A Factor Analytic Study Of Conceptual Systems Theory And The Genotypic And Phenotypic Characteristics Of Teacher Trainees: Toward The Development Of A Typology, Stanley Augustus France Jr. Jan 1971

A Factor Analytic Study Of Conceptual Systems Theory And The Genotypic And Phenotypic Characteristics Of Teacher Trainees: Toward The Development Of A Typology, Stanley Augustus France Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to attempt to derive and validate a typology of teacher trainees based on Conceptual Systems theory. In order to empirically validate the theoretically derived typology, three steps, each with a different purpose were needed. First, the constructs were operationally defined. Second, the interrelations of the constructs were established. Third, the types were determined as similar to theoretical expectations as possible. The first step was necessitated in more complex form than is usually done because of certain problems associated with the statistical procedures used. The reasons for this step will be more fully developed in the …

An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Compulsory Arithmetic Homework Assignments On The Arithmetic Achievement Of Fifth-Grade Pupils, Eugene Edward Grant Jan 1971

An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Compulsory Arithmetic Homework Assignments On The Arithmetic Achievement Of Fifth-Grade Pupils, Eugene Edward Grant

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The major purpose of the study was to determine the effects of tho assignment of arithmetic homework by the teacher from the textbook, and teacher assigned differentiated homework prepared by the investigator upon the achievement of fifth-grade students as measured by standardized tests of arithmetic computation, concepts, and application. A secondary purpose of the study was to determine whether the assignment of the two forms of homework would have a differential effect upon the achievement for girls and boys and for low and high IQ groups.

Stimulus Selection Under Conditions Of Free Choice By Preschool Children At Baseline And After Adaptation, Andrea Lyn Shields Jan 1971

Stimulus Selection Under Conditions Of Free Choice By Preschool Children At Baseline And After Adaptation, Andrea Lyn Shields

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The experiments reported in the present paper may be characterized as belonging to the general area of motivation research referred to as stimulus selection behavior. Stimulus selection behavior includes curiosity, exploratory, and manipulatory activities. Generally, the research in the area attempts to determine the relation between changes in the stimulus and changes in the measures of approach behavior in the subject (s). In this research, approach behavior is apparently unrelated to organic need conditions. The experiments presented in this paper were designed to determine a preschool child's stimulus preference as he entered the experimental setting, and whether that preference could …

The Role Of Ethnic Identification In Determining Source Credibility Of The Athletic Coach, Thomas Gregory Pucci

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Using a credibility scale that measures authoritativeness and character of a speaker as perceived by his audience, will a statistically significant difference rise where a figure of authority is a member of one ethnic group and those over whom the authority is asserted are members of a second ethnic group?

A related purpose was that guidelines might be developed for the appropriate utilization, selection, preparation, and supervision of paraprofessional workers.

Piaget's Theory As The Basis For The Assessment Of Reading Disability Andsuggested Remediation Through An Adapted Science Curriculum, Vivian Helen Mcprouty Jan 1971

Piaget's Theory As The Basis For The Assessment Of Reading Disability Andsuggested Remediation Through An Adapted Science Curriculum, Vivian Helen Mcprouty

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Piaget's theory suggests that the development of intelligence is related to an ability to perform logical operations. For the child between 7 and 11 years of age, seriation and classification are operational forms of behavior originating in earlier actions. Since seriation and classification are important to the syntax and semantics of language) failure to develop fully operational seriation and classification abilities may result in certain deficits in the child's reading ability. If so, the science curriculum may be useful in facilitating the cognitive growth necessary to success in reading. Recommendations for adapting the science program for remediation conclude the study.

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Teaching A Twelfth Grade Government And Sociology Class In An Environment Saturated With Study Trips And Resourcespeakers With The Effects Of A Traditional Course In Government And Sociology When Both Are Offered In A Voluntary Summer School Program, Edward Botton Morrison Jan 1971

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Teaching A Twelfth Grade Government And Sociology Class In An Environment Saturated With Study Trips And Resourcespeakers With The Effects Of A Traditional Course In Government And Sociology When Both Are Offered In A Voluntary Summer School Program, Edward Botton Morrison

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The intent of the concentrated summer school program offered in Sacramento was to create a “saturated environment” in which the study of government would become participation in government in action rather than the study about government. The question posed was: Will instruction in government carried out in an environment saturated with study trips and resource speakers prove a more effective method for preparing twelfth grade students for citizenship than is instruction in a traditional government class?

The experimental approach was approved by the school district and was scheduled for implementation during the summer session of 1969 at one high school …

The Development Of A Five-Year Budget For The San Joaquin Delta Community College District, Lawrence Albert Dericco Jan 1971

The Development Of A Five-Year Budget For The San Joaquin Delta Community College District, Lawrence Albert Dericco

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The specific problem of this study was to develop a five-year budget for the San Joaquin Delta Community College District. The choice of a five-year budget was made by the administration after studying the advantages and disadvantages of. shorter and longer term budgets. A term of less than five years did not meet the objectives of the college for the building and educational programs. A ten-year budget would necessarily be less accurate, since the longer the projection, the more vague and theoretical it becomes.

The purposes of this study were to: (1) review the literature pertaining to long-range budgeting, (2) …

It was the purpose of this study to develop and examine a pilot program relating reading instruction specifically to course content and to collect data for seeking answers to the following questions:

  1. Can the general reading ability of disabled readers who are considered slow learners be significantly improved by a program emphasizing the development of reading skills in relation to content in two required courses in the ninth grade?
  2. What areas of general reading ability, if any, can be improved by such a program?
  3. Can specific reading skills be improved by such a program?
