The Translanguaging Pedagogies Continuum, Marcela Ossa Parra, Patrick Proctor
The Translanguaging Pedagogies Continuum, Marcela Ossa Parra, Patrick Proctor
Publications and Research
Translanguaging pedagogy is an approach to educational equity that harnesses multilingual learners’ communicative repertoires (e.g., home languages, non-standard varieties, gestures) by strategically incorporating them in the classroom to ensure students’ active participation and meaningful learning. This paper proposes a research-informed continuum that captures a range of possibilities for integrating translanguaging in language and literacy instruction. This continuum provides insight into how educators may make socially just instructional and curricular decisions that are based on recognizing multilingual students' languages, cultures, and ways of knowing as valuable assets in the classroom.
Role Of Morphological Awareness In Language And Literacy In Children With And Without Developmental Language Disorder, Melissa Phelan
Role Of Morphological Awareness In Language And Literacy In Children With And Without Developmental Language Disorder, Melissa Phelan
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Past research has shown phonological awareness is highly correlated with language and literacy success in children with and without Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), but a less examined area of language and literacy is morphological awareness. Delayed morphology in children with DLD has been studied extensively in spoken language, but relatively little in written language in the DLD population. This study explored two research questions: 1) Is morphological awareness related to language and literacy success in children with and without DLD, and 2) Is morphological awareness impaired for those children with DLD and dyslexia similarly to that of phonological awareness. A …
Increasing Oral Reading Fluency Rate Of Middle School Students With Learning Disabilities Through Cooperative Learning, Kristin Stuffick
Increasing Oral Reading Fluency Rate Of Middle School Students With Learning Disabilities Through Cooperative Learning, Kristin Stuffick
Student Research Poster Presentations 2022
This study highlights the importance of focusing on student motivation and engagement to encourage an optimistic school and future education viewpoint. Student interest can be maintained by promoting student choice in their reading materials to align with individual interests and increase comprehension retention. The long-term implications of reading difficulties can affect individuals after middle school by lessening their chances of earning a high school diploma, leading to decreased annual income and increased reliance on government assistance throughout their lifetime.
First Year Teachers’ Perspectives Of Their Self-Efficacy To Teach Writing In Elementary, Angelica Felicia Givler
First Year Teachers’ Perspectives Of Their Self-Efficacy To Teach Writing In Elementary, Angelica Felicia Givler
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractWith the introduction of Common Core State Standards in 2009, there has been an increase in the expectations for writing instruction in the United States. Writing instruction standards are now part of language arts and other content areas, but many teachers feel unprepared to teach writing. There is limited research on teachers’ perspectives of their abilities to teach writing upon completion of a teacher preparation program. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to examine teachers’ perspectives of their ability to teach writing in elementary school and identify coursework they deem useful for enhancing their abilities to teach writing. …
Literacy Score Gains In Grades K-2 In A Response To Intervention Program, Diana Dawn Thill
Literacy Score Gains In Grades K-2 In A Response To Intervention Program, Diana Dawn Thill
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Fewer than half of students demonstrated proficiency on Michigan state-administered summative assessments at the end of third grade at a rural, Title I school in Michigan. The purpose of this quantitative study was to compare reading fluency gains between grade levels (i.e., kindergarten, first, and second grades) in an effort to better understand which grade level demonstrates the most growth. The framework for this research study was the constructs of the variability of learning disabilities. Using a sample of 260 cases, this ex post facto pre-post quantitative study investigated the measurable fluency gains between grade levels in the Dynamic Indicators …

The Overcoming Disadvantage In Early Childhood Study: Evaluation Of The Australian Literacy And Numeracy Foundation’S Early Language And Literacy Program. Final Report, Dan Cloney, Kellie Picker, David Jeffries, Prue Anderson
Early Childhood Education
The Overcoming Disadvantage in Early Childhood (ODEC) study is a longitudinal evaluation of the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation’s (ALNF) Early Language and Literacy (EL&L) program. The study was designed to answer the research question: What is the effect of the EL&L program on the development of language and literacy skills in preschool aged children? An integral component of this study was to develop a new measure of oral language and literacy - the Early Language and Literacy Developmental Index (ELLDI). The ELLDI was developed in recognition of the need for a best practice measure of oral language and literacy …
Middle School Teachers’ Experiences Using Internet-Based Technology In Literacy Instruction, Shelly Butler
Middle School Teachers’ Experiences Using Internet-Based Technology In Literacy Instruction, Shelly Butler
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractResearchers found that the integration of internet technology into K–12 classrooms can improve student outcomes. Self-reported statements from 15 teachers and district survey results at the local setting, a rural school in a Southern state, indicated that sixth- through eighth-grade English Language Arts (ELA) teachers were not making effective use of research-supported internet resources in literacy instruction and assessment, and it is not known why. The purpose of this explanatory, qualitative case study, which included Knowles’s theory of adult learning as a framework, was to understand how ELA teachers were using internet resources in literacy instruction. The research questions were …

