these findings within debates about communication research, disciplinary identity, and the …

The article reviews accepted forms of creative work, including film, television, video, scripts, audio production, computer graphics, and related production roles. It also discusses recurring challenges in documenting creative activity, identifying appropriate reviewers, judging quality, and weighing public or juried recognition. The article situates these issues within communication administration and faculty …

Evaluation Of Artistic Work For Purposes Of Faculty Reappointment, Promotion, And Tenure, Roy V. Wood Apr 1984

Evaluation Of Artistic Work For Purposes Of Faculty Reappointment, Promotion, And Tenure, Roy V. Wood

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

The article addresses faculty evaluation procedures for creative faculty, especially theatre faculty, in reappointment, promotion, and tenure decisions. Framed from an administrative perspective, it reviews criteria for teaching, disciplinary contribution, and service, while emphasizing that creative faculty should receive systematic review comparable to colleagues in more traditional scholarly fields. The discussion distinguishes classroom and campus production work from peer reviewed creative activity, then considers several ways to document artistic achievement. These include publication about creative practice, professional work beyond the university, and structured outside review of campus productions. The article situates artistic evaluation within communication administration by stressing clear standards, …

An Unacceptable Analog, Jeffrey Huberman Apr 1984

An Unacceptable Analog, Jeffrey Huberman

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Centered on theatre faculty evaluation, this article critiques a proposed analog for treating creative endeavor as equivalent to scholarship. It argues that the model is too narrow for academic theatre because it focuses mainly on directors while giving limited attention to actors, designers, and technologists. The discussion questions whether creativity should serve as the central criterion for evaluating theatre production, especially when directing may be understood as interpretive rather than primarily creative. It also examines how student performers, limited budgets, academic calendars, and campus facilities shape theatre work in higher education. Further concerns include the practicality and cost of outside …

Lepers In Academe--Arts Educators At Tenure And Promotion Time, Paul Antonie Distler Apr 1984

Lepers In Academe--Arts Educators At Tenure And Promotion Time, Paul Antonie Distler

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Written from an arts administration perspective, this article addresses strategies for presenting theatre and arts educators in tenure and promotion review. It argues that administrators must work within existing academic systems while helping colleagues outside the arts understand creative labor, professional practice, and artistic achievement. The discussion identifies three areas of preparation, including administrative acceptance and support, counseling faculty about expectations, and building persuasive dossiers. Recommended practices include sharing national arts education statements, documenting production labor, developing professional evaluations, encouraging outside artistic work, and presenting candidate materials in formats legible to reviewers from other disciplines. The article situates arts faculty …

Teaching Research Methodology And Writing In The Emerald City, Larry D. Miller Apr 1984

Teaching Research Methodology And Writing In The Emerald City, Larry D. Miller

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Using the metaphor of graduate school as an Emerald City, this article examines the teaching of research methodology and scholarly writing in speech communication graduate programs. It distinguishes undergraduate emphasis on existing knowledge from graduate emphasis on how knowledge is generated, evaluated, and shared. The discussion identifies problems in graduate instruction, including insufficient attention to research methods, unrealistic expectations for beginning students, and low expectations for master’s students as potential contributors to the discipline. It also proposes practical teaching strategies that make graduate work more closely resemble professional scholarly activity, including book reviews, manuscript evaluation, convention style presentations, and research …
