The Effects Of Computer Inservice And Training On The Adoption Of A Computerized Grading System, Kelli J. Diemer Jan 1994

The Effects Of Computer Inservice And Training On The Adoption Of A Computerized Grading System, Kelli J. Diemer

Graduate Research Papers

While technology has been entering the educational setting for many years, there are teachers who continue to be fearful about adopting computers and other technology into their classes. Whenever new technology is introduced, teachers have legitimate concerns: How does this affect my daily routine? Will this replace me as a teacher? How will I learn about the new device? Is it right for the student? (Poirot, 1992b). These concerns can be answered if the technological implementation is successful. Creating a setting that is conducive to initial teacher acceptance of the technology and an eventual adoption of the tool at a …

A Study Of The Students' Attitudes Toward The Use Of Peer Teaching In The Educational Media Course At The University Of Northern Iowa, Irene Leong Yoke Chu

Graduate Research Papers

Traditionally, learning and teaching situations from elementary school through higher education do not provide opportunities for students to use each other as resources. In fact, more often than not the teacher is their main source of information and help. Such traditional modes of teaching has placed emphasis on individualizing instruction, i.e., self-paced instruction and competition. According to Johnson (cited in Waggoner,1971), in such teaching situations which are outcome-based, very little attention has been given to how students should relate to each other while working on instructional tasks. Collaborative learning modes, on the other hand, focus on learning as a cooperative …

Therapeutic Use Of Adolescent Play Activities, Sharon R. Freese Jan 1994

Therapeutic Use Of Adolescent Play Activities, Sharon R. Freese

Graduate Research Papers

Play therapy is to the child what verbalization is to the adult (Landreth 1982). Play therapy is utilized by the major approaches in therapy: psychoanalytic, client-centered, Adlerian, group, behavioral, and family (Hughes, 1991; Schaefer, 1976; Schaefer & O'Connor, 1 1983). Play therapy provides the child a natural approach to the therapist, enabling the child to reveal ideas, wishes, fantasies and attitudes without embarrassment or fear of being censored or punished (Lebo, 1982). Whereas generally adults are able to put their feelings, frustrations, anxieties, and personal problems into some form of verbal expression, children are not.

A Study To Determine Whether Oral Delivery Style, In Presenting Poetry To Students, Significantly Effects The Level Of Responsiveness To The Poetry, William H. Goff Ii

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Studies

Concerns about the lack of intrinsic motivation among students has been associated with behaviorism's emphasis on extrinsic rewards and with a general societal trend toward materialism. Teachers frequently comment that many students seem to have little interest in learning. This research examined one factor in student motivation, lesson delivery style.

Four 7th grade classes, two different classes from two different schools, were used, resulting in 69 subjects. Poetry was read to classes with either an aesthetic or a bland delivery style. The behavioral response of the students was noted as to whether or not they were indicative of physiological arousal. …

Linguistic Theory Applied To Teaching Practice: Looking Through Linguists' Eyes At An Urban Esl Classroom, Caroline Mary El-Kadi Jan 1994

Linguistic Theory Applied To Teaching Practice: Looking Through Linguists' Eyes At An Urban Esl Classroom, Caroline Mary El-Kadi

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

The quality of instruction in English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) programs is of utmost concern to urban educators as more and more non-native speakers settle in urban areas and need better language skills to participate fully in American society. Training of ESL instructors is often difficult, given the limited resources of most programs. In ESL, a close study of classroom discourse has long been considered particularly useful, but undirected classroom observation is of limited use because what novices notice in the classroom is often inaccurate or irrelevant. Ways are needed to focus beginning teachers' observations. Over several decades, discourse analysts have devised methods …

Academic Freedom And The Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary Experience, 1979-1989, James Benson Johnson Ii Jan 1994

Academic Freedom And The Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary Experience, 1979-1989, James Benson Johnson Ii

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

As fundamentalist-conservatives pressed their agenda in Southern Baptist Convention life, and, in particular, as they assumed a majority on the board of trustees of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina, the academic freedom of the Southeastern faculty became an issue. Concerns enunciated by Robert M. MacIver (1955) provide reference points in responding to the inquiry: "Was the academic freedom of the faculty violated at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary?" While a prologue and epilogue are offered, the study parameters of the Southeastern Seminary experience are 1979 to 1989. The study concludes that academic freedom was compromised in this …

The Regulation Of Teaching : Lessons From The National Schools Project, Max Angus Jan 1994

The Regulation Of Teaching : Lessons From The National Schools Project, Max Angus

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

It is conceivable that the present generation of Australian teachers has been engaged in more workplace reform over a longer period of time than any other occupational group. Teachers can recite a near-interminable list of changes to work practices initiated during the 70s and 80s which required revisions of content to be taught, changes in methods of instruction and the introduction of modified patterns of school organisation. Yet the more things change the more they appear the same. The salient features of schools of 20 years ago are salient today - classes of thirty of so students, dominated by teacher …

Research And Development As An Essential Work Practice For Teachers., Sharan Burrow

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Educators who have promoted the societal value of life-long learning must take heart from the growing acceptance by business and industry leaders that career-long education and development is essential for their survivaL This dawning realisation has been prompted by the harsh realities of competitive, global economics. Increasingly business leaders recognise that managers and employees must learn and adapt or contract and shut down. Ironically, much of the tough language of business and industry in regard to essential learnings and understandings (competencies) can be found in documented debate, system reports and teacher discourse of the seventies, a discourse labelled 'soft' by …

"New Production Concepts" And The Reconstruction Of Teacher Education : A Post-Fordist Critique., Susan L. Robertson Jan 1994

"New Production Concepts" And The Reconstruction Of Teacher Education : A Post-Fordist Critique., Susan L. Robertson

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The purpose of this paper is to critically analyse the reconstruction of teacher education in order to initiate a more systematic debate. To undertake this task, I will first locate the current proposals for the reform of teacher education in a brief historical context, before moving on to outline the proposed changes to teacher education. I will argue that these policy shifts must be understood within the wider post-Fordist debate and that the new production concepts of skilling, reprofessionalism and task integration provide a useful basis on which the current restructuring proposals. I will conclude my analysis by arguing that while …
