Therapeutic Interventions That Increase Engagement For Students With Autism, Rachel B. Berndt

Students with autism require unique programming to increase engagement in the classroom setting. This literature review is a collection of research-based studies involving animal assisted interventions, music therapy, art therapy, speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy. The results of these studies suggest that when provided the therapeutic interventions listed above, students with autism increase engagement in the classroom due to the expansion of language and social communication skills and the decrease of maladaptive behaviors. Given purposeful and collaborative therapeutic interventions, students learn how to problem solve, collaborate, and communicate with adults and peers. Sensory processing challenges are addressed …

This literature review examined various aspects of co-teaching math in inclusive classrooms. Research has shown varying results on the effects of student achievement for general education students and students with special needs in co-taught math classes. School-based differences may have an effect on these outcomes and should be examined further. Continued efforts to provide students with special needs the least restrictive environment for learning, ongoing co-planning, co-assessing, and reflection are key components for a successful co-teaching pair. This literature review examined the transition skill development of students with disabilities through high school, school-to-work experiences. Students are graduating from high school at ever-increasing levels of under-preparedness for the world they are entering, whether it is employment or postsecondary education. School-to-work programs are one way to support youth in their preparation toward leaving school and transitioning into adulthood. In addition, students with a disability have higher rates of unemployment than their non-disabled peers, indicating that they are leaving school less employable. Phillips, et al. Students identified with low-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), in center-based programs, have minimal opportunities for inclusion in the general education setting and are often emotionally and socially excluded from their peers. Peer-mediated instruction (PMI) is a social skills intervention that trains neurotypical peers to be peer buddies for students with ASD. Research highlights PMI as an evidenced-based practice that increases social communication skills in students with ASD and develops empathy, patience, tolerance, and other character traits for neurotypical peers.
