Technique Of Instruction And Comparative Results For Classes Of One Hundred In Mathematics, Clifford E. Trueblood

Graduate Thesis Collection

The purpose in this thesis is to present the technique established in teaching classes of one hundred (80-120) in mathematics and to compare the student progress with the progress made by those in small classes of the entire department. In this study the pupils have not been assigned, either to the large class (100) or the small classes (35), in any special way. In every instance, the assignment to classes has been to suit the pupil's program or the programs of the school. In other words, there has been no attempt to assign special pupils to special classes for the …

An Introductory Course In The Reading Of Simple Graphic And Statistical Material For Use In Junior High Schools, Annie Mckenzie Jan 1930

An Introductory Course In The Reading Of Simple Graphic And Statistical Material For Use In Junior High Schools, Annie Mckenzie

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the stories of olden times and in those of our own American Indians, we learned of the picture writing of primitive peoples. It became an early method of recording people's thoughts. This was a very useful method at a time when the race was young. This in turn was the beginning of our alphabet, later the beginning of shaping letters into words, and then word into sentences and paragraphs. As our world has grown older, new idea have come into use and we are no longer content to live as our grandparents lived. We travel by fast express trains, …

Particular effort will be made to trace the establishment and the progress of the schools during these periods and to determine the methods of maintenance, as well as the nature of the schools. Also, an attempt will be made to determine to what extent education in New Mexico was of a religious nature and linked with the history of the …

A Survey Of Progressive Education And Its Application To Certain Schools Of California, William Wells Pratchner

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A new idea of education is upon us and if we are to achieve a civilization based upon justice and cooperation, realization of a greater personal freedom and the accomplishment of a fuller democracy, education must pave the way.

Before this goal can be fully realized, fundamental changes and adjustments must be accomplished in our social and industrial life. A new education will be one of the most potent factors in the reshaping of our national character. This education must be one that will truly equip men and women with knowledge, inspiration, and power necessary to build new institutions, and …

Truancy As A Factor In The Delinquency Of Boys : A Case-Study Of 300 Boys In The Preston School Of Industry At Ione, California, And Comparisons With The Truancy Problem Of The Sacramento City Schools, V. Pierpont Husband

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The study of a question such as that of Truancy must be undertaken on the basis of statistics. It is essentially a matter of investigating and gathering data upon individual cases.

The preliminary search for material upon the subject revealed the fact that practically nothing had been written upon it and apparently little inquiry made into the problem. Accordingly, the writer obtained permission from Superintendent O.H. Close of the Preston School of Industry located at Ione, Amador County, California to conduct an investigation of this problem among the delinquent boys committed to that institution. This school is the state correctional …

The Nature Of Method, Emma H. Mater Aug 1929

The Nature Of Method, Emma H. Mater

Bachelors’ Theses

The child, the learner, as the center of interest around which the materials of development group themselves, is a primary concept of the new school. Experience, is the keynote. According to Rugg & Shumaker (1), the aims of the new education are two-fold, maximum growth in creative self-expression on one hand, and tolerant understanding of self and of society on the other. Freedom, pupil initiative, the active school, with the essential element of child interest, are the articles of faith of the new educational program. Experience, the complete integrated life of the individual, must go on in a thoroughly integrated …

The Educational Value Of Christian Doctrine, M. Scholastica Walters Aug 1929

The Educational Value Of Christian Doctrine, M. Scholastica Walters

Bachelors’ Theses

This short thesis is offered with the hope of strengthening the belief that there can be no true education without moral training, and that the moral training without the religious is incomplete, and at times even proves baneful. It is incomplete in as much as vices lead to undermine the physical constitution and to blind the intellect, weaken the faculties and harden the heart; baneful, for intellectual development, without morality, may become a snare and a temptation to virtue.

Phonics A General Survey Of The Subject, Mary Rosalie Aug 1929

Phonics A General Survey Of The Subject, Mary Rosalie

Bachelors’ Theses

"Phonics is a term usually applied to the study of sounds as they are related to reading." Its aim is to give the child power in the independent recognition of words, therefore, a knowledge of the use of phonics has always been considered a necessary part of the primary teacher's equipment, and probably no question has been more widely asked in the field of primary reading, than, "How and when shall phonics be taught?"

