Teaching Social Studies From A Global Viewpoint, Janet Hays Clemmer

Dissertations and Theses

The need for preparing our youth to live in an interdependent world on this finite planet has become urgent since the beginning of the nuclear age at the end of World War II. There is a need to extend the loyalty of the citizen tor the nation-state to human needs seen from a global view. The involvement of the United States in the international community already is extensive because of its predominant power. This involvement is not reflected in our education, either from the amount of time devoted to social studies in our schools or in the emphasis on international …

A Comparative Investigation Of The Relationship Between Algebra Grades And Differential Aptitude Test Subtests To Geometry Grades, Barbara Jean Southall

Master's Theses

THE PROBLEM AND OBJECTIVES

Counselors and teachers have long wanted a system to predict a student's probable level of achievement in the next higher course. This has been especially true in the academic areas such as English and mathematics. To do so involves many factors and the attempt has not yet proven successful.

THE PROBLEM

After three years of teaching both Algebra II and Trigonometry, and Fused Geometry, the author has become aware of the need for predicting a student's probable level of achievement in the next higher mathematics course. This is particularly true when colleges may be more selective …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Teaching A Twelfth Grade Government And Sociology Class In An Environment Saturated With Study Trips And Resourcespeakers With The Effects Of A Traditional Course In Government And Sociology When Both Are Offered In A Voluntary Summer School Program, Edward Botton Morrison

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The intent of the concentrated summer school program offered in Sacramento was to create a “saturated environment” in which the study of government would become participation in government in action rather than the study about government. The question posed was: Will instruction in government carried out in an environment saturated with study trips and resource speakers prove a more effective method for preparing twelfth grade students for citizenship than is instruction in a traditional government class?

The experimental approach was approved by the school district and was scheduled for implementation during the summer session of 1969 at one high school …

This paper surveys research on the factors that influence the readability of primary books, the efforts that have been made to measure it, and the comparative reliability of subjective judgment and objective analysis of the difficulty of certain primary books. An appraisal by the Fry Readability Graph is recommended for a first approximation of the difficulty of a book, to be followed by judgment decisions regarding concepts, interest and other considerations, to make a suitable match of book to child.
