Federal Research And Development Agenda For Net-Zero Energy, High-Performance Green Buildings, National Science And Technology Council Oct 2008

Federal Research And Development Agenda For Net-Zero Energy, High-Performance Green Buildings, National Science And Technology Council

Office of Research and Economic Development: Publications

The construction and buildings sector consumes enormous amounts of energy, clean water, and materials. Buildings use about one-third of the world’s energy — a proportion that will continue to increase as the population grows and becomes more urban and more affluent (Griffith et al. 2007). In the United States today, the buildings sector accounts for 40% of the primary energy use, compared to 32% for the industrial sector and 28% for the transportation sector. The use of electric power and heat in the buildings sector also accounts for about 40% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). If current trends continue, …

Convergent Validity Of The Early Childhood Behavior Problem Screening Scale  , Annette Griffith, J. Ron Nelson, Michael Epstein, Bjorn Pederson

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

This study examined the convergent validity of the parent and teacher versions of the Early Childhood Behavior Problem Screening Scale (ECBPSS) with the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the Caregiver-Teacher Report Form (C-TRF), respectively. Data were collected on a sample of preschool and kindergarten students (n = 149) from two medium-sized cities in the Midwest. Analyses of both the parent and teacher versions of the ECBPSS were corre¬lated with the corresponding Internalizing, Externalizing, and Total Problem scale scores of the CBCL and the C-TRF. The present findings and future research directions and limitations are discussed.

Faculty Training In Developing An E-Portfolio System, Cindy J. Harvel

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In fall semester, 2007 research was performed at Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) to determine which means of training for the Chalk and Wire e-Portfolio system was most satisfying to faculty and cooperating teachers. A fifteen question survey was given to 171 assessors. Fourteen questions gathered quantitative data, one qualitative. Four cross tabulations completed with a chi square test for independence showed that faculty and cooperating teachers ratings of their success using Chalk and Wire was independent of: (a) comfort level with computers, (b) age of assessor, (c) assessors’ satisfaction with student assistant, and (d) assessors' rating of administrators' helpfulness. …

Standards Vs. 'Standard' Knowledge, Edmund T. Hamann Jul 2008

Standards Vs. 'Standard' Knowledge, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This chapter (one of 40 in the book "Everyday Antiracism", edited by Mica Pollock) matches the format of other entries in the book by providing direct, research-grounded advice for ways of reducing racism in American schools and reducing its damage for students. This chapter focuses on the de facto recognized skills of two English learners (ELLs) who were kept in an intermediate class because of their teacher's need to have their assistance as interpreters, but highlights how this linguistic competence actually de jure counted against these learners making their progress appear slower than it was.

Escuelas Nacionales, Alumnos Transnacionales: La Migración México/Estados Unidos Como Fenómeno Escolar, Víctor A. Zúñiga, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Women’s approaches to leadership have been distinctly different from men’s. Through women’s stories and women’s lives, we can discover unique and fresh insights about leadership critical for the rapidly changing world. Deans of nursing programs are predominately women. Nursing deans are in key positions to influence both the direction of the schools and the profession itself.

The purpose of this historical study was to describe and analyze the life of Patricia Morin, a nursing dean. The study focused on the meanings of these experiences as well as her role in academic leadership as she perceived and lived it.

The major …

The Relationship Between The Curriculum, Instruction, And Assessment Provided By Wyoming High School Mathematics Teachers And The Performance Of Wyoming 11th Grade Students On The Adequate Yearly Progress Of Wyoming Schools, Mary C. Moler

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This research study investigated the mathematics teachers’ classroom practices in curriculum, instruction, and assessments by a self-reporting questionnaire. The questionnaire was sent to all 295 Wyoming high school mathematics teachers in February of 2007. There were 164 questionnaires completed by 67 out of the 75 schools contacted.

It also investigated how those practices related to the mathematics portion of school’s Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) on state standards with the federally mandated No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The researcher calculated scaled average scores on 13 variables related to a 32-question questionnaire. The groups analyzed were sorted into three levels …

A Theory Of Non-Noetherian Gorenstein Rings, Livia M. Miller Jul 2008

A Theory Of Non-Noetherian Gorenstein Rings, Livia M. Miller

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In Noetherian rings there is a hierarchy among regular, Gorenstein and Cohen-Macaulay rings. Regular non-Noetherian rings were originally defined by Bertin in 1971. In 2007, Hamilton and Marley used Cech cohomology to introduce a theory of Cohen-Macaulay for non-Noetherian rings, answering a question posed by Glaz. This dissertation provides a theory of non-Noetherian Gorenstein rings agreeing with the Noetherian definition, and for which regular rings are Gorenstein, and coherent Gorenstein rings are Cohen-Macaulay. The relationship between Gorenstein rings and FP-injective dimension as defined by Stenstrom is also explored. Finally, an additional characterization of Gorenstein rings involving homological dimensions is examined …

