Third- to fifth-grade teachers are struggling to teach writing, and research had not addressed how their training to teach writing or their confidence in their ability to use effective strategies to teach writing influences their teaching. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore third- to fifth-grade teachers’ training in writing instruction and their confidence in their ability to use effective strategies to teach writing. The conceptual framework was Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy and Shulman’s theory of pedagogical content knowledge. Participants included nine third- to fifth-grade teachers who had experience teaching writing. Data were collected through semistructured interviews. …

Comparisons Of Impostor Phenomenon Among Nursing Faculty Across Teaching Levels, Teaching Experience, And Gender, Deborah E. Horvath

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Nursing faculty must be effective educators, active nurse researchers, and practicing nurse experts. Feelings of impostor phenomenon (IP), defined as emotions of fraudulence, can lead to faculty deficiencies both as educators and scholars. The purpose of this three-manuscript dissertation, guided by Weiner’s attribution theory, was to determine differences in IP by teaching level, teaching experience, and gender among nursing faculty. A two-tailed t-test was used to analyze data collected from 164 participants who completed the Clance impostor phenomenon scale. Data revealed instructors teaching at the undergraduate level had more feelings of IP than those teaching at the postgraduate and graduate …

The problem addressed in this study was the lack of adopting and incorporating game-based technology assessment tools at two middle schools in Abu Dhabi, UAE, both of which are 1:1 schools. The purpose of this basic qualitative project study was to better …

Veteran K–5 Teachers’ Perceptions Of Implementing Blended Learning As An Innovation For English Language Art Instruction, Faith Lajoy Roberts-Graham

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The phenomenon of interest in this study was veteran K–5 English language arts (ELA) teachers’ perceptions of blended learning as an educational innovation setting and how they perceived the implementation of blended learning into their instructional routine. Blended learning is normally used in higher-level education but is now also used in the K–5 setting. Blended learning requires students to learn in a brick-and-mortar class setting and through online instruction using technology. Existing research on blended learning primarily focuses on the technological aspects and not veteran K–5 ELA teachers’ implementation of blended learning in public elementary schools. The purpose of this …

Technological And Pedagogical Challenges For Teachers During Covid-19, Suzanne Reaid

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractImplementation of a national contingency plan to mitigate the effects of a natural disaster or major health crisis for schools in the United States has been a focus of scholars since the polio epidemic in 1916. While examining the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on education in the United States, researchers demonstrated that online remote instruction was adopted as a temporary answer to school closures, yet teachers were not prepared for this type of teaching. Researchers had yet to identify the technological and pedagogical challenges for teachers who taught remotely during the crises with little distance education experience. The purpose …

The purpose of this study was to explore primary teacher experiences with kinesthetics and tactile activities in virtual settings. The combined conceptual framework of the study were Dewey’s theories on active learning and Siemens’ theory on the changing curriculum and learning in virtual settings. Eight primary teachers …

First-Year Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Mentor Program In A Southeastern School District, Taylor L. Castaldo Jan 2023

First-Year Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Mentor Program In A Southeastern School District, Taylor L. Castaldo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many educators are leaving their teaching positions, especially in the early years of their career. This has led many states and districts to mandate teacher mentor programs for new teachers with the hope of retaining these teachers. However, even with these mentor programs, new teachers are continuing to leave their positions, which affects the district, the school, its employees, and the students. A lack of knowledge about teachers’ experiences as mentees in mentoring programs limits a state’s ability to improve programs. This study was conducted to address this gap in knowledge. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore …

Financial Aid As A Predictor For Retention Of First-Year Black Male Community College Students, Malcom Jamar Morgan-Petty

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractBlack male students are retained in higher education at less than half the rate of their Hispanic and White counterparts. At Southwestern Community College (SWCC, a pseudonym), there were indicators that the amount of financial aid received was related to retention; however, the extent of the relationship was unknown. The purpose of this nonexperimental quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between the amount of financial aid received and the retention of first-to-second-year Black male students at SWCC. Bean and Metzner’s model of nontraditional undergraduate student attrition provided the theoretical foundation. The research question sought to clarify the extent …
