Oral Reading, Silent Reading, And Listening Comprehension: A Comparative Study For Above-Average And Below-Average Readers, Rita M. Joost Jan 1980

Oral Reading, Silent Reading, And Listening Comprehension: A Comparative Study For Above-Average And Below-Average Readers, Rita M. Joost

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

By comparing listening comprehension to reading comprehension for above-average and below-average readers, one can come to some conclusions about where the problem resides for poor readers-whether it be lack of phonic skills or lack of general verbal competence. Because teachers need to know better where to invest their resources, investigations such as mine need to be done.

Reading Attitudes Across A Broad Age Spectrum, Edward J. Dwyer, Flora Joy Jan 1980

Reading Attitudes Across A Broad Age Spectrum, Edward J. Dwyer, Flora Joy

ETSU Faculty Works

Children with parents who demonstrate a highly positive attitude toward reading and who read to their children generally profit from instruction when they begin learning to read and also enjoy considerable success (Durkin, 1966; McCormack, 1977). On the other hand, a review of current research indicates that there is little information available which demonstrates how school-age children as well as adults say they feel about reading. Further, Zirkel and Greene (1976) suggested that "there is a paucity of verbal self-report instruments in the reading attitude assessment area" (p. 107).

Keeping A Clozed Mind On Reading, Edward J. Dwyer

ETSU Faculty Works

The "doze informal" contains a series of graded passages which presents reading instructors with a method for matching students with appropriate instructional materials. In the "cloze informal", students' scores are obtained from performance on a series of cloze passages. Scores can be used to assess …

The Ses And Current Seminary Student Statements: A Descriptive Study, Cory William Bangerter Jan 1980

The Ses And Current Seminary Student Statements: A Descriptive Study, Cory William Bangerter

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to show that the present Student Evaluation of Seminary (SES) provides the seminary teacher with an inadequate estimate of his credibility in the classroom, as perceived by his students. To accomplish this goal, a list of student responses to questions about their seminary teachers was developed and analyzed. The results indicated that not all factors of teacher credibility as perceived by the seminary students were being measured by the SES.

Thirty-one students gave a total of 339 responses to the questions asked by the researcher. A comparison of the student statements to statements in …

The Early Development Of Quantitative Cognition: Correspondences And One-Way Functions, Irvin Sam Schonfeld Jan 1980

The Early Development Of Quantitative Cognition: Correspondences And One-Way Functions, Irvin Sam Schonfeld

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This investigation was designed to examine the development of the child's capacity to make numerical and quantitative comparisons. It was hypothesized that the nature of the child's understanding of correspondences and one-way functions informs his capacity to compare arrays of decals and quantities of liquid. The relation of Piagetian operative level to the child's capacity to use crystallized skills, or solution aids (Cattell, 1963; Horn, 1968), in comparing arrays was also investigated.

A total of 171 children who ranged in age from four to seven years were administered numerical and liquid comparison tasks. The numerical tasks included paired arrays of …

Curriculum Development For Cooperative Education, Ann Ferris

Masters Theses

The Cooperative Education program at Lake Land College strives to provide training for students in any vocational/technical career. This is accomplished by individualizing curriculum plans using courses available on campus and securing a training station for them in local business or industrial establishments. Title VIII funding for the school year 1979 - 80 provided an opportunity to develop curriculum packages for ten of the most requested career areas. These ten areas were identified by using current students' career choices as well as by examining the records of past Cooperative Education students.

Commercial vocational material catalogs, educational curriculum guides, and the …

Chapter one involves my meeting with Mr. Louis Christen, Director of Coles County Extension Service. During the interview, he described the history, function and …
