An Investigation Of Articles Produced In The Communication Discipline By Institution: A Journal By Journal, Year By Year Analysis, Vernon O. Ray, Kittie W. Watson, Larry L. Barker, Robert N. Hall
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article presents a year-by-year and journal-by-journal analysis of article production in the communication discipline from 1980 to 1985. The study builds on earlier research identifying the fifty most productive institutions and examines both the number of articles produced annually and the distribution of publications across eleven major journals. Co-authorship was accounted for by dividing credit among authors’ institutions. Results show that top-ranked institutions maintained steady levels of publication, while lower-ranked institutions fluctuated more significantly in output. The analysis highlights trends in journal preferences among institutions and considers how editorial affiliations may influence publishing patterns. Although the study focuses on …

Ethics In Educational Theatre: Who Is Tending The House?, Joe Filippo
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines ethical issues in educational theatre, distinguishing between substantial ethics, which concern the subject matter of plays, and procedural ethics, which address production practices. It considers the director’s role in balancing personal values, institutional goals, and audience expectations when selecting and staging works, noting tensions between reflecting societal values and advocating for specific perspectives. Examples highlight conflicts arising from controversial material, textual alterations, and staging choices that challenge playwright intentions. Procedural concerns such as casting policies, fairness in opportunities, and the inclusion of non-students are also explored. The discussion emphasizes that directors in academic theatre must navigate complex …

Broadcast Journalism Education: Some Implications, James E. Sayer
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines the state of broadcast journalism education in higher education, focusing on whether programs are adequately preparing students for professional careers. A survey of members of the Radio-Television News Directors Association revealed concerns about graduates’ preparation, particularly their writing skills and content knowledge. Respondents indicated that while students often possessed sufficient technical expertise, they lacked the ability to write effectively and demonstrate depth in history, political science, and economics. Recommendations included greater emphasis on writing, liberal arts study, internships, and a more realistic understanding of industry demands. The discussion contrasts academic calls for increased equipment with industry professionals’ …

An Investigation Of The Quantity Of Articles Produced In The Communication Discipline: An Institutional Analysis On The Basis Of Highest Degree Conferred, Larry L. Barker, Vernon O. Ray, Kittie W. Watson, Robert N. Hall
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article extends prior research on institutional publication productivity in the communication discipline by analyzing article output between 1980 and 1985 according to the highest degree offered by institutions. Data were collected from ten major journals, with credit assigned proportionally for multi-authored works. Results identify the most productive institutions at the doctoral, master’s, and non-graduate levels, showing that while doctoral-granting institutions produced the greatest volume, significant contributions also came from master’s programs and institutions without graduate degrees. The analysis provides comparative rankings of institutions, highlights differences in productivity across categories, and notes limitations such as the inability to assess publication …

Communication In The Socialization Of The Academic Department Chairperson, Christopher H. Spicer, Ann Q. Staton-Spicer
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines the role of communication in the socialization of new academic department chairs. While most chairs are appointed with little or no administrative training, they must quickly adapt to complex responsibilities involving leadership without extensive authority. Using intensive interviews with four newly appointed chairs, the study identifies a typology of twenty-one communication dimensions across four functional categories: informative, integrative, regulative, and innovative. These include activities such as information seeking and giving, relationship building, exercising authority, and initiating change. Findings show that communication is central to role-making as chairs negotiate expectations, establish credibility, and adapt prior faculty experience to …

This article analyzes the origins, goals, and strategies of Accuracy in Academia (AIA), a conservative organization that emerged in the mid-1980s as an outgrowth of Accuracy in Media. AIA claims to promote accuracy in higher education but has pursued tactics such as encouraging students to report on faculty, publishing alleged errors, and recruiting volunteers to monitor classes. The discussion highlights how these efforts, framed as correcting bias, often targeted liberal faculty and created controversy by pressuring universities through media exposure and alumni concerns. A case study involving Virginia Tech illustrates how AIA campaigns, though unsuccessful in altering teaching practices, generated …

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article recounts the experience of a speech communication program undergoing a duplication review by the State of Washington’s Council for Postsecondary Education. The review, aimed at identifying potentially unnecessary programs, required institutions to provide extensive data on need, demand, quality, and productivity. The program at Central Washington University, judged vulnerable due to low enrollments and degree conferrals, was recommended for termination despite evidence of quality and relevance. After appeals and hearings, the university trustees deferred closure and eventually voted to continue the program, aided by changes in state oversight agencies. The discussion provides guidance for administrators facing similar reviews, …
