A Sense Of Direction In Criterion-Referenced Assessment, Geoff Masters, John Evans Dec 1985

A Sense Of Direction In Criterion-Referenced Assessment, Geoff Masters, John Evans

Prof Geoff Masters AO

This paper describes some experimental work undertaken by the authors with teachers in a number of Australian schools to provide criterion-referenced assessments of student achievement. In these investigations we work closely with individual teachers using assessment materials developed within each school. We analyze students' performances on these materials, provide teachers with computergenerated reports, and assist teachers to use these reports to monitor the progress of their students and to diagnose individual strengths and weaknesses.

A Comparison Of Latent Trait And Latent Class Analyses Of Likert-Type Data, Geoff Masters Dec 1984

A Comparison Of Latent Trait And Latent Class Analyses Of Likert-Type Data, Geoff Masters

Prof Geoff Masters AO

This paper brings together and compares two developments in the analysis of Likert attitude scales. The first is the generalization of latent class models to ordered response categories. The second is the introduction of latent trait models with multiplicative parameter structures for the analysis of rating scales. Key similarities and differences between these two methods are described and illustrated by applying a latent trait model and a latent class model to the analysis of a set of 'life satisfaction' data. The way in which the latent trait model defines a unit of measurement, takes into account the order of the …

All Master's Theses

Preparation and certification of school principals at Central Washington University have developed according to the requirements of the Washington State Standards. This study determined the real and estimated costs for the development, implementation, and operation of the competency-based, principal preparation program. A questionnaire elicited data from participants and revealed that professional time devoted to the project incurred the greatest costs. The developmental period was determined to be the most expensive phase. An instrument for future data collection was devised and recommended.

Research outputs pre 2011

An opinion questionnaire (see Appendix One for details) was distributed to staff of the Departments of Education Studies and English Studies to identify expectations of staff in relation to teaching practice and to measure the extent to which staff views on the subject coincide. Use was made of the Delphi technique to enable respondents to modify and expand on the original questionnaire and to revise their initial responses in the light of additional information. It was felt that the Delphi technique would permit more detailed and reflective views to be obtained from staff and that this additional information would justify …

Report On Supplementary Esl Reading Course, David B. Hopkins

MA TESOL Collection

The ESL Reading course described in this report was conducted for Latin American scholarship students during the summer of 1973 at the School for International Training. Since it was intended to be a supplement to the regular classes of these students, every effort was made to allow the course direction to develop according to the needs of the participants. Although the original thrust of the program was to focus upon reading attitudes, utilizing the reading interests of the students, a parallel focus on reading skills evolved. I believe that the program achieved some success by offering both the satisfaction of …

The Effects Of Systematic Phonics And Contingency Management On Reading Achievement With Intermediate Special Education Students, Allena Marie Hayes Combelic Jan 1972

The Effects Of Systematic Phonics And Contingency Management On Reading Achievement With Intermediate Special Education Students, Allena Marie Hayes Combelic

All Master's Theses

This paper presents a study of the effects of systematic phonics and contingency management on reading achievement with intermediate special education students. The thirtysix week program was divided into four phases. The four equivalent forms of the Gray Oral Reading Tests were used as measuring devices. No statistically significant results were found by using the Gray Oral Reading Tests as measuring devices. Statistically significant results were found on graph data.

Recommendations included: (1) the use of different reading tests other than the Gray Oral Reading Tests as measuring devices and (2) that the study be conducted longer than thirty-six weeks.

Improving Reading Skills, Patricia L. Greene Jan 1972

Improving Reading Skills, Patricia L. Greene

Honors Theses

This study was undertaken as an aid for improving basic reading skills through the use of the Reading Lab instructed by Mrs. L. Durkee. This was thus a developmental project in reading.

Specifically stated the purposes of this study were: (1) to increase reading rate; (2) to increase the use of words through vocabulary building; and (3) to improve reading comprehension.

The approach here is one of practicality rather than theoretical. The course of study was therefore geared from the particular deficiencies of the student to improve reading skills. This afforded flexibility on the parts of the instructor and the …

Relationship Of Convergent And Divergent Teaching To Creative Performance, Robert Bruce Kibler Aug 1971

Relationship Of Convergent And Divergent Teaching To Creative Performance, Robert Bruce Kibler

All Master's Theses

This study investigated the effect on test scores on the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking. Form A, resulting from convergent and divergent methods of teaching fifteen half-hour mini-lessons in social studies to fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. Results favored the Divergent Group, and their scores were more widely dispersed. Recommendations included a follow-up study, replication of the experiment with variations in the sample and treatments, and investigation of the possible utility of a two-score achievement test.
