Marginalia And Meaning: Off-Site/Sight/Cite Points Of Reference For Extended Trajectories In Learning, James Haywood Rolling Jr. Jan 2006

Marginalia And Meaning: Off-Site/Sight/Cite Points Of Reference For Extended Trajectories In Learning, James Haywood Rolling Jr.

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This study argues that drawing upon off-site/ sight/ cite points of reference affords a space for extended trajectories of learning and the cultivation of rich and atypical personal meaning unavailable within the terrain and climes of typical schooling frameworks. This paper continues the author's effort to establish the efficacy of a poststructural and poetic aesthetic in qualitative research writing.

Precinct, Gayle Gorman Jan 2006

Precinct, Gayle Gorman

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

"Precinct" was a site-specific art project/ performance/ exhibit put on by SITE: Buffalo Artist Collective, an organization devoted to a nontraditional approach to art emphasizing the experiential and the value of spectered memories contained in found objects and images. With the aid of the Buffalo Arts Commission, the abandoned police precinct (now destroyed) on Niagara Street on Buffalo's West side was open to the public, occupied and interacted with for a one-day event. This venue was specifically selected in order to bypass the gallerycentric mode of display which tends to dominate the world of art. By doing so, SITE made …

Art Education And Disability: Re-Envisioning Educational Efficiency, Michelle Kraft Jan 2006

Art Education And Disability: Re-Envisioning Educational Efficiency, Michelle Kraft

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The value of efficiency has long been an ideal of educational policy in the United States (Guthrie, 1980). Where the education-and especially the art education-of students who are experiencing disabilities is concerned, traditional notions of efficiency (which are primarily rooted in economic standards of measure) may prove inflexible and inadequate in assessing educational outcomes. Guthrie (1980) equates efficiency in the schools with productivity. He explains that a number of factors may affect productivity, including availability of resources and students' environment and social background; likewise, students' varying (dis)abilities can be added to these factors. Indeed, traditional educational efficiency emphasizes autonomy and …

Grasping The Site/Sight/Cite Of The Image: A Lacanian Explication, Jan Jagodzinski Jan 2006

Grasping The Site/Sight/Cite Of The Image: A Lacanian Explication, Jan Jagodzinski

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Reading images psychoanalytically from a Lacanian perspective has its challenges. The first task of this essay is to provide a way through what is often taken to be difficult and impenetrable theory, to explicate how the homology site/ sight/ cite can be understood in any act of critical perception. Its second task is to make distinctions between a psychoanalytic understanding of the subject as being 'split' or divided (as represented by the matheme '$,' Lacan's symbol for this form of subjectivity) when applied to art, as opposed to a naive realist subject of representation or a savvy poststructuralist (decentered) subject …

Two-Year College Faculty And Administrator Perceptions Of The Transition To A Learning-Centered College, John Michael Brackin Jan 2006

Two-Year College Faculty And Administrator Perceptions Of The Transition To A Learning-Centered College, John Michael Brackin

Theses and Dissertations

A single qualitative case study design was used to determine the perceptions of administrators and faculty from a community college that is considered to be transitioning to a learning-centered college. The researcher conducted the case study to describe, explain and evaluate the phenomenon, and also recorded facilitators or roadblocks identified during the process. A conceptual framework model was used to produce an auditing procedure that identified the progress, perceptions and status of the community college as it transitioned to become a learning-centered college. Interviews of administrators and faculty, a survey of full-time faculty, and document reviews were the primary means …

E-Learning 2.0: New Frontier For Student Empowerment, William Renner Jan 2006

E-Learning 2.0: New Frontier For Student Empowerment, William Renner

EDU-COM International Conference

Second generation web applications (Web 2.0) are transforming elearning and opening new frontiers for learner empowerment, control and engagement. New online technologies allow individuals to filter and control existing content (aggregation), easily create new content (personal publishing) and rapidly communicate, inform and distribute this information with peers through online social networking services. Learners are able to construct highly personalized learning environments, assembled from a very large range of tools available on the internet, including blogs, wikis, podcasts and social bookmarking sites. Together the technical and social advances which characterize this change may even constitute a paradigm shift, which some authors …

Multicultural Reservations, Hybrid Avenues: Reflecting On Culture In Art Education, David Gall Jan 2006

Multicultural Reservations, Hybrid Avenues: Reflecting On Culture In Art Education, David Gall

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This paper examines the role of hybridity in culture as it relates to art education. Curriculum strategies in art education are based essentially on pluralist premises. Such strategies recognize diversity, honor differences, and try to redress the inequitable Eurocentric models of the past. Nevertheless, even in their most critical forms they reproduce a scheme of culture that subtly confirms the established order of Modern hierarchies, and fail to capture the fluid, hybrid, and uneven character of culture. Margaret Archer's theories of culture, society, and change are among the most insightful to date. Taking them on board will ensure that our …

Taking A Closer Look At Measurement – Using Teacher Read Alouds Of Nonfiction To Develop Students’ Measurement Sense, Elana Joram, Faith Garcia Jan 2006

