Instructional Resource Innovations For The Introductory Communication Course, Craig Newburger Jan 1994

Instructional Resource Innovations For The Introductory Communication Course, Craig Newburger

Basic Communication Course Annual

The following four articles represent the proceedings of an SCA Seminar held at the New Orleans convention: "Instructional Resource Innovations for the Introductory Communication Course." These monographs detail four multi-media resource areas that introductory communication course directors can consider: Storytelling — the student-as-medium (Pamela Cooper); Visualization — the student-as-medium (Joe Ayres and Debbie M. Ayres); Self-confrontation — applications involving the use of videotape with public speaking instruction (Craig Newburger, Linda Brannon, and Arlie Daniel); and Computer-Mediated-Communication (Gerald M. Santoro and Gerald M. Phillips).

The Role Of Performance Visualization In The Basic Public Speaking Course: Current Applications And Future Possibilities, Joe Ayres, Debbie M. Ayres Jan 1994

The Role Of Performance Visualization In The Basic Public Speaking Course: Current Applications And Future Possibilities, Joe Ayres, Debbie M. Ayres

Basic Communication Course Annual

This essay discusses current applications of visualization as well as future possible applications. At present visualization is used to help people cope with speech anxiety. Of the versions of visualization currently available, performance visualization seems superior because it helps people reduce anxiety and improve their presentation skills. The conditions under which performance visualization ought to be employed are discussed along with potential refinements in the procedure. The second section of the essay suggests that visualization may play a broader role in public speaking courses than it currently does. We point out that public speaking courses are grounded in a western …

Self-Confrontation And Public Speaking Apprehension: To Videotape Or Not To Videotape Student Speakers?, Craig Newburger, Linda Brannon, Arlie Daniel Jan 1994

Self-Confrontation And Public Speaking Apprehension: To Videotape Or Not To Videotape Student Speakers?, Craig Newburger, Linda Brannon, Arlie Daniel

Basic Communication Course Annual

This study examines the impact of self-confrontation (self-viewing of videotaped speeches) on student public speaking apprehension. Subjects who were confronted with their videotaped speeches (as post-performance feedback) did not experience a reduction in their public speaking apprehension, while subjects who were not so confronted did experience a significant reduction. The experience of presenting several speeches before an audience appears to be the intervening variable that invoked the reduction in public speaking apprehension, while self-confrontation appears to inhibit this reduction.

Human Relations Training For Student Teachers, Richard Stahlhut, Richard Hawkes Jan 1994

Human Relations Training For Student Teachers, Richard Stahlhut, Richard Hawkes

Faculty Publications

Human relations training is a requirement for all teacher education majors graduating from Iowa colleges and universities. At the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) this course is delivered to preservice teacher education students in conjunction with their full semester student teaching experience. Major goals of the training program are: (1) to confront individuals with experiences designed to create an awareness of biases; attitudes; and beliefs and to create awareness of the degree of congruency between stated beliefs and actual behavior; and (2) to internalize and translate such awareness into actions which result in more positive relationships within the teaching/learning environment. …

Teaching For Cognitive Growth, Barbara J. Duch, Mary K. Norton Jan 1994

Teaching For Cognitive Growth, Barbara J. Duch, Mary K. Norton

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

The Perry Model

The theme of Perry's work is that no matter how unclouded our message or lucid our meaning, students make their own meanings from their own cognitive structures. Our students come to us naive epistemologists, replete with mistaken views of the nature of knowledge and its acquisition. Perry charts their odyssey from naiveté to maturity through stages where these restrictive cognitive chrysalises are outgrown for increasingly more subtle structures. Briefly, the journey involves the following.

Learning A Lot Vs. Looking Good: A Source Of Anxiety For Students, Anastasia S. Hagen Jan 1994

Learning A Lot Vs. Looking Good: A Source Of Anxiety For Students, Anastasia S. Hagen

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

Many teachers have observed that some of their best students also appear to be the students with the greatest amount of anxiety towards school. Teachers have often asked themselves, "Why is this bright, capable student feeling so anxious about what they will be asked to do in my course?" This article is an attempt to provide some insight into this situation with respect to the way students set academic goals.

Changing Priorities In Higher Education: Promotion And Tenure, Robert Diamond Jan 1994

Changing Priorities In Higher Education: Promotion And Tenure, Robert Diamond

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

A recent study involving over 23,000 faculty chairs, deans and administrators at research universities indicated that even those most directly involved with the present reward system feel that the balance between research and teaching needs to be modified. Most significantly, the results indicate that an effort to modify the system to recognize and reward teaching would be supported by a majority of those surveyed. It may be the time to propose a change in the system.

What They Don't Know Can Hurt Them: The Role Of Prior Knowledge In Learning, Marilla Svinicki Jan 1994

What They Don't Know Can Hurt Them: The Role Of Prior Knowledge In Learning, Marilla Svinicki

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

Discusses prior knowledge and current learning, and using prior knowledge in instruction.

