Mapping Student Achievement, Geoff Masters, Ray Adams, Jan Lokan
Mapping Student Achievement, Geoff Masters, Ray Adams, Jan Lokan
Prof Ray Adams
The analyses, publications and reports of quantitative data in education and the social sciences usually omit basic information on the construct measured. Probabilistic models for test data make it possible to delineate coherent and richly described measurement continua that facilitate interpretation of student achievement. The potential of conjoint measurement to bring about fundamental advances in educational testing practice lies in part in the opportunities it provides to build useful maps of learning domains and to use those maps in communicating student achievements. This chapter presents two applications of conjoint measurement aimed at constructing and describing achievement variables, developing insights into …

Subject Choice In Years 11 And 12, John Ainley, Lyn Robinson, Adrian Beavis, Gerald Elsworth, M Fleming
Dr John Ainley
This report describes patterns of subject enrolments by students in the final two years of secondary school and the relationship of those patterns with a range of personal, social and school characteristics. It examines the combination of subjects which students include in their programs since the package of subjects may be more influential than enrolment in any particular subject.

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Using A Computer- Interactive Format For Music Assessment, Jennifer Bryce, Margaret Wu
Dr Jennifer Bryce
This article considers the advantages and disadvantages of using a computer interactive format for assessment. It is written in the light of experiences involving the adaptation of an existing music test designed for use at the beginning of secondary school to a computer interactive format requiring only the basic hardware that is likely to be available in Australian secondary schools.

Public Information Arrival, Thomas Berry, Keith Howe
Public Information Arrival, Thomas Berry, Keith Howe
Thomas D Berry
The authors develop a measure of public information flow to financial markets and use it to document the patterns of information arrival, with an emphasis on the intraday flows. The measure is the number of news releases by Reuter's News Service per unit of time. The authors find that public information arrival is nonconstant, displaying seasonalities and distinct intraday patterns. Next they relate their measure of public information to aggregate measures of intraday market activity. The authors' results suggest a positive, moderate relationship between public information and trading volume but an insignificant relationship with price volatility. Copyright 1994 by American …

Connecting Productive Schools And Workplaces For A Knowledge Society, Byrd Jones, Robert Maloy
Connecting Productive Schools And Workplaces For A Knowledge Society, Byrd Jones, Robert Maloy
Robert W. Maloy
As American education struggles to achieve new competencies for an emerging information age, popular reforms remain locked in industrial-era metaphors. Testing for basic skills, teacher professionalism, and school-business collaboration assumes that schooling prepares workers with skills for predictable roles. Meanwhile, computers and related technologies make possible low-cost information that is transforming learning and jobs. Hierarchical organizational structures that subordinated most employees have given way to flatter, flexible teams. Quasi-autonomous decision making by knowledgeable professionals extends to more and more workers. When businesses simply offer schools a few extra resources, they stunt interactive partnerships that enable youth and business cultures to …

Effect Of Applied Potential Upon The In Situ Structure Of Self-Assembled Monolayers On Gold Electrodes, Mark Anderson, Marilyn Gatin
Effect Of Applied Potential Upon The In Situ Structure Of Self-Assembled Monolayers On Gold Electrodes, Mark Anderson, Marilyn Gatin
Mark R. Anderson
Polarization modulation Fourier transform infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-FTIRRAS) has been utilized to study the in situ structure of octadecanethiol when adsorbed to gold electrode surfaces and with the application of potential to the substrate. It is found that applied potential has little effect upon the spectrum of the monolayer in the presence of D2O solutions containing 0.10 M NaClO4. The presence of an acetonitrile solution contacting the monolayer leads to small changes in the infrared spectrum relative to that seen in D2O solutions, suggestive of some small disordering of the monolayer caused by the presence of the acetonitrile. With …

Calibrating Essay Markers With The Partial Credit Model, Geoff Masters, Siek Khoo
Calibrating Essay Markers With The Partial Credit Model, Geoff Masters, Siek Khoo
Dr Siek Toon Khoo
This paper shows how a range of differences in marker behaviour, including leniency/severity and central tendency, can be detected and investigated using the Rasch partial credit model. The method allows for variations in the use of rating categories by estimating a set of rating 'thresholds' for each assessor. By calibrating each assessor's rating behaviour in this way, the method automatically takes account of detected differences among assessors in the measurement process.

Issues In The Measurement Of Change In Reading Achievement Over Time, Petra Lietz
Issues In The Measurement Of Change In Reading Achievement Over Time, Petra Lietz
Dr Petra Lietz
The analyses reported in this paper seek to examine: (1)the factor structures underlying the tests employed in the Reading Comprehension and the Reading Literacy Studies. In particular, it is of interest whether or not the assumption holds of a common factor or trait, that underlies the processes involved in reading comprehension, as argued by Thorndike (1973a). If this were not the case, it would not be appropriate to calculate a total score which is necessary to equate student performance over time. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) is used to examine this issue. (2)whether or not similar results are obtained across countries …
Patterns Of Interaction In The Lexical Development In Two Languages Of Bilingual Infants, Barbara Pearson, Sylvia Fernandez
Patterns Of Interaction In The Lexical Development In Two Languages Of Bilingual Infants, Barbara Pearson, Sylvia Fernandez
Barbara Zurer Pearson
We investigated the extent to which bilingual children follow the same patterns and timetable of lexical development as monolinguals. For a group of 20 simultaneous bilingual (English-Spanish) infants, ages 10 to 30 months, we looked at the patterns of growth in one language in relation to growth in the other and also with respect to growth in both languages combined. The MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories (CDI), standardized parent report forms in Spanish and English, provided measures of lexical growth in two languages at varying intervals within the age range. We plotted the two single-language measures, as well as Total and …
