The Nebraska Neuropsychological Evaluation As A Predictor Of Learning Disabilities, Georgia A. Carpenter

The purpose of this study is to determine if children aged 7 to 10 with previously identified learning disabilities can be differentiated from comparably aged non-learning disabled children by means of the Nebraska Neuropsychological Evaluation (NENE). Sixty children in greater Portland, Oregon, were administered the NENE. Thirty of these children were previously identified as learning disabled, and 30 were not. Discriminant analysis was run on the subtests five separate times with varying stratified random samples from the total sample. The NENE was found to discriminate with between 60% and 80% accuracy. Quigley and Kretschmer (1982) asserted that the primary goal of education for deaf children should be literacy in English. This article presents an alternative view that there be two primary goals: (a) thinking and learning through the development of meaning-making and meaning-sharing capacities and (b) the acquisition of literacy in English. In this article, the first of these goals is viewed as the more fundamental since it facilitates the acquisition of knowledge while it simultaneously serves as the prerequisite for the acquisition of literacy in English. The reading achievement of two groups of ninth grade students with learning disabilities was compared using the standard scores on the Reading subtest of the Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT) as the pre- and posttest measurement to determine gain in reading achievement. The experimental group used only curriculum materials written in the Initial Teaching Alphabet (ITA). The control group used curriculum materials written in traditional orthography provided for students with learning disabilities by a rural Kentucky School District. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of employer attitudes on employment opportunities for persons who are visually impaired in competition with individuals who are sighted. This exploratory study analyzed the incidence and nature of barriers experienced by applicants wishing to adopt special needs children; defined as: "children who are older; have physical disabilities; are emotionally troubled; or are mentally retarded. Many are Black or Hispanic. Some are brothers and sisters who need a home together." Between mid-January and the end of June 1984; approximately 13;000 questionnaires were mailed to affiliates of the North American Council on Adoptable Children (NACAC); foster parents associations; and other groups and individuals. The effects of negative attitudes toward those labelled exceptional have been repeatedly reported in the literature. Negative attitudes toward those labelled exceptional are reported to have resulted in differential treatment toward and lowered self concepts/esteems of those with disabilities. One of the concerns in education today is bias in intelligence tests. Examiner bias and the expectancy effect is largely ignored. An unexplored variable in the research is an examinee's speech handicap and the effect it may produce in the scoring of an intelligence test.

Method

Identical responses to the Comprehension subtest of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised were audiotaped on separate cassettes by two children, one with and one with no speech handicap. Sixty-four examiners, thirty-two practicing psychologists and thirty-two graduate students of psychology, were randomly assigned to score the responses on one of the tapes. Sixteen …

This study describes the spontaneous sign language of six deaf children (6 to 16 years old) of hearing parents, who were exposed to Signed English when after the age of six they first attended a school for the deaf. Samples of their language taken at three times over a 15-month period were searched for processes and structures representative or not representative of Signed English. The nature of their developing semantics was described as the systematic acquisition of features of meaning in signs from selected lexical categories (kinship terms, negation, time expression, wh-questions, descriptive terms, and prepositions/conjunctions).

In an effort to provide the remedial spelling student with visual-tactile-kinesthetic input, a model of spelling instruction which uses calligraphic equipment and skills was devised. Results from a pretest-posttest control group design revealed supportive evidence for the model.

Educable mentally retarded (N=220) elementary and secondary students were administered Inventory of Basic Skills or the Inventory of Essential Skills (Brigance), The Peabody Individual Achievement Test (PIAT), and the Wide Range Achieve Test (WRAT). Results suggested that the Brigance measures do not replace the PIAT and WRAT. (CL)

The purpose of this field study was to develop a school effectiveness model which may be implemented at Washington Elementary School in Centralia, Illinois. In 1980 this researcher was named principal at Washington Elementary School. At the same time Centralia City Schools were entering a desegregation program which included bussing. For the first time there were more than three minority students at Washington Elementary School.
