The Development And Evaluation Of A Confluent Language Arts Program, Carolyn J. Nave Dec 1980

The Development And Evaluation Of A Confluent Language Arts Program, Carolyn J. Nave

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The growing interest in the self-concept as a factor to learning and the idea of confluence as a possible motivator for building positive self-concepts influenced the direction and intention of this study. The problem of this study was (1) to develop a confluent language arts program designed to improve the self-concepts and reading achievement of students; and (2) to determine if there were increases in self-concept and reading achievement scores after participation in the program. The development of the confluent language arts program involved the following process: (1) theory formation to give substance and structure to the literature-language lessons; (2) …

A Field Test Of A Reading Program Needs Assessment Strategy, Linda Jane Howard Vingelen Aug 1980

A Field Test Of A Reading Program Needs Assessment Strategy, Linda Jane Howard Vingelen

Dissertations

This dissertation described a needs assessment model for a reading program and described the field testing of that model. The needs assessment model was a strategy for conducting a comprehensive and systematic assessment of reading program needs in kindergarten through Grade 12. The model could be used as a basis for educational program planning by a director of reading and a school superintendent. A model for conducting a reading program needs assessment was conceived and field tested because there were few available needs assessment models in reading which have been field tested. Field testing was particularly vital because only after …

An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Required Homework Review Versus Review On Request Upon Achievement, Dolores Dick Jul 1980

An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Required Homework Review Versus Review On Request Upon Achievement, Dolores Dick

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

During the 1979-80 school year, two Algebra I classes were involved in a study to test the effects of two methods for reviewing homework problems on students' achievements and attitudes. One review procedure was to solve and explain each problem during the class period that followed the class period in which the homework assignment had been made. The other procedure involved solving and explaining only the problems that students requested to have reviewed. While one procedure was being used with one class, the other procedure was being used with the comparison class. One treatment procedure was used with a class …

The Assessment Of Consumer Awareness Of Adults, Virginia Anne Haldeman Dickinson May 1980

The Assessment Of Consumer Awareness Of Adults, Virginia Anne Haldeman Dickinson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The assessment of consumer awareness is important to: 1) identify awareness needs of adults, 2) design programs to meet those needs, and 3) assess changes in consumer awareness as a result of participation in such programs. A search of the literature failed to identify an instrument using recall rather than recognition to assess adult consumer awareness of sources of product/service information, existing consumer protection laws, and possible channels of recourse.

The purpose of this research was to develop a reliable and valid instrument to measure the consumer awareness of adults. The test development study involved 32 respondents from one pre-existing …

Revolution By Evolution: The Needed Graduate Response To Undergraduate Social Work Education, Roger A. Lohmann Mar 1980

Revolution By Evolution: The Needed Graduate Response To Undergraduate Social Work Education, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This paper is an assessment of the state of the art of graduate social work curricula with particular reference to the lag of such curriculum in responding to the maturation of undergraduate social work education. Advanced standing programs, it is suggested, offer a purely administrative solution to the curriculum question posed by the new continuum of social work education. An ad hoc trial and error problem-solving strategy is called for, on the basis of four assumptions: the primary of the BSW curriculum; and the advanced, specialized and applied science character of graduate social work.

Home Interaction Program: Hip, Georgia Sackman

All Graduate Projects

A Home Interaction Program (HIP) was designed and implemented for Title I parents and students. The components of the program included monthly newsletters, libraries, and workshops. It was found that parents of Title I students participated in HIP activities as long as they could be done in the home. The conclusion was reached that if schools want Title I parents to become involved in their child's education learning experiences, programs must be developed to reach into the home.

Textbook Selection Process: An Historical Account Of The Steps Involved In Textbook Selection Guidelines For Washington State Public Schools, James D. Shannon

All Graduate Projects

Local schools and school districts in the State of Washington have the responsibility for selecting textbooks to meet the district's philosophies, goals, and objectives as well as state regulations. To eliminate some of the problems inherent in this situation and to ensure more satisfactory results, this writer developed a procedure based on a committee approach, using a participatory decision making mode. Also, evaluative criteria and a rating tool were designed for use in screening, evaluating, and selecting textbooks. This project presents the steps used in the process.

Learning From Animals: Models For Studying Physiology And Disease, W. Jean Dodds Jan 1980

Learning From Animals: Models For Studying Physiology And Disease, W. Jean Dodds

Education Collection

Animals can serve as valuable educational tools for elementary and high school students. By teaching young people reverence for all forms of life at an early age, it is possible to instill in them a proper perspective concerning the welfare and humane stewardship of animals. Exemplary subjects include the various aspects of evolutionary and embryological development; normal physiological processes, the mechanisms and pathology of naturally occurring infectious, metabolic, genetic and neoplastic diseases and aging; and an appreciation of the inevitability of death. Such studies can serve as learning models for students because these processes parallel or closely resemble those of …

Relationships Between School Desegregation And Government Housing Programs: A Milwaukee Case Study, Lois M. Quinn, Michael G. Barndt, Diane S. Pollard Jan 1980

Relationships Between School Desegregation And Government Housing Programs: A Milwaukee Case Study, Lois M. Quinn, Michael G. Barndt, Diane S. Pollard

ETI Publications

School desegregation was initiated in Milwaukee in the 1976-77 school year through a court-ordered city desegregation program and a state-financed city-suburban pupil transfer program. This pilot study by the Metropolitan Integration Research Center explored three dimensions of the complex interrelationships between these school desegregation programs and housing patterns in Milwaukee County. First, a field study explored the attitudes of minority families participating in the innovative city-suburban school desegregation program. The survey found high satisfaction with the educational program and relatively strong interest in possible integrating housing moves to suburban areas where children were busing to school. Secondly, the pupil movement …
