A Survey Of Theatre Program Budgets, Mary Helen Brown, Deborah Ann Barker, Larry L. Barker
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article presents findings from a national survey on the budgets of college and university theatre programs, focusing on annual operating budgets and supplemental sources of income. Results show significant differences by institutional type, with universities generally receiving larger budgets than four-year and community colleges, although the latter often allocated higher proportions of funds to productions. Institutions offering terminal degrees reported the largest budgets, with some exceeding one million dollars, while those granting associate or bachelor’s degrees operated with much smaller resources. Supplemental income was most often generated through box office receipts, followed by student activity fees, individual and corporate …

The initiative sought to establish a shared instructional philosophy and foundation of courses that would equip students with essential knowledge, skills, and conceptual abilities for professional communication. The article explains the conceptual bases guiding the design, which included rhetorical theory, social cognition, and action theory, and how these perspectives were integrated into a sequence of five courses. The curriculum emphasizes progression from information processing and observation to interaction strategies, message design, …
Departmental And University Program Review, Rebecca Leonard
Departmental And University Program Review, Rebecca Leonard
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article describes the process and outcomes of a curriculum review undertaken by the Department of Speech Communication at North Carolina State University. Prompted by institutional requirements and rapid departmental growth, the review sought to balance specialization with a strong foundation in human communication theory. The process emphasized faculty involvement, student feedback, input from other university departments, and perspectives from corporate advisory board members. The resulting program retained required foundation courses and added structured concentrations in communication, mass communication, public relations, communication disorders, and theatre. Students gained clearer identity through transcripted concentrations while maintaining some flexibility in course selection. The …
The Shift From Emphasis In Public Communication In Rhetorical Studies, Waldo W. Braden
The Shift From Emphasis In Public Communication In Rhetorical Studies, Waldo W. Braden
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article critiques the expansion of rhetorical studies from a focus on public address to the broader category of public communication. It reviews how rhetorical scholarship has increasingly embraced non-traditional subjects such as films, music, literature, and popular culture, moving away from orality and the analysis of individual speeches. Drawing on a survey of recent issues of the Quarterly Journal of Speech, the discussion finds that most published work concentrated on movements, themes, or philosophical issues rather than close studies of contemporary speakers or specific texts. While acknowledging the intellectual breadth gained by this shift, the article warns that such …

Use Of Aca Evaluators In Developing A New Program, Barron A. Barron
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article discusses the use of consultants from the Association for Communication Administration in developing new academic programs. Drawing on the experience of a small liberal arts university, it outlines the process of revising a mass communication curriculum to better reflect a liberal arts orientation while preparing students for both professional entry-level positions and graduate study. The account describes how faculty sought external expertise after internal consultation proved insufficient, and how an ACA consultant provided targeted recommendations for curriculum design, faculty development, and program improvement. A Rating Of Doctoral Programs In Selected Areas Of Speech Communication: 1987–1988, Renee Edwards, Kittie Watson, Larry L. Barker
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article reports the results of a national survey evaluating doctoral programs in speech communication between 1987 and 1988. Members of two professional associations rated and ranked programs across eight content areas, including communication theory and research, interpersonal communication, organizational communication, rhetorical theory, public address, communication education, oral interpretation, and public relations. Respondents also provided overall quality assessments. Analysis showed that evaluations were most often based on familiarity with faculty, publications, and graduates, with hearsay used less frequently. Confidence in ratings was positively linked to direct knowledge of faculty, students, and research output, and negatively associated with hearsay. While findings …

Drawing on campaigns at the University of Alabama, it explains how combining direct mail with telephone follow-up significantly increased subscription sales over multiple seasons. Strategies included incentive systems, a structured three-week campaign, and techniques for handling common objections during calls. Conflict And Negotiation Courses In The Curricula, Fred E. Jandt
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article reports the results of a national survey on the presence of conflict and negotiation courses in communication curricula. Questionnaires were distributed to four-year and graduate institutions, with findings showing that over twenty percent offered at least one course in the area, and a smaller number offered two or more. Most courses were located in departments of speech or communication, were upper-division or graduate electives, and were introduced primarily in the late 1970s and 1980s. Enrollments averaged around twenty to thirty students per section, and demand was expected to grow. Faculty teaching these courses were most often tenured or …
