An Analysis Of Trauma Narratives Perceptions Of Children On The Experience Of Sexual Abuse, Jennifer Marie Foster Jan 2011

An Analysis Of Trauma Narratives Perceptions Of Children On The Experience Of Sexual Abuse, Jennifer Marie Foster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is estimated to affect 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys before the age of 18 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2005). Despite the prevalence of sexual abuse and frequent negative outcomes for child victims as well as adult survivors, little is known about CSA from the perspective of the child. To date, the vast majority of research has targeted adults. Studies conducted on children are mostly quantitative and have explored the effectiveness of various treatment interventions. To address the gap in the research literature, the present study investigated the perspectives of children …

Predicting Client Outcomes Using Counselor Trainee Levels Of Ego Development And Altruistic Caring, Tracy S. Hutchinson Jan 2011

Predicting Client Outcomes Using Counselor Trainee Levels Of Ego Development And Altruistic Caring, Tracy S. Hutchinson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research suggests that counselor educators continue to debate whether general personality characteristics, relationship building skills, or other knowledge or skills are important in selecting the most effective counselors (Crews et al., 2005). Further, counselor educators continue to rely on measures that have limited ability to predict counseling competence or success in graduate programs. Such measures include GRE and GPA scores along with heavy reliance on the personal interview that is well-known for bias. Moreover, research supports that there is a need for assessments that will assist in determining the most effective counselors and emphasize the importance of measuring those characteristics …

In The Process Of Becoming The Organizational Culture Of The Metropolitan Academic Library, Michael Jason Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organizational culture may be defined as the shared norms, values, and beliefs of an organization. The culture expresses itself through symbols and sagas. Organizational culture shapes the behavior of those within the organization and provides a lens through which its members can interpret reality. This study sought to define the organizational culture of the Metropolitan Academic Library. The study was guided by Schein‘s five levels of cultural assumptions: assumptions about external adaptation issues; assumptions about internal integration; assumptions about the nature of truth and reality; assumptions about the nature of time and space; and assumptions about human nature, activity, and …

Teaching Reading In The Secondary Content Area Classroom:Teacher Attitudes And Predictors, Sara L. Norton-Ejnik

Dissertations

Strategic teaching of reading occurs at the elementary level, and students are expected to "read to learn" once they enter high school. The majority of the nation's secondary students do not have all the requisite skills to read and learn from high school texts and materials, and even drop-out rates have been attributed to students' inability to keep pace with the literacy skills demanded by the secondary curriculum. No Child Left Behind legislation now mandates secondary school reading initiatives, from high stakes testing to remediation. Despite the national focus on secondary reading, teachers in America's secondary schools are not teaching …

Taking Note, Sadie Rawlinson

The Utah English Journal

“Modeling” is another way of saying “Be a good example”—only you do it with purpose. One of the earliest forms of modeling in my classroom was when I was desperately trying to get my ninth-graders to read during their Teacher Advisory (TA) class on Fridays when we had DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time. I tried everything from threats to bribes to apathy.