The lesson we take from the research on prior knowledge is simply this: students are not blank slates on which our words on inscribed. The students bring more to the interpretation of the situation than we realize. What they learn is conditioned by what they already know. What they know can be as damaging as what they don't know.

Of Gurus, Gatekeepers, And Guides: Metaphors Of College Teaching, Mary K. Norton Jan 1994

Of Gurus, Gatekeepers, And Guides: Metaphors Of College Teaching, Mary K. Norton

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

From what the students tell me, in their experience there are three common metaphors of the college teacher. (Of course there are many more.) While we may disagree that these are the images that guide us, the students' viewpoint is nevertheless instructive, if only to remind us of the difference between what they perceive and we intend. My purpose here is to look through the students' eyes to explore what these metaphors reveal, especially in terms of their "collateral lessons," as Dewey called them: the implied concomitant messages students may draw from them: Guru, Gatekeeper, and Guide.

A Study Of Children's Drawing Types And Factors Influencing Choice Of Subject Matter, Stella Clark Jan 1994

A Study Of Children's Drawing Types And Factors Influencing Choice Of Subject Matter, Stella Clark

Theses : Honours

The main purpose of this study was to determine what children draw when given a free choice of subject in the context of the classroom. The social Influences believed to affect children's drawings were also investigated. Another research interest related to Whether or not gender was a significant factor in the production of different drawing types. The significance of this study is connected with the desirability for teachers to have an understanding of children's perceptions of the world and the factors which influence them, as it is accepted that awareness of children's interests and influences may lead to more relevant …

Attitudes Towards Mathematics Of Vietnamese And Non-Vietnamese Senior Secondary Female Students, Robert G. Palmer Jan 1994

Attitudes Towards Mathematics Of Vietnamese And Non-Vietnamese Senior Secondary Female Students, Robert G. Palmer

Theses : Honours

Throughout Australia and indeed in many parts of the world, there is a growing realisation that girls tend not to achieve their full potential at school, especially with regard to higher level mathematics units. Many girls limit their post-school options by choosing not to continue with mathematics when it ceases to be compulsory in Years 11 and 12. They also choose less difficult mathematics units and participate at a level below their potential. Much of the research has focused on gender differences in attitudes towards mathematics, and on participation and achievement in mathematics, but not on ethnic differences. The purpose …

Part-Time Work: The Attitudes, Perceptions And Opinions Of Year 11 Students, Marilyn Ralph Jan 1994

Part-Time Work: The Attitudes, Perceptions And Opinions Of Year 11 Students, Marilyn Ralph

Theses : Honours

A large number of full-time secondary students of all types have part-lime jobs although research shows that these jobs are not sought or shared proportionately amongst the student sub-groups. Previous research suggested that social class or socio-economic status (each defined in different ways by different researchers) had an effect on whether or not students engaged in part-lime work. However none suggested why this might be so. The purpose of this study was lo investigate the factors which influenced the decisions which students from different socio-economic backgrounds made about paid part-time work and to determine whether there were differences amongst these …

Determining The Validity And Reliability Of An Instrument Designed To Measure Metacognitive Behaviours, Anne L. Martin Jan 1994

Determining The Validity And Reliability Of An Instrument Designed To Measure Metacognitive Behaviours, Anne L. Martin

Theses : Honours

This project was designed to study the role of metacognition in mathematical problem solving. More specifically, it was designed to determine the validity and reliability of an instrument proposed to identify metacognitive behaviours in Year 7 children solving problems. The instrument was used to analyse audio tapes of pairs of students working on a non-routine problem (i.e., a problem that cannot be solved solely by the direct application of the basic operations). Analysis of the audio tapes involved categorizing metacognitive decisions as: orientation, organization, execution, and verification behaviours. A "cognitive-metacognitive" framework (Garofalo & Lester, 1985) was used as a basis …

A Review Of The Primary Extension And Challenge (P.E.A.C.) Programme In A Metropolitan District From A Parent, Teacher And Student Perspective, Wendy Perry Jan 1994

A Review Of The Primary Extension And Challenge (P.E.A.C.) Programme In A Metropolitan District From A Parent, Teacher And Student Perspective, Wendy Perry

Theses : Honours

The purpose of this research is to review the Primary Extension and Challenge Programme (P.E.A.C.) in a Metropolitan District, from a parent, classroom teacher and student perspective. P.E.A.C. has been operating in Western Australian primary schools for approximately 8 years, yet to date, only one evaluation of the P.E.A.C. programme has been conducted. This was carried out in the Swanbourne District in 1990. It appears vital that the programme is evaluated and that feedback is gained from all those involved - parents, classroom teachers and students. The sample of 106 subjects consisted of students from Years 5, 6 and 7 …

T.E.E. English Scores And Performance On Reading And Writing Tasks By First Year Education Students, Tracy Jacobs Jan 1994

T.E.E. English Scores And Performance On Reading And Writing Tasks By First Year Education Students, Tracy Jacobs

