The Preparation Of A Student Handbook, Kenneth L. Miller Jan 1979

The Preparation Of A Student Handbook, Kenneth L. Miller

Masters Theses

The purpose of the field study project was to develop a functional student handbook for use at Crestwood School in Paris, Illinois. Crestwood School is a kindergarten through 8th grade elementary school and the initial intention was to produce a handbook for use at all nine grade levels. This project became, then, the production of the handbook for the middle school (6-8) grades.

Retention In Salem Elementary Schools, Charles M. Raglin Jan 1979

Retention In Salem Elementary Schools, Charles M. Raglin

Masters Theses

Social or chronological promotion has long been a practice of the public schools of the United States. The alternative, nonpromotion or retention, has in the opinion of most psychologists and sociologists led to emotional and sociological trauma for the child. Another and probably the most cogent objection, is many parents oppose nonpromotion and are unwilling to accept the social stigma of "flunking." Children's achievement is a status symbol which profoundly affects families in many communities.

The writer contends that unless parents are directly involved in the decision early in the nonpromotion year, retention will not culminate in satisfactory achievement. Cooperation …

An Outline Of The Procedures To Reduce Budget Expenditures In The Edwards County Community Unit School District No. 1 For The 1978-79 Fiscal Year, Gary J. Schurz

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to discover ways to reduce expenditures in the budget of the Edwards County Community Unit School District No. 1 for the 1978-79 fiscal year in the light of a projected loss of revenues complicated by inflationary trends.

The need arose due to three factors:

  1. A loss of a portion of the district's state aid due to a previous overpayment.
  2. A rise in the assessed valuation which would mean an additional loss of state aid: It was projected that local monies collected would not offset the loss of state aid.
  3. Spiraling inflation was creating an …

Black Attitudes Towards Social Affiliation With Whites And Its Influence On Academic Achievement, Alvin Finderson Jan 1979

Black Attitudes Towards Social Affiliation With Whites And Its Influence On Academic Achievement, Alvin Finderson

Masters Theses

If blacks are to compete successfully in white academia, they must be able to communicate and interact with white students and professors. Acceptance of middle-class white students with an academic achievement orientation, as friends and equals, should enable or assist blacks in developing positive attitudes toward academic achievement. This in turn should positively affect scholastic performance. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between black attitudes toward social affiliation with whites and successful academic performance on integrated campuses.

This hypothesis was tested by measuring the association between black self-reported grade point averages and their responses to an …

The Role Of Women In Tanzania: Their Access To Higher Education And Participation In The Labour Force, Asayehgn Desta Dec 1978

The Role Of Women In Tanzania: Their Access To Higher Education And Participation In The Labour Force, Asayehgn Desta

Asayehgn Desta

A self-administered questionnaire given to 526 postsecondary students and 424 employed university graduates provides data on the participation of Tanzanian women in higher education and in the work force. Research shows that Tanzanian women students are more likely than men to come from more developed regions, reside in urban areas, have relatively well-educated and highly paid parents in professional or administrative occupations, and be enrolled in courses that reflect stereotypical ideas of women's role. Though women initially earn as much as men, they wait longer for initial employment, and pay differentials between the sexes increase over time in favor of …
