An in-service program for secondary teachers to increase understanding of the learning disabled student's response to learning style was developed. The in-service was organized into five 2 hour weekly sessions. The program format includes a participant agenda, and a presenter's guide with objectives and instructions for each instructional activity. Characteristics of the learning disabled student, the Dunn and Dunn applied model of student learning style, and two learning style materials development sessions were included in the in-service program.

A Handbook For Parents Of Children With Specific Learning Disabilities In The Moses Lake Schools, Merla Mae Ferguson

A handbook was designed to be used by parents of Specific Learning Disability (SLD) children in the Moses Lake School District. Using material from the literature and questions from parents of SLD children as a guide, advice and recommended activities were developed for the handbook. Parents were enthusiastic about the activities and indicated a desire for more information. It was concluded that parents using the handbook could be more effective in helping their SLD child.

The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge of administrators in higher education relative to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Particular emphasis was placed on the population of individuals labeled handicapped because of a learning disability. Given the number of students who receive federal aid and the wording of subsections 84.3(f) and 84.3(h) of the Federal Register of May 4, 1977, it is probable that all American postsecondary educational institutions are required to comply with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The purpose of this study was to design a developmental curriculum of activities for nonambulatory-multiply handicapped preschoolers, ages birth to 5 years. Visual motor, fine motor, and sensory skills were the areas specifically designed for the curriculum. A review of literature was conducted, investigating current information of curriculum for preschool nonambulatory-multiply handicapped children. Samples of curriclum from a variety of preschool project models were examined. A compilation of data resulted in a preschool curriculum for nonambulatory-multiply handicapped children.

A preschool model for 3-5 year old rural handicapped children is based on developmental skills in the areas of receptive and expressive language acquisition, fine and gross motor movement and beginning cognitive skills. Also included, to facilitate the establishment of a new rural preschool is a list of materials needed to begin the program and a list of free and low cost legal, medical, and assessment services. The need for rural preschool programs is discussed as well as reasons for growth of preschool in Washington state.

The passage of Public Law 94-142, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975, mandates that parents of a handicapped child must be included in the educational planning and placement procedures for their child. The law requires (1) parent counseling and (2) parent participation in the planning of the child’s educational career. Yet almost six years after the passage of Public Law 94-142, the role of parent which emerges today appears to be one of passive involvement in the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) process. Washington Special Education Funding Formula, Sharon L. Jenft

Financial implications of the current Washington Special Education Funding Formula for the 1980-81 school year were studied. Financial data for 229 school districts which provided education for handicapped children was collected for the study. The results showed that the majority of school districts which provide education for handicapped children did not receive funding equal to expenditures for education programs for the 1980-81 school year. Recommendations for increasing Washington's funding for handicapped education programs are discussed.

The purpose of this paper is to research students who have continuous academic problems in school. Data is collected to identify the needs and problems of these children. Solutions are presented to meet identified needs. A Demographic Study Of Emotionally Disturbed Hispanic Students Enrolled In The Public Schools Of Texas, Luis Manuel Mancha

A demographic study was made of the public schools in Texas and it was found that the majority of the emotionally disturbed students are White, non-Hispanic. At the same time, the results of the study indicated that the majority of the public schools in Texas are serving less than two percent of the total student enrollment with programs for the emotionally disturbed. Further examination indicated that overall, the public schools in Texas are failing to serve 12% of the student population with special education services. To simplify this process five brochures were prepared each to deal with a discrete step or process. There were two sets of problems which were of focal interest: (1) Did the achievement levels of the students selected come up a significant degree? (The administration wished a month's gain for a month's instruction.) (2) Did the children's personality and behavior characteristics change for the better?

Procedure

The design used was a one-group pretest-posttest design. Achievement, behavior, and personality traits were measured on the original sixteen children and in remaining ten who were still in the classes after two years.

Presented is a two-volume study of the characteristics of students identified as handicapped from educational, clinical, and psychological evaluations. The first volume describes an analysis (based on surveys collected by the National Center for Health Statistics) of the affects on identification of 14,185 6- to 17-year old students of family income, race, population size of place of residence, and geographic location. Among six primary findings reviewed are that all three types of teacher-identified handicaps (physical, mental, and speech) were significantly concentrated in the low income elementary school population, and that teachers identified both mental and speech handicaps at a significantly …

This study involved the design and investigation of a measure of adaptive behavior (Street Survival Skills Questionnaire) for the mentally retarded. Following a careful review of existing measures of adaptive behavior, a comprehensive review of research relating to prediction of independent living, and interviews with rehabilitation staff, a group of nine areas were targeted for inclusion in the instrument. On June 23, 1972, the Congress passed Title IX of the Education Amendments. Under Title IX "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance . . . ." This law affects virtually every institution of education in the country.

Elementary schools should be in compliance with Title IX this year, 1977. Secondary schools have until July 21, 1978, to fully comply.
