Assessment Of Omega-3 Fatty Acid Food Intakes And Their Association With Socioeconomic Status And Acculturation In Midwestern Latinas, Karina R. Lora

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of a culturally appropriate food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to measure total omega-3 (n-3) fatty acid, ALA, EPA and DHA intakes of Midwestern Latinas. In addition, the study examined the association of age, socioeconomic status (SES) and acculturation with intake of n-3 fatty acids. The n-3 FFQ was developed from preliminary interviews, analyzed for content validity and pilot tested. The final instrument containing 209 items (15 culturally-specific dishes) was tested with 162 first-generation Latinas. One-on-one interviews in Spanish were conducted to validate the FFQ. Stress, Adult Attachment, And Academic Success Among Community College Students, Linda L. Petroff Nov 2008

Stress, Adult Attachment, And Academic Success Among Community College Students, Linda L. Petroff

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Little is known about predictors of academic success among two-year community college students. The purpose of this study was to examine the predictors of stress, adult attachment, and their interaction on the outcome variables of grade-point average and course completion among 160 two-year community college participants in a small Midwestern community college. Previous research had found relationships among these variables among four-year college students. Thus, it is important to examine these variables as predictors of academic success among community college students. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire and three surveys which included scales with established reliability and validity: the Inventory of …

A Correlational Study On Parental Attachment And Spiritual Development Of College Students, Mary-Ellen Madigan Oct 2008

A Correlational Study On Parental Attachment And Spiritual Development Of College Students, Mary-Ellen Madigan

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

During college, students search for meaning in their lives and question their beliefs, behavior, and mortality (Garber, 1996). One way that students search for meaning is through their spiritual lives. Spirituality is “the personal quest for understanding of ultimate questions about life, about meaning, and about relationship to the sacred or transcendent” (Koenig, McCullough & Larson, 2001, p. 18). Parental attachment theory explains that students who have developed a secure attachment with their parents see their parents as a secure base from which to explore their environment (Kenny & Donaldson, 1991, p. 480). This environment may be internal or external. …

Faculty Training In Developing An E-Portfolio System, Cindy J. Harvel Aug 2008

Faculty Training In Developing An E-Portfolio System, Cindy J. Harvel

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In fall semester, 2007 research was performed at Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) to determine which means of training for the Chalk and Wire e-Portfolio system was most satisfying to faculty and cooperating teachers. A fifteen question survey was given to 171 assessors. Fourteen questions gathered quantitative data, one qualitative. Four cross tabulations completed with a chi square test for independence showed that faculty and cooperating teachers ratings of their success using Chalk and Wire was independent of: (a) comfort level with computers, (b) age of assessor, (c) assessors’ satisfaction with student assistant, and (d) assessors' rating of administrators' helpfulness. …

The Relationship Between The Curriculum, Instruction, And Assessment Provided By Wyoming High School Mathematics Teachers And The Performance Of Wyoming 11th Grade Students On The Adequate Yearly Progress Of Wyoming Schools, Mary C. Moler

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This research study investigated the mathematics teachers’ classroom practices in curriculum, instruction, and assessments by a self-reporting questionnaire. The questionnaire was sent to all 295 Wyoming high school mathematics teachers in February of 2007. There were 164 questionnaires completed by 67 out of the 75 schools contacted.

It also investigated how those practices related to the mathematics portion of school’s Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) on state standards with the federally mandated No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The researcher calculated scaled average scores on 13 variables related to a 32-question questionnaire. The groups analyzed were sorted into three levels …

Determining The Accuracy Of Item Parameter Standard Error Of Estimates In Bilog-Mg 3, Michael Toland

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study was conducted to determine the accuracy of item parameter standard error of estimates (SEEs) produced by BILOG-MG 3 by examining their performance under a variety of conditions. The Factors manipulated in this study were type of underlying difficulty (b) distribution, type of underlying discrimination (a) distribution, type of underlying lower asymptote (c) distribution, test length (I), type of underlying latent trait (θ) distribution, sample size (J), and the number of quadrature points. Results showed that the accuracy of the estimated SEb under the 1PL, 2PL, and 3PL models depended on the magnitude of the b parameter being estimated. …

Mixed-Ability Secondary Science In One Urban School District: A Multiple Case Study, Francis A. Tworek May 2008

Mixed-Ability Secondary Science In One Urban School District: A Multiple Case Study, Francis A. Tworek

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The standards and accountability movements demand that all students be given the opportunity to learn more science than ever before. However, there is much uncertainty about how educators should proceed with this task. Issues of concern include achievement gaps, tracking, and graduation requirements. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the challenges identified by four secondary science teachers in one urban public school district as they taught classes that included students representing a wide range of abilities and prior academic success. These mixed-ability science classes were generally defined as science classes which are required for high school …

Significance Of The Influence Of World View And Racial Socialization On Death Anxiety Beliefs Of Blackamerican Men, Larry Cameron Menyweather-Woods May 2008

Significance Of The Influence Of World View And Racial Socialization On Death Anxiety Beliefs Of Blackamerican Men, Larry Cameron Menyweather-Woods

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Major sociological theories of violent crime have successfully linked criminal activity with socioeconomic status. The linkage of socioeconomic conditions to homicides has led to the theory that the primary determinant of violent crimes lies within a group’s value system and failure to integrate into the dominant culture’s value system crime only increases.

This study investigated whether world view, racial socialization and religion influence the death anxiety and death attitude of Blackamerican men ages 19-35 and 65 and older. If relationship existed, there would be an implied opportunity for building new strategies to decrease the incidence of homicides in the Blackamerican …
