Using Science Misconceptions For Developing Critical Thinking In Learners And Teachers, Neuza M. Defigueredo Dec 1994

Using Science Misconceptions For Developing Critical Thinking In Learners And Teachers, Neuza M. Defigueredo

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Students' poor interest and academic achievement in science as well as their inability to master situations in their everyday life seem to be related to their lack of skills in critical and creative thinking. However, teaching such skills within both primary and secondary curricula is not mandatory. The consensus is much more toward teaching thinking skills through content than as a separate course. In this thesis the conflict between students' prior conceptions about the natural world and scientific concepts is viewed as a resource for teaching thinking skills. A review of the literature on science misconceptions in mechanics suggests that …

In Pursuit Of Persistence: A Qualitative Investigation Of Community College Stopouts' Attempts To Obtain A College Degree, Doris Jean Ivie Dec 1994

In Pursuit Of Persistence: A Qualitative Investigation Of Community College Stopouts' Attempts To Obtain A College Degree, Doris Jean Ivie

Doctoral Dissertations

Twelve community college stopouts (current students who had stopped attending college for at least one semester in the past and who had since re-enrolled) who fit the "success" criterion of having achieved sophomore status and of maintaining at least a 3.00 grade-point average were interviewed using nonstructured reflective interview techniques. The participants were encouraged to reflect on their disparate experiences of college, on themselves within each of those experiences, and on sources of social support that had contributed to their decisions to leave, to return to, and to remain in college. The participants discussed their various college experiences in terms …

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate experimentally the combined effects of an information package comprised of a written pamphlet and a videotape on physicians' knowledge about federal law and its implication for making referrals to early intervention programs. There were 38 physicians with practice located in a 16-county region of East Tennessee who participated in the study. Physicians were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Physicians assigned to the experimental group received the information package and the Physicians' Knowledge and Practice Questionnaire. Physicians in this group were given 2 weeks to review the materials and complete …

Calculus-Based Physics Exploratory Study: Summary Report, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Documents

During the 1992-1993 academic year a number of elements (national level surveys and research reports, IMSA’s professional development focus; a climate of reflective inquiry) focused attention on the participation and achievement of females in mathematics and science at a national level and, specifically, the participation and achievement of females in mathematics and science at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. These elements served as the catalyst for the calculus-based physics exploratory study.

Teaching Thinking Skills In The Content Area: A Workshop For Secondary School Teachers, Evelyn Ryan

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

This thesis presents a curriculum for a workshop on teaching thinking skills in the content area designed for secondary school teachers. In-service time for the workshop is twenty hours. The first fifteen hours are scheduled for one week in the summer. Two follow-up sessions, each two and a half hours in length, are scheduled during the school year. The purpose of this curriculum is to establish a foundation for skillful thinking-purposeful thought that is aware not only of its objective but of its own processes. In order to accomplish this purpose the workshop has two goals. The first goal is …

Read It Again!: A Study Of Young Children And Poetry, Barbara J. Sepura

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

She sells sea shells by the seashore. This little tongue twister came back to me recently as I first experienced collecting little shells along the shores of the Atlantic. It wasn't too surprising that my mind rambled so. Little meaningful rhymes and verses have always had a habit of popping into my head in a variety of situations. I recall having learned most of these from my mother in the early years of life. In her natural way she gave me a heritage rich in rhyme, verse and song that has supported me in daily living.

Priority Of Reading Instruction Revisited: Evidence From A Regression Analysis Of Adult Esl Learners' Reading Ability, Zhihui Fang

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Historically, there has been an intense debate over the most effective approach to instruction: bottom-up versus top down (Adams, 1990; Chall, 1967; Grabe, 1991; McCarthy, 1991; Swaffar, 1988). With the increasing emphasis on the role of context in literacy activities (Anderson and Pearson, 1984; Lave, 1988; Steffensen, Joag-dev, and Anderson, 1979), reading research in English as a second language (ESL) has in the recent past focused on the effects of prior knowledge, or schemata, on comprehension (Carrell, 1984, 1987; Dubin and Bycina, 1991; Lee, 1986). Most of these studies generally reported significant effects of background knowledge on reading performance. Concomitantly, …

Bibliotherapeutic Literature: A Key Facet Of Whole Language Instruction For The At-Risk Student, Dan T. Ouzts

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Literature is the creative product of the minds of creative people. As a painting serves to fire the imagination, so does a fine story, a well-composed poem, or a good book (Smith, 1975). Literature is not a subject that should be taught but one that should be read and enjoyed. It is through literature that children develop interests and pleasure in reading. Moreover, literature stirs the imagination and creativity of children instead of destroying their interests. These are the basic foundations of lifelong learning (McMillan and Gentile, 1988). Literat

World View, Culture, And Science Education, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

In the last few years many science education policy documents, including those from Project 2000+, have noted the need for further knowledge and understanding of how people individually and as members of social and cultural groups learn and teach science. To this end science educators have studied cognitive development and mental capacity. They have explored the effectiveness of various instructional strategies. Among other things they have investigated the errors students make. However, what students believe about the physical world, belief rooted and nurtured in students' socio-cultural environments, has received far less attention. In a non-Western economically developing nation one speaks …

Attitudes Of Elementary Principals Toward Parent Involvement In Schools In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Linda V. Brittle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the attitudes of principals toward parent involvement in schools. The population for the study consisted of all public school elementary principals in the Commonwealth of Virginia. A random sample procedure was employed and an instrument was developed specifically for the study. An initial and second mailing resulted in an overall response rate of 53%. Factor analysis identified 5 groupings in parent involvement. Factors were labeled: Decision-Making, Policy-Making, Home Tutor/Co-Learner, Socio-Economic Status, and Parent Desire and Expertise. Seven null hypotheses were formulated and tested for the study. It was found that …

Using Storybooks To Teach Science Themes, Sandra Moser Dec 1994

Using Storybooks To Teach Science Themes, Sandra Moser

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Sympathy, empathy, respect, admiration, affection: These are not words normally found in the science texts of primary level classrooms, and the emotions they name are not ordinarily associated with the teaching of science. Yet the young writer quoted above communicates an involvement with small creatures —even an urgency —that was learned through literature. And this emotional involvement was gained right along with a knowledge of spider anatomy, web building and feeding habits. Through literature—storybooks — this student learned science content intertwined with values.

Caught In The Middle: The Challenge Of Middle Level Education, Charles C. Robinson Dec 1994

Caught In The Middle: The Challenge Of Middle Level Education, Charles C. Robinson

Bridgewater Review

There is widespread evidence that a mismatch exists between what middle level schools offer and what 10 to 14 year olds need. More and more of these “early adolescents” are experimenting with drugs and alcohol, becoming pregnant, and dropping out. These issues and the increased incidents of violence at this age cause many parents to view with anxiety their children's transition from the relatively safe elementary school to the unknown, often maligned middle or junior high school. Prospective teachers most often choose not to work in the middle grades because they don’t think they can work with “those kids”. Who …

Students Who Are The First Generation Of Their Family To Attend College: A Comparative Study Of Western Washington University Frosh, Sarah Dittman, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Joseph E. Trimble

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

Executive Summary: Information for this report was obtained from a study conducted to determine the relative level of adjustment to college of first-generation and second-generation freshmen at Western Washington University. The study utilized the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ), a 67 item self-report adjustment measure. The SACQ is composed of a full-scale and four subscales: academic adjustment, social adjustment, personal-emotional adjustment, and attachment to the school the student is attending. The SACQ was administered to a randomly selected sample of 250 first and second- generation freshman students. Data analysis of survey results indicated that first-generation students do not measure …