Supervised Study, Alice L. Priestley Jul 1929

Supervised Study, Alice L. Priestley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in 1929, examines supervised study as an instructional method and argues for its superiority over traditional recitation-based teaching. Priestley traces the historical development of the teaching function through three stages, from the teacher as disciplinarian, through an emphasis on psychologizing instruction, to the contemporary movement toward directing and supervising pupils' independent learning activities.

The thesis reviews a series of experimental studies comparing supervised study to conventional recitation and home study methods, including investigations by Reavis, Richard, Hill-Quest, Breslich, Minnich, and Brown and Worthington, conducted across subjects including algebra, plane geometry, arithmetic, and poetry at …

The Teaching Of Reading Affords One Of The Greatest Opportunities For The Development Of Character In The Junior High School, Dolores O. Johnson Jul 1929

The Teaching Of Reading Affords One Of The Greatest Opportunities For The Development Of Character In The Junior High School, Dolores O. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University of Louisiana in 1929, argues that reading instruction in the junior high grades should be oriented toward character development rather than mechanical skill alone. Johnson distinguishes between oral and silent reading, contending that silent reading had been comparatively neglected in schools despite making up the bulk of reading done outside the classroom, and examines factors affecting reading rate and comprehension, including vocalization, lip movement, and purposeful practice.

The thesis also addresses the use of literature to build character and citizenship, recommending variety in reading material, the use of class discussion and oral recitation to …

The Present Status Of Teacher Tenure In Indiana, George D. Goodnight

Graduate Thesis Collection

Within recent years the problem of tenure of teachers has received its due share of attention from the leading educational authorities, many of whom have written upon the subject. By the expression, "tenure of teachers", used in this dissertation and in the works of present day writers of educational theory, we mean the security of position of teachers, provided for them either by local board rulings or by laws enacted by state legislatures.

Cooperation Between The Home And The School In The Matter Of Hygiene Of Children, Theodore C. Klett Jun 1929

Cooperation Between The Home And The School In The Matter Of Hygiene Of Children, Theodore C. Klett

Bachelors’ Theses

In attempting to improve the health habits of the child, little can be accomplished without the interest and cooperation of the home, in which the habits will be practiced. The establishment of an intimate understanding between the school and home goes far towards producing the desired results; and, again, while we may be making. progress by the mere preaching of the gospel of hygiene to the child, the child cannot reform his own ways and revolutionize family traditions without the cooperation of the parents. Important from every point ·of view has been the taking of the parents into the confidence …

Safety Education In The Elementary School, Julia Alice Sheehan Jun 1929

Safety Education In The Elementary School, Julia Alice Sheehan

Bachelors’ Theses

In modern civilization we find numerous and varied hazards, without a sufficient knowledge to combat the startling increase of accidents caused by these hazards. In the United States six per cent to the deaths are due to carelessness. The number of American soldiers, who made the supreme sacrifice in Europe during the nineteen months that our country was in the World War, was 77,118. Statistics of the United States Census Bureau show, in the death registration area of the United States during the twelve months of the year 1920, the number of violent deaths, exclusive of suicide, was 68,697. According …

The Nervous Child, Miriam Wolfson Jun 1929

The Nervous Child, Miriam Wolfson

Bachelors’ Theses

Nervousness is not, as it is commonly thought, a disease of the nerves from the physical point of view. It is rather a functional disorder affecting the patient as a whole, especially mentally. Nervousness may be described as an excessive activity of the nervous system, resulting in a peculiar type of response to the ordinary stimuli of life and showing itself in such symptoms as over activity, temper, irritability or restlessness.

Education Through Recreation, Marjory C. Wolf Jun 1929

Education Through Recreation, Marjory C. Wolf

Bachelors’ Theses

"All work and no play will make Jack a dull boy." Educators throughout the world to-day are beginning to realize the significance of said words. Shorter working hours, and the demand for mechanical power and devices, is increasing leisure very rapidly. It is just as necessary to prepare for the leisure time of life as it is for the work time of life, and what the great mass of people will do during their leisure time is the problem we are concerned with. When not at work one must choose between play and idleness - and Carlyle says, "Nine-tenths of …