Taking A Closer Look At Measurement – Using Teacher Read Alouds Of Nonfiction To Develop Students’ Measurement Sense, Elana Joram, Faith Garcia

Faculty Publications

Many students think of measurement as a set of procedures, for example, lining up a ruler with an object, and stating the number on the ruler that corresponds with one end of the object. This may be one reason that measurement is typically one of the weakest areas of mathematical achievement on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (Struchens, Martin, & Kenney, 2003). To combat students’ weaknesses in measurement, we suggest that in the early grades they need to develop a feel for standard measurement units, such as inches and feet, and become familiar with real world referents that correspond …

Preservice Elementary Teachers Create Mathematical Mystery Object Boxes To Review And Teach Numeration, Algebra, Geometry, And Measurement, Audrey C. Rule, E. Grueniger, D. Hingre, K. Mckenna, Rov C. Williams Jan 2006

Preservice Elementary Teachers Create Mathematical Mystery Object Boxes To Review And Teach Numeration, Algebra, Geometry, And Measurement, Audrey C. Rule, E. Grueniger, D. Hingre, K. Mckenna, Rov C. Williams

Open Educational Resources

A study was conducted with forty-seven preservice childhood (elementary) education teachers (42 F, 5 M) enrolled in two mathematics methods classes taught by the same instructor to determine the effect of these college students making curriculum materials appropriate for upper elementary students on the preservice teachers' knowledge of numeration, algebra, geometry, and measurement. A Mathematical Mystery Object Box is a box containing a set of objects with corresponding clue cards. The student reads the mathematical clues addressing numeration, algebra, geometry, and measurement and attempts to locate the object that satisfies them, checking work with the picture of the correct object …

Preservice Elementary Teachers Use Drawings And Make Sets Of Materials To Explain Multiplication And Division By Fractions, Audrey C. Rule, J. E. Hallagan Jan 2006

Preservice Elementary Teachers Use Drawings And Make Sets Of Materials To Explain Multiplication And Division By Fractions, Audrey C. Rule, J. E. Hallagan

Open Educational Resources

Background: Multiplication and division by fractions are among the most troublesome concepts in the elementary mathematics curriculum. Recent studies have shown that preservice elementary teachers in the United States do not have deep understandings of these concepts. Effective ways to improve preservice teachers' conceptual understanding of these concepts need to be identified. Citation: Rule, A. C., & Hallagan, J., editors. (2006). Preservice elementary teachers use drawings and make sets of materials to explain multiplication and division by fractions. A research study presented at the 2nd Annual Preparing Mathematicians to Educate Teachers (PMET) Conference at Oswego, New York, June 6, 2006. …

Revving It Up! Helping Students Investigate The Forces That Power A Motor, Roy D. Unruh, Larry Escalada Jan 2006

Revving It Up! Helping Students Investigate The Forces That Power A Motor, Roy D. Unruh, Larry Escalada

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The Electric Motors learning cycle demonstrates how magnetic fields and electric currents interact to produce a force on a moving charge. In the exploratory activity students manipulate a magnetic field to produce motion in a cone and construct an electric motor by winding an armature and field coils. In the concept development activity, students construct a simple motor with a single coil and ceramic magnets. They feel the force on a current carrying coil in a magnetic field that leads to the right-hand rule. They also analyze the operation of a motor used to power a toy car. The application …

Pregnancy-Related School Dropout And Prior School Performance In South Africa, Monica J. Grant, Kelly Hallman Jan 2006

Pregnancy-Related School Dropout And Prior School Performance In South Africa, Monica J. Grant, Kelly Hallman

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Using data collected in 2001 in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, this working paper examines the factors associated with schoolgirl pregnancy, as well as the likelihood of school dropout and subsequent re-enrollment among pregnant schoolgirls. This analysis triangulates data collected from birth histories, education histories, and data concerning pregnancy to strengthen the identification of young women who became pregnant while enrolled in school and to define discrete periods of school interruption prior to first pregnancy. Given the increasing levels of female school participation in sub-Saharan Africa, our findings suggest that future studies will benefit from exploring the causal relationships between prior school …

Welcome to the Summer 2006 issue of the ICCTE Journal.

In May of 2006, a little over one month ago, about 90 teacher educators and others gathered at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia for the CCTE conference. It was a wonderful time of renewal and refreshment, as well as a time to be challenged and encouraged in our work as educators. I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to our colleagues at Regent University who worked diligently to plan for and deliver a wonderful conference. The 2008 conference will be hosted by Gordon College, in the Boston …

Imsa20: Bold Ideas, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

IMSA History

In the mid 1980s, the state of Illinois, recognizing a sharply increased need for highly skilled leaders in mathematics, science and technology, founded the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy®. Twenty years later, the national demand for mathematics, science and technology leaders has never been greater. The National Academies report - Rising Above the Gathering Storm and President Bush's American Competitiveness Initiative - address the growing concern that the United States is losing its competitive advantage as countries abroad invest heavily in the education and training of scientists and engineers. Both initiatives call for increased commitments in scientific research and in …
