The Effect Of A Planned Parent Education Program Upon The Young Child's Cognitive And Affective Development And The Prime Caregiver's Assessment Of Child Behavior, Jean T. Scogin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem was to determine the extent a selected parent education program influenced the oognitive and affective development of educationally deprived Appalachian pre-school children and to determine to what extent the program influenced the prime caregivers' assessment of the child's behavior. Subjects included 40 Appalachian prime caregivers and their children who participated in four intact home-based classes. They were randomly assigned to treatment by the teacher, in order to equate the home visitor case load. In the Experimental Group, prime caregivers were provided with resources developed from the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) program. Control Group prime caregivers participated …

Selected Language Tests And Reading Ability, Dale Leavesley Melada Oct 1979

Selected Language Tests And Reading Ability, Dale Leavesley Melada

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

he ability to communicate effectively in oral language precedes the ability to create and interpret language in its written form. Some research studies have shown that reading is a language based activity, but the problem is that little has been done with the knowledge of language and language competencies children bring to school, especially those children who read early or before they come to school. Insights into the ways in which children use language at various stages of their development would greatly assist teachers and parents in fostering both oral language competence and the ability to read and write.

Qualifications Needed By Teachers Of English: Ratings By English Curriculum Coordinators And English Educators, Eugenia Porretta Miller Oct 1979

Qualifications Needed By Teachers Of English: Ratings By English Curriculum Coordinators And English Educators, Eugenia Porretta Miller

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

A new climate of teaching has been established in which English teachers must be able to demonstrate those teacher behaviors, characteristics and qualifications that foster high quality instruction in the classroom.

The 1976 National Council of Teachers of English's (NCTE) Committee on Teacher Preparation and Certification published a statement on "Qualifications Needed by Teachers of English." These qualifications, based on an earlier set of Guidelines in 1967, suggested desirable competencies for teachers of English. The latest qualifications prepared by the NCTE Committee on Teacher Preparation and Certification represented progress from the generalities of previous efforts to a set of specific …

The Antecedents And Consequences Of Organizational Crisis In A Voluntary Professional Organization, James Paul Miller Aug 1979

The Antecedents And Consequences Of Organizational Crisis In A Voluntary Professional Organization, James Paul Miller

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This study investigated two instances of organizational crisis occurring within a voluntary professional organization. The central research task was twofold: (1) to reconstruct accurately the historical events which preceded and followed two unsuccessful strike bids by a voluntary teachers' organization; and, (2) to develop a theoretical explanation which would account for the antecedents and consequences of the crises which inevitably surfaced after the strike bid defeat. Concepts drawn primarily from the organizational crisis and conflict literature provided the general conceptual orientation.

A large urban teachers' organization in the Southwestern United States was chosen as the research site. Due to the …

Head Start Four And Five Year Old Children’S Attitudes Toward School As They Are Related To Achievement, Eugene Smith

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine if there existed significant relationships between 4 and 5 year old children’s attitude toward school, their classroom teacher’s perception of their attitude toward school, length of time in school, sex, or a composite of these with their achievement on the Pre-School Attainment Record. A random sample of 55 Head Start children completed three instruments. The instruments used in this study were a revised Children’s Attitude Toward School Scale (CATSS-R), (Beere, 1970) The Pre-School Attainment Record (PAR), (Doll, 1966) and the Teachers Rating of Attitude of Children Toward School (TRACTS). Mathematics In The Christian Philosophy Of Life, C. Ralph Verno Jun 1979

Mathematics In The Christian Philosophy Of Life, C. Ralph Verno

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1979

It is universally agreed that mathematics is important, that it is indeed very significant in life. This would be admitted even by those who are ignorant of or who dislike mathematics. There would be much less agreement, however, about why mathematics is important or significant. Such disagreement exists even more among mathematicians and mathematics educators. Unhappily many of the Christians who think about such things (and there are not very many who think about them at all) basically share the utilitarian view of many non-Christian thinkers, although endeavoring to place it within a Christian context. They think it is wonderful …

Brief Position Paper For Panel Discussion On Relation Of Mathematics And Christianity, C. Ralph Verno Jun 1979

Brief Position Paper For Panel Discussion On Relation Of Mathematics And Christianity, C. Ralph Verno

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1979

Some people view a conjoining of Christianity and Mathematics as improper. They miss the point of the relationship. The content of mathematics is not affected by Christianity. The relationship does not concern what, or how (the Christian doesn’t solve equations or differentiate differently), but it concerns why. It concerns such things as the interpretation and appreciation of the beauty, the symmetries, the coincidences, the remarkable properties, man’s creative role, etc. This paper explores the relationship between Christianity and mathematics as part of a panel discussion on the topic.