Theses : Honours

This study examined the literacy achievement of first year Bachelor of Arts (Primary Education) students at the Mount Lawley Campus of the Edith Cowan University. It had been suggested that these students possessed inadequate levels of literacy to function as competent teachers. Students are assumed to have adequate literacy ability for the Bachelor of Arts course, and thus the teaching profession, when they receive a pass mark in their T.E.E. English or English Literature examination. This study examined the correlation between the T.E.E. English score and the scores the students received on three other instruments measuring aspects of literacy. The …

Victorian Modern Cursive Handwriting In West Australian Schools, Deborah Ann Taylor Jan 1994

Victorian Modern Cursive Handwriting In West Australian Schools, Deborah Ann Taylor

Theses : Honours

The Victorian Modern Cursive script was introduced to Western Australia as the newly recommended handwriting style in 1990. The choice of this handwriting style, which is a foundation style similar to the Simple Modern Hand (Gourdie, 1981), was based upon the prediction that its use would facilitate the transition from beginners' script to full cursive writing. This assumption has not been tested in West Australian schools and hitherto no evaluation of the new handwriting model has been conducted. This study set out to evaluate and compare the legibility and fluency of cursive writing of a group of Year 3 children …

High School Girls Motivation Toward Mathematics: Effects Of Perceived Instrumentality And Attitude Toward The Future, Bruce D. Watt Jan 1994

High School Girls Motivation Toward Mathematics: Effects Of Perceived Instrumentality And Attitude Toward The Future, Bruce D. Watt

Theses : Honours

Research in the area of future time perspective has suggested that academic motivation is associated with the perceived instrumentality of academic pursuits, and affective attitude toward personal future (Van Calster, Lens & Nuttin, 1987). Motivation tends to be higher when perceived instrumentality is high, but only when one has a positive attitude toward personal future. The present study tested these findings in regard to motivation toward mathematics in a sample of 119 13- year-old high school girls. Main effects for affective attitude and perceived instrumentality on motivation were found. Students who had a positive affective attitude were more motivated than …

Openness Of Inquiry Of Laboratory Formats Currently Used In Lower Secondary Science, H. A. D. Bryce Jan 1994

Openness Of Inquiry Of Laboratory Formats Currently Used In Lower Secondary Science, H. A. D. Bryce

Theses : Honours

Laboratory formats can range from 'recipe' type activities, in which students just verify concepts, to 'open' inquiry activities, in which students design and carry out their own experiments. There is much support in the literature for the use of 'open' inquiry formats. By way of a questionnaire secondary science teachers, sent to a sample of lower this study investigated the proportions of the different that are currently being used in laboratory formats lower secondary science in Perth schools. The study found that most of the formats used required students to follow set procedures to verify or determine a concept. Few …

Performance-Based Assessment: Lessons Learned From Leading School Districts, John Seyfarth

MERC Publications

There is a strong sentiment among educators in the United States to change traditional methods of measuring student achievement. Many of those who favor such a change advocate the adoption of performance assessment. This project examines practices in three school districts that are recognized as leaders in the development and implementation of performance assessment programs in schools. Data were collected by interviews with district administrators and from documents. The finds of the study are presented in this report.

Performance assessment refers to a process for appraising learning that requires students to perform tasks designed for the purpose of demonstrating specified …

A Comparison Of Pedagogical Knowledge Structures Of Preservice Students And Teacher Educators In Two Institutions, Judith E. Rink, Karen E. French, Amelia M. Lee, Melinda A. Solomon, Susan K. Lynn

Faculty Publications

Understanding how the knowledge structures of preservice teachers develop as expertise is acquired would seem to be an important aspect of teacher preparation. The purpose of this study was to compare the pedagogical knowledge structures about effective teaching of preservice teachers and teacher educators in the professional preparation programs of two different institutions. Two groups of preservice teachers at two different points in their preparation program at each of the two institutions were asked to complete a concept map (Roehler et al., 1987) about effective teaching. One group completed the concept map just after the first teaching methods course, and …

When the Rockwood School District implemented site-based management in 19 90, the change dramatically altered the district's overall communications program.

The responsibilities and funds to pay for requested services were given to each of Rockwood' s schools and departments. As a projects, which result, monies were formerly for communications budgeted to the communications department, were shifted to the individual school accounts. Site-based management had seemingly l eft the communications department with a reduced budget and the challenge of recovering the schools' money and maintaining their business.

What has evolved is a more effective program that also attempts to generate revenue …

The Relationship Between The Educational Beliefs And The Instructional Practices Of Education Interns, Carl B. Williams Jan 1994

The Relationship Between The Educational Beliefs And The Instructional Practices Of Education Interns, Carl B. Williams

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Education researchers suggest that, since belief systems influence practicing teachers' behavior, it is important for teachers to examine their educational beliefs to determine whether those beliefs are consistent with current knowledge about teaching and learning.

If the same relationship between beliefs and practices of inservice teachers holds true for preservice teachers, since beliefs are extremely resistant to change, reflection upon educational beliefs should be cultivated during the preservice stage of teacher development. To discover whether such a parallel exists, 12 preservice teachers, during their internships, were selected for study. First, they responded to a series of vignettes to ascertain beliefs …
