A Study Of The Effects Of A Reading Program For Reluctant Readers, Florence Evelyn Banks

The purpose of this study was to obtain some statistical evidence concerning the effects of a reading program for high school students rated as reluctant readers on their reading habits and attitudes. The initial problem which motivated the study was that assignments to read novels were resisted by this group. The students can read, but do not.

The hypothesis is that if students are given a program with books of 200 pages or less that have in the content some universalities that will satisfy the adult interests of students, attitudes about reading will change and there will be an improvement …

This paper is a correlation study of fourth grade students' scores on the Kottmeyer Diagnostic Spelling Test and the Auditory Feedback Test. The purpose of the paper is to determine if students who are poor spellers have poor auditory discrimination. Recommendations included the use of a spelling test which requires greater auditory discrimination than the Kottmeyer Spelling Test. Also recommended is a correlation study using primary students as the population.

A practice teacher who is suddenly confronted with a senior class of remedial English literature must acknowledge the fact that the approach to literature for these students is through non-book materials. Perhaps the term remedial should be qualified in this instance to define students who have average or almost average intelligence but who have reading difficulties which have been enhanced by fear of books.