Third Grade Arabic And English Dual Language Learners’ Literacy Achievement Associated With The Scott Foresman Reading Street Program, Katina Latrice Walton
Third Grade Arabic And English Dual Language Learners’ Literacy Achievement Associated With The Scott Foresman Reading Street Program, Katina Latrice Walton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The academic success of dual language learners (DLLs) has been studied extensively, but few studies have investigated the effectiveness of the Scott Foresman Reading Street (SFRS) program on DLL struggling readers. The purpose of this quantitative study, grounded in the linguistic interdependence theory, was to compare the Measure of Academic Progress Reading Fluency (MAP RF) Rasch Unit (RIT) scores of third grade DLL struggling readers before and after they participated in 1 year of the SFRS program at Commonwealth School in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The RIT scores measure students’ progress between grades. A repeated-measures t test was used to examine …
Examining Urban Teachers' Perceptions And Practices Of Family Literacy Partnerships In Schools, Homes, And Communities: A Case Study, Andrea M. Dailey
Examining Urban Teachers' Perceptions And Practices Of Family Literacy Partnerships In Schools, Homes, And Communities: A Case Study, Andrea M. Dailey
All ETDs from UAB
This qualitative case study examined urban teachers' perceptions and experiences of family literacy practices and partnerships in urban schools, homes, and communities during remote learning. Research shows that collaboration among schools, families, and communities can help improve overall educational outcomes and literacy development of children from linguistic and low socioeconomic backgrounds (Curry et al., 2016; Henderson & Mapp, 2002; Taylor, 1989). However, there is limited research on family literacy practices and partnerships in urban settings during remote learning. Therefore, this research explores family literacy practices and partnerships between schools, families, and communities in urban environments to help improve students' literacy …
The Traveling Memories Project: A Digital Collection Of Lived Experiences Of Teachers Who Served In The 1961 Cuban Literacy Campaign, Kimberly Waller
The Traveling Memories Project: A Digital Collection Of Lived Experiences Of Teachers Who Served In The 1961 Cuban Literacy Campaign, Kimberly Waller
Antioch University Full-Text Dissertations & Theses
The 1961 Campaña de la Alfabetización (CLC) [Cuban Literacy Campaign] looms large in the Cuban historical imagination as a moment of transformation, sacrifice, and triumph. Yet, until recently, the unique aspects of the CLC that made it a national success were in danger of being forgotten, thus losing its potential as a model for future ways to mobilize a nation toward an important social goal. The primary objectives of this project were to: (1) expand the scope of the discourse to include a much larger range of lived experiences; (2) collect and preserve lived experiences as shared by the teachers …

Linguistic Awareness And Dyslexia Beliefs Among Teachers Of Students Who Are Blind Or Visually Impaired., Nosheen Gul, Lindsay N. Harris, Alicia Larouech, Gracie Strohm
CISLL Publications
US students who are blind or have visual impairments do not read at the level of a third-grader with typical sight until, on average, halfway through the seventh grade. As a first step toward narrowing that gap, we investigated levels of linguistic awareness among teachers of students who are blind or visually impaired (TSBVIs) because research with general education teachers has demonstrated a link between teacher linguistic awareness and student literacy outcomes. We also examined the accuracy of dyslexia beliefs among TSBVIs and whether TSBVI linguistic aware- ness and dyslexia beliefs are associated with training and experience variables. A survey …

International Education Research
In 2020, with the COVID-19 pandemic spreading across Indonesia and around the world, INOVASI (the Innovation for Indonesia’s School Children) and the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (MoECRT) initiated a study of foundational literacy and numeracy learning by Indonesian students and the impact of the pandemic on this learning. The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) provided technical support. The study developed descriptions of literacy and numeracy achievement levels, referencing both global proficiency frameworks and Indonesia’s curriculum and assessment standards. Student results were benchmarked against descriptors of skills for the Global Proficiency Framework (GPF) Minimum Proficiency Levels …
Envisioning Equitable Access To Secondary Literacy Learning Through Sociocultural And Critical Approaches To The Implementation Of Multitiered Systems Of Supports, Audrey Flynn Richardson
Envisioning Equitable Access To Secondary Literacy Learning Through Sociocultural And Critical Approaches To The Implementation Of Multitiered Systems Of Supports, Audrey Flynn Richardson
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
ABSTRACT
The acquisition and operationalization of literacy are of critical importance to all learners. The use of literacy and language abilities including reading and writing as well as critical thinking and communication are essential to accessing one’s human and civil rights (Goodwin & Jiménez, 2019). Because the acquisition of these skills and abilities does not always happen with automaticity or in the same way for all students, public schools are asked to provide layers of comprehensive support for students in their literacy learning. Since the reinstatement of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 2004, state and federal educational …
