A Phenomenological Study Of Highly Achieving Elementary School Students Despite Lack Of Parental Involvement, John Ralph Mckinley
A Phenomenological Study Of Highly Achieving Elementary School Students Despite Lack Of Parental Involvement, John Ralph Mckinley
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to discover how certain students achieved academic success despite the lack of parental involvement. Eight students in grades 4-6 at Riverton Elementary School were selected for the study. The name Riverton Elementary School is a pseudonym. Pseudonyms were used in this study for the name and location of the school and also used for the names of students, teachers, and parents. This study asked what is it about highly achieving students' culture which makes them achieve at high levels despite the lack of parental involvement? What habits do these highly achieving students possess? …
Boys, Writing, And The Literacy Gender Gap: What We Know, What We Think We Know, Nancy Disenhaus
Boys, Writing, And The Literacy Gender Gap: What We Know, What We Think We Know, Nancy Disenhaus
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
The existence of a persistent gender gap in literacy achievement, and particularly in writing, is not in dispute: boys trail girls in every assessment at state, national, and international levels. Yet although this basic fact is not in dispute, nearly everything else concerning the gender gap in literacy achievement--its causes, consequences, and potential solutions--remains hotly contested, particularly in the public and professional discourse. Scholarly research offers insights that frequently challenge the prevailing public discourse, but this research has been conducted primarily in the U.K., Australia, and Canada, leaving the experiences of U.S. students largely unexplored. Herein lies the problem: an …

The First Day Of School Sets The Tone For Academic Achievement, Cathrine Marguerite Neilsen-Hewett
The First Day Of School Sets The Tone For Academic Achievement, Cathrine Marguerite Neilsen-Hewett
Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)
There are many transitions in life (starting school, moving house, changing jobs) and how well we cope depends largely on our perceptions of the event as well as the level of support we receive. The transition to school is a particularly significant time, heralding a new stage in a child's life. Whether your child is feeling slightly anxious about starting school or bursting with excitement, all children (and parents!) benefit from a bit of planning and preparation in order to ensure the transition to school goes as smoothly as possible. There is consistent evidence to show early positive school experiences …
The Effects Of Differentiated Instruction On The Achievement Scores Of Struggling Fourth Grade Readers, Carol Elaine Boges
The Effects Of Differentiated Instruction On The Achievement Scores Of Struggling Fourth Grade Readers, Carol Elaine Boges
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Identifying an effective instructional strategy to remediate struggling readers is a goal for educators. Differentiated instruction (DI) has received much attention as a possible strategy to rectify literacy problems, but quantitative research on its effectiveness is limited. This quantitative study used a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent, pretest-posttest design to determine if DI provided a significant difference in reading comprehension scores between struggling readers instructed with DI strategies and students instructed with whole group strategies. Philosophies grounded in cognitive constructivism constituted the theoretical framework for this study which examined the archival STAR reading assessment pre- and posttest instructional reading level scores of 120 …
A Study On Preferred Learning Styles Of Turkish Efl Teacher Trainees, Sevim Inal, Oya Büyükyavuz, Mustafa Tekin
A Study On Preferred Learning Styles Of Turkish Efl Teacher Trainees, Sevim Inal, Oya Büyükyavuz, Mustafa Tekin
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Since people have different ways of perception, levels of motivation, and attitudes towards teaching and learning they consistently differ from each other in their preferences of learning and acquiring knowledge. Therefore, the more instructors understand the differences, the better chance they have of understanding and meeting the diverse learning needs of their students. The present study has been conducted to investigate the Turkish ELT students’ learning style preferences in relation to gender and age to see if there is any relationship between achievement and learning style preferences. To perform the aim of the study Wintergerst and DeCapua’s (1999) learning style …
Rethinking School Improvement: The Case For Networked Improvement Communities, Jesse Senechal
Rethinking School Improvement: The Case For Networked Improvement Communities, Jesse Senechal
MERC Publications
The question of why school improvement efforts have not been as effective as we would hope is a complicated one that could be addressed from a number of perspectives. The purpose of this paper is to explore some of the underlying problems that prevent current school reform effort from achieving sustained impact, and to describe a promising model of school improvement, called the Networked Improvement Community (NIC). The NIC model – which has just started gaining traction in the world of K-12 school reform – establishes small inquiry groups within organizations to engage in cycles of improvement that involve implementing …
An Investigation Of The Effect Of Single-Gendered Instruction On Achievement In Math And English In An Urban High School, Beverly Bacchus
An Investigation Of The Effect Of Single-Gendered Instruction On Achievement In Math And English In An Urban High School, Beverly Bacchus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since the inception of the No Child Left Behind Act, many initiatives have been implemented to increase academic achievement. Single-gender education is an initiative that public schools have adopted with the hope of seeing boys and girls achieve significant gains in their core classes. This study explored the achievement levels of 9th grade girls and boys in their English I and Algebra I classes. After a year of learning in single-gender classes, the students' end of course scores were compared to the previous cohort of students who were taught in a traditional co-educational format by using an independent t-test. Scores …
How Does Executive Function Skills Instruction Impact Student Executive Function Levels And Academic Achievement On Comcore State Standards Assessments?, Donna Akers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Executive function skills are vitally important to student success in school and later in life. Executive function skills can and are improved with specific skills instruction. The literature reveals a correlation between executive function and academic achievement. So, the theory proposed is that raising executive function levels will raise achievement levels. The role of executive function in student achievement in the ComCore State Standards was studied with a fourth grade class. It was conducted over a nine-week period, and used an experimental and control group. Both groups were given an executive function pretest and academic achievement (ComCore) pretest. During the …

Monitoring Trends in Educational Growth (MTEG)
This publication provides a summary of initial findings of the Monitoring Trends in Educational Growth (MTEG) study in Afghanistan. Class 6 students in 13 provinces in Afghanistan were assessed in the domains of mathematical, reading and writing literacy. In total, 5,979 students, 42% girls and 58% boys, took the test and completed a student background questionnaire in either Dari or Pashto. The principal from each assessed school also completed a school background questionnaire. The initial results on gender differences show some promising outcomes as well as highlighting areas that require attention. The results of MTEG 2013 Class 6 indicate that …
The Relationship Between Middle School Configurations And Student Success, Asia Ali-Hawkins
The Relationship Between Middle School Configurations And Student Success, Asia Ali-Hawkins
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Public schools have used varying school configurations for middle grades-typically K-8 or traditional middle school arrangements-to improve students' academic outcomes. A small Northeastern school district was experiencing problems with student achievement, suspensions, and truancy, and was considering school configuration as a potential method of improving student performance. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the associations between school configuration and student achievement, suspensions, and truancy. Erikson's psychosocial theory of development and Dickinson's middle school philosophy guided this study since both address the needs of adolescents. Five years of archival data were collected from 2 demographically comparable Northeast school …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
There has been a multitude of research about the effect of vocabulary instruction on reading achievement. The purpose of this study was to further examine the effectiveness of specific methods of vocabulary instruction, definitional and morphemic, as measured by reading achievement on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment. This research study focused on 5 suburban classrooms in the Midwest, three teaching definitional methods and two teaching morphemic methods. The data were analyzed using a 2X 2 ANOVA to determine which method had the most effect on reading achievement, definitional or morphemic. The analyses revealed that there is a significant …