An Analysis Of Population Changes In Eastern Kentucky 1970-2000, Gary C. Cox Jun 1979

An Analysis Of Population Changes In Eastern Kentucky 1970-2000, Gary C. Cox

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Accurate population projections are essential for anyone engaged in long-range planning. Predicting future population trends any considerable distance into the future, however, is a notoriously risky undertaking. So many human variables are involved that all too frequently such projections make a mockery of the demographer's best efforts. Regardless of how sophisticated are the statistical models used, long-range population forcasting is statistical guessing with a fairly wide margin of error. Eastern Kentucky and Central Appalachia, in general, present an especially formidable challenge. Since the beginning of the 20th Century the economy of the region has been tied to one product, coal, …

Intuitionism, Terence H. Perciante Jun 1979

Intuitionism, Terence H. Perciante

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1979

Intuitionism derives philosophically from Kant's Conceptualism -- the object of the mathematical knowledge only have reality within the mind, they do not have reality apart from our thinking. This paper examines the nature of intuitionism and its strengths.

Axiomatic Structure And The Method Of Analysis: Shifting Styles In The History Of Mathematics, Calvin Jongsma Jun 1979

Axiomatic Structure And The Method Of Analysis: Shifting Styles In The History Of Mathematics, Calvin Jongsma

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1979

This article surveys the different views of mathematical methodology that occurred from ancient Greek times through the early modern period up until its codification around 1900. After summarizing the axiomatic approach advocated by Aristotle and implemented in mathematics by Euclid, the talk explores the character of analysis in ancient Greek times, its development into a symbolic algebra by Viete and Descartes, and its expansion into a calculus of fluxions and differentials by Newton and Leibniz. The article concludes by touching on the recovery and transformation of the deductive ideal for mathematics by Pasch, Peano, and Hilbert during the late nineteenth …

Two Philosophical Problems About Mathematics, Stephen Barker Jun 1979

Two Philosophical Problems About Mathematics, Stephen Barker

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1979

Mathematics is a flourishing field of human endeavor, a field that is accorded great respect and high standing. For 2500 years or more, many of the best minds available have worked in this field; and the results produced have indirectly been of enormous value to other fields, such as physics, engineering, architecture, economics, and so on. But with is mathematics about? Physics studies moving bodies; engineering studies bridges; architecture studies buildings; economics studies commercial behavior: here there are phenomena we can point to that constitute the subject matter. But what does mathematics study? If you answer “Numbers”, or “Abstract types …

Expectations For Teacher Role Behavior In A Multi-Cultural Community, George Michael Perreault Apr 1979

Expectations For Teacher Role Behavior In A Multi-Cultural Community, George Michael Perreault

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

Statement of the Problem

American public schools have been criticized for failing to meet the needs of children from minority groups. The cultural heritage of these children is seen as an important factor in differential achievement in the public schools. It has been postulated that students and adults from different cultural groups would hold different expectations for teachers, and this would hinder the chances of minority students to benefit from Anglo-oriented schools. However, there is little empirical evidence regarding expectations teacher role behavior held by minority students or teachers.

Reading Enrichment Materials For Teaching Borderline Students, Katie M. Jackson Jan 1979

Reading Enrichment Materials For Teaching Borderline Students, Katie M. Jackson

All Graduate Projects

Borderline students are always the students who seem to go unnoticed in the classroom. The students' reading levels are not high enough to function at grade level and not low enough to get the extra assistance from the Reading Specialist in the assigned building. Often the students are given just enough reading material to keep them busy.

A reading enrichment program, developed through the use of learning packets and supplemental books, is designed to help alleviate some of the problems these students experience in reading. The learning packet materials were selected to encourage students to appreciate books, learn to read …