First Things First: Writing Strategies -- Move Close To The Action, Marilyn L. Grady

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Some individuals seem to have an endless array of research and writing ideas; other individuals seem to have few research and writing ideas. For many, finding a way to prime the writing pump is a cause of concern. A frequently heard comment is, "I don't know how to get started." One way to discover writing opportunities is to expand your network. Conferences provide opportunities to meet many individuals from many places. These individuals are sources of research and writing ideas. The conference sessions are replete with writing ideas. The conference bulletin boards, materials tables, and program provide research and writing …

The Finish Line: Doctoral Students And The Great Race, Marilyn L. Grady Jul 2008

The Finish Line: Doctoral Students And The Great Race, Marilyn L. Grady

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

A book by A. J. Cronin was the source of my career inspiration. Cronin wrote novels set in the life of the university. The university and the work of the professor became my career ambition. It took a number of years to achieve my goal of being a university professor. Today, a major portion of my university work is advising doctoral students. The national data on completion of doctoral programs are grim. I, like many of my colleagues, strive to assist students in completing their doctoral studies. However, despite my efforts to facilitate their studies, I am constantly reminded that …

When Sisterly Support Changes To Sabotage, Barbara L. Brock Jul 2008

When Sisterly Support Changes To Sabotage, Barbara L. Brock

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Although research on women's leadership extols the benefits of women's professional collaborations and mentorship, one cannot assume that all women are trustworthy and supportive of other women. This qualitative study explored the phenomenon of professional sabotage among women in educational leadership. Results revealed that, although women who engaged in sabotage were proportionately few in number, the damage they inflicted on other women's reputations, careers, and emotional well-being was great. "Cross a man and you struggle, one of you wins, you adjust and go on- or you lie there dead. Cross a woman and the universe is changed, once again, for …

Women In History - Abigail Adams: Life, Accomplishments, And Ideas, Sharon K. Kenan Jul 2008

Women In History - Abigail Adams: Life, Accomplishments, And Ideas, Sharon K. Kenan

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Abigail Adams's fame derives in large part from her marriage to the second President of the United States, John Adams (Freidel, 1989). However, she also had attributes of her own that made her an interesting and perennially famous woman in the history of the United States. One of her most enduring legacies is the volume of correspondence she wrote during lonely separations from her husband while he handled the nation's business and left her alone with four children. Firsthand accounts of the period leading up to, during, and following the American Revolution are available through those letters (Withey, 1981). Eventually …

Using Non-Traditional Activities To Enhance Mathematical Connections, Sandy Dean Jul 2008

Using Non-Traditional Activities To Enhance Mathematical Connections, Sandy Dean

Action Research Projects

In this action research study of my classroom of seventh grade mathematics, I investigated the use of non-traditional activities to enhance mathematical connections. The types of nontraditional activities used were hands-on activities, written explanations, and oral communication that required students to apply a new mathematical concept to either prior knowledge or a realworld application. I discovered that the use of non-traditional activities helped me reach a variety of learners in my classroom. These activities also increased my students’ abilities to apply their mathematical knowledge to different applications. Having students explain their reasoning during non-traditional activities improved their communications skills, both …

Can Homework Become More Meaningful With The Inclusion Of Oral Presentations?, Emy Jones

Action Research Projects

In this action research study of my 7th grade math class, I investigated the inclusion of homework presentations to see if they would improve students’ attitude toward mathematics, participation, and understanding. I discovered that although the implementations of presentations into our homework routine did not drastically influence grades, or even improve attitudes (according to test grades and student surveys), a multitude of other changes surfaced. These changes consisted of an increase in discussion, a team effort among students in my class, and an overall “learning community” effect. I plan to continue to pursue presentations as a major part of my …

Enhancing Thinking Skills: Will Daily Problem Solving Activities Help?, Julie Hoaglund

Action Research Projects

In this action research study of my classroom of eighth grade general mathematics students, I investigated how addressing problem solving activities each day would affect the thinking and reasoning skills of the students. I discovered that the students became more adept at problem solving as they practiced various strategies. As students justified their answers, both orally and in written form, their understanding of mathematics and its applications to the real world improved. I discovered that students worked more diligently on problems of interest to them. Also, some problems are better solved individually, and some are more geared as a group …

Summarization In Math Class, Scott Eckman Jul 2008

Summarization In Math Class, Scott Eckman

Departament of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Master's of Arts in Teaching, Summative Projects

This action research study of twenty students in my sixth grade mathematics classroom examines the implementation of summarization strategies. Students were taught how to summarize concepts and how to explain their thinking in different ways to the teacher and their peers. Through analysis of students’ summaries of concepts from lessons that I taught, tests scores, and student journals and interviews, I discovered that summarizing mathematical concepts offers students an engaging opportunity to better understand those concepts and render that understanding more visible to the teacher. This analysis suggests that non-traditional summarization, such as verbal and written strategies, and strategies involving …
