The Value Of Lectures In Teacher Education: The Group Perspective, Geoffrey H. Waugh, Russell F. Waugh
The Value Of Lectures In Teacher Education: The Group Perspective, Geoffrey H. Waugh, Russell F. Waugh
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper proposes the use of a model of large student lectures in teacher education programmes to emphasize the group perspective, rather than the individual perspective, during lecture presentation and which complement other types of instruction such as tutorials and seminars. The model involves eight variables, manipulated by the lecturer that contribute to a good lecture series with more than 100 students. These are: atmosphere in the lecture hall, structure and clarity of the lecture, the learning and information content of the lecture, lightheartedness during the lecture, a personal and helpful relationship with the students, arranged and interesting breaks during …

Confocal Microscopy Of Plant Cells, Carol L. Wymer, Alison F. Beven, Kurt Boudonck, Clive W. Lloyd
Confocal Microscopy Of Plant Cells, Carol L. Wymer, Alison F. Beven, Kurt Boudonck, Clive W. Lloyd
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
The increasing availability of confocal microscopy has begun a revolution in plant biology in which microscopy has again become a powerful tool for understanding structure and function. Examples of applications include: three dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the interphase microtubule array in large vacuolated epidermal cells (1); measuring cytoplasmic free calcium changes in whole maize coleoptile segments in response to phototropic and gravitropic stimuli (2); and studying symplastic phloem connections in intact Arabidopsis roots (3). The major reason for this revolution is the ability to collect clear images in three dimensions due to the lack of image degradation caused by out-of-focus …
Some Methodological Concerns When Estimating The Size Of Organizing Activities, Eric Swank, John D. Clapp
Some Methodological Concerns When Estimating The Size Of Organizing Activities, Eric Swank, John D. Clapp
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Researchers and organizers recognize that social movements experience periods of inception, expansion, and decline. Although the movement literature is laden with numerous theoretical formulations on this topic, there are few articles that overtly address the issue of data collection. This paper addresses this methodological issue in detail. In doing so, we use previous media research and two case studies to illustrate the problems associated with the most frequently used data sources of event size. Finally, the paper suggests several research strategies that might enhance the accuracy of those studies that try to trace the protest cycles of community organizing efforts.

The Relationship Between Personality Type And Career Pathway Choices Among Ninth And Tenth Grade Students, Margaret Mcilroy Goodin
Theses
Two hundred three ninth and tenth grade students from a small, rural. public high school were tested using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator {MBTI) Form G. Students were divided into six groups on the basis of their previously chosen career pathway. as prescribed by the Missouri Model Guidance Program. using the Career Pathways Interest Inventory (CPIJ). The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a significant relationship between personality type and career pathway choice among adolescent students. The two variables were compared using a chi-square statistical analysis. Results indicated that a significant relationship between personality type and career …

Writing Portfolios In A Second Grade Classroom, Cheryl R. Schwery
Writing Portfolios In A Second Grade Classroom, Cheryl R. Schwery
Graduate Research Papers
Assessment of a student's writing ability should entail descriptive qualitative techniques. One way to provide a qualitative assessment is through the use of portfolios. In using portfolios, students are actively immersed in their own learning and in establishing goals for future learning. In doing this, instruction is more closely related to assessment. The value of writing portfolios, implementation, and introduction of portfolios within a second grade classroom will be discussed. Focus will be on three second grade students, with varying abilities, as they progress in their writing and instructional needs.
Reading Recovery : Impact Of An Early Intervention Approach, Lisa J. Atkinson-Hoefer
Reading Recovery : Impact Of An Early Intervention Approach, Lisa J. Atkinson-Hoefer
Graduate Research Papers
This study involved 12 participants from an elementary school in a rural district including: two classroom teachers, three randomly selected Reading Recovery students, three parents of the randomly selected Reading Recovery students, and four randomly selected non-Reading Recovery students. The primary purpose of this study was to track progress of the selected Reading Recovery students throughout the course of their program. Results indicated that the selected Reading Recovery students functioned at an average performance level at the end of their program compared to a sample of non-Reading Recovery peers who performed at a higher level. Interviews from participating classroom teachers …

Implications And Prospects Of Reforming The Market For Secondary Education In The U.S., Steve Kapsos
University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics
The purpose of this paper is to address the complex issue of public school reform. I will focus primarily on the rather generic concept of school choice, which will inevitably be defined and redefined, throughout my analysis. In doing this, I will first examine the structure and composition of the market for education in America. I will then briefly look at some theoretical approaches to educational reform. Lastly, I will examine specific reform proposals that draw on some of the many varying concepts of choice as well as currently enacted projects that have a form of choice as their focus. …
