What Are We Teaching Abroad? Faculty Goals For Short-Term Study Abroad Courses, Elizabeth Niehaus, Ashley Wegener

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

Based on survey data from over 400 faculty members who taught short-term study abroad courses, the purpose of this study was to identify the types of goals that faculty members have in teaching short-term study abroad courses and the relationship between faculty background characteristics (i.e., race, gender, discipline, and prior experience) and their teaching goals. By further understanding the goals that these faculty members have for their study abroad programs, we are better able to assess how these programs may or may not be meeting overall internationalization goals and then to use this information to assist faculty members and higher …

Spotlighting Stigma And Barriers: Examining Secondary Students’ Attitudes Toward School Counseling Services, Richard Auger, Nick R. Abel, Brandie M. Oliver Nov 2018

Spotlighting Stigma And Barriers: Examining Secondary Students’ Attitudes Toward School Counseling Services, Richard Auger, Nick R. Abel, Brandie M. Oliver

Scholarship and Professional Work – Education

Student attitudes toward accessing school counseling services were the focus of a survey of 3,584 middle school and high school students. Respondents identified barriers to seeking help from school counselors, including stigma, a desire to manage problems themselves, a lack of a positive relationship with their school counselor, and a concern that the counselor would not keep disclosures confidential. This study also examined the impact of gender, age, and race/ethnicity on students’ willingness to seek help from their school counselor. We present implications for practice and future research.

Positionality And Power In Par: Exploring The Competing Motivations Of Par Stakeholders With Latinx Middle School Students In Northern California, Jennifer Lucko Nov 2018

Positionality And Power In Par: Exploring The Competing Motivations Of Par Stakeholders With Latinx Middle School Students In Northern California, Jennifer Lucko

Education | Faculty Conference Presentations

In this paper, I provide a case example exploring the complex relationships negotiated by a university researcher when PAR is conducted in a public school setting in order to better theorize how the positionality of PAR stakeholders effects classroom-based Participatory Action Research. I argue that despite a shared commitment to social justice and educational equity, the different positionalities of the university researcher and classroom teacher not only shaped each stakeholder’s relationship to Participatory Action Research, but also led to competing academic motivations in the classroom that undergirded the ultimate shortcomings of the project.

Teacher Vs. Tutor, Brady Maynes Nov 2018

Teacher Vs. Tutor, Brady Maynes

Writing Center Analysis Papers

The goal of this paper is to explore the differences between the roles of a tutor in the writing center and a teacher grading their student’s papers. I discuss ways in which tutor and teacher are similar as they both evaluate student’s papers but the end goal is significantly different. A tutor does not nor should they assign a grade to any paper they read in a tutoring session. One of a teacher’s primary intentions is to assign a grade to their student’s papers that reflects the feedback given. There is also a barrier, whether purposely constructed or placed by …

Writing Center Analysis Papers

In both composition courses and writing center tutorage, concepts like organization and structure are frequently stressed. Despite this emphasis, students continue to have difficulty in understanding what organization entails. In this piece, I use the Sanskrit language and my experiences as both a teacher and writing center peer tutor, in order to argue that learning to draw connections in writing equips students to transform their papers from distinct sections and evidences to a radically-new whole.I propose several methods that instructors and tutors can implement to equip students with connection-making skills.
