An Analysis Of The Attitudes Of Selected Public School Educators In Tennessee Toward Minimum Competency Testing, Judy A. Walters
An Analysis Of The Attitudes Of Selected Public School Educators In Tennessee Toward Minimum Competency Testing, Judy A. Walters
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem was to determine whether significant relationships exist in the attitudes of eighth-grade teachers, their principals, and their superintendents toward minimum competency testing in Tennessee. Literature was reviewed in order to determine the problems associated with the implementation of a minimum competency testing program. Questionnaires were developed to obtain the attitudes of teachers, principals, and superintendents about the questions most often encountered in the literature. School systems to be surveyed were selected by stratified random sampling from defined pupil enrollment categories after the questionnaires were field tested. Superintendents from 36 public school systems were identified to receive questionnaires and …
A Comparison Of Three Operational Definitions Of Job Satisfaction, Thomas J. Kuieck
A Comparison Of Three Operational Definitions Of Job Satisfaction, Thomas J. Kuieck
Dissertations
The major purpose of the study was to provide to educational leaders information pertinent to the selection of job satisfaction instruments. The Need Satisfaction Questionnaire created by Porter, as modified by Trusty and Sergiovanni, and the Quality of Employment Job Satisfaction Survey developed by personnel from the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan were compared with the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire developed by Weiss, Dawis, England, and Lofquist to investigate the concurrent validity of the instruments. The study focused primarily on the psychometric aspects of the Need Satisfaction Questionnaire, an instrument used by earlier investigators to assess individuals' …

An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Required Homework Review Versus Review On Request Upon Achievement, Dolores Dick
An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Required Homework Review Versus Review On Request Upon Achievement, Dolores Dick
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
During the 1979-80 school year, two Algebra I classes were involved in a study to test the effects of two methods for reviewing homework problems on students' achievements and attitudes. One review procedure was to solve and explain each problem during the class period that followed the class period in which the homework assignment had been made. The other procedure involved solving and explaining only the problems that students requested to have reviewed. While one procedure was being used with one class, the other procedure was being used with the comparison class. One treatment procedure was used with a class …

A Study Of Significant Differences In Values, Problems & Personality Characteristics Of English 055 Students & English 101 Students At Western Kentucky University, Nancy Moore
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Fifty students from English 055 and 50 students from English 101 were given the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule, the Mooney Problem Check Lists, the Allport/ Vernon/Lindzey Study of Values, and the Willoughby Schedule to determine if any significant differences existed between the two groups in the areas of personality characteristics, values, or problems. A statistical analysis of the results was determined by means of a t value from a separate variance estimate. Results indicated that significant differences existed between the 055 students and the 101 students in the following areas: self-esteem, economic values, need for achievement, and …

A Field Study Of Goal-Based And Goal-Free Evaluation Techniques, John W. Evers
A Field Study Of Goal-Based And Goal-Free Evaluation Techniques, John W. Evers
Dissertations
Educational evaluation theorists propose two methodologies that could be used to assess a project or program's achievements. One method is well established and is called goal-based evaluation. The other has been proposed recently and is called goal-free evaluation. Little information exists about goal-free evaluation in field settings. The problem to be addressed was: What would be the results of a field study that compared the relative utility of operationalized versions of goal-free and goal-based evaluation techniques? The perspective selected to investigate this problem was evaluator/evaluee interactions. This study had two objectives: (1) to develop materials and procedures for using the …
A Comparison Of The Admission Criteria Of Kentucky's Junior Colleges, Janet Walters
A Comparison Of The Admission Criteria Of Kentucky's Junior Colleges, Janet Walters
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Students intending to enter a Junior College in Kentucky can learn of the admission requirements from the catalog published by that college. However, admission requirements vary between colleges. Each admission requirement of Kentucky's Junior Colleges was ranked in terms of its importance to the admission process by admission counselors. It was found that the high school transcript was felt by a majority of the admission counselors to be the most important admission requirement presently used. The partial high school transcript and recommendation form or letter were deemed to be the least important criteria. The results of the evaluation further indicated …

A Study Guide For Eigth Grade Developmental Reading Based On Cooper And Petrosky's Strategies, Barbara Ann Trezise
All Graduate Projects
A study guide, to increase students' ability to use study skills, to read expository and narrative material with greater fluency, and to maintain positive attitudes towards reading, was developed using Cooper and Petrosky's (1976) "A Psycholinguistic View of the Fluent Reading Process." Sequential lessons were designed from available printed materials. A pre/post test attitude scale, study habits survey, and standardized reading achievement tests were administered. Modified miscue analysis provided diagnostic information.

Textbook Selection Process: An Historical Account Of The Steps Involved In Textbook Selection Guidelines For Washington State Public Schools, James D. Shannon
All Graduate Projects
Local schools and school districts in the State of Washington have the responsibility for selecting textbooks to meet the district's philosophies, goals, and objectives as well as state regulations. To eliminate some of the problems inherent in this situation and to ensure more satisfactory results, this writer developed a procedure based on a committee approach, using a participatory decision making mode. Also, evaluative criteria and a rating tool were designed for use in screening, evaluating, and selecting textbooks. This project presents the steps used in the process.

This project consisted of developing a series of inservice classes designed to train the teachers to better utilize the overhead, opaque, slide, filmstrip, and 16mm projectors, tape recorders, VTR, microfiche reader/printer, and dry mount press. Appropriate examples have been produced in each medium and a tool created for the evaluation of the inservice program.
The Effects Of A Perceptual-Motor Physical Education Program On Reading Skill Level Of First-Grade Students, Melinda Kaye Allen
The Effects Of A Perceptual-Motor Physical Education Program On Reading Skill Level Of First-Grade Students, Melinda Kaye Allen
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
For many years, educators have been intrigued and concerned with the relationships that exist between a child's physical development and cognitive development. Even though some researchers and authors have reported that improvement in motor ability in young children is accompanied by improvement in cognitive ability, others have found no significant relationships between these two parameters. Therefore, the research to date has generated both excitement and skepticism, resulting in increased interest in the development of perceptual-motor training programs, as well as renewed commitment to traditional physical education programs.
Grades, Grading, And The Law, Nicholas George Evans
Grades, Grading, And The Law, Nicholas George Evans
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The problem is to devise for institutions of higher learning a model policy regarding grades and grading practices, specifically with respect to (1) grade appeal procedures, including instructor rights and student rights; (2) methods of determining grades; (3) definitions of grades; (4) responsibility for assigning grades; and (5) cheating regulations insofar as they affect grading policies. A model policy should assist colleges and universities in achieving conformity with recent court decisions and avoiding the many problems associated with litigation. At the same time, institutions should then be able to maintain their academic standards and provide academic fairness for all students. …
